dare to do sth.敢做某事;offer to do sth.主动、乐意做某事;hesitate to do sth.犹豫做某事;happen to do sth.
故选A项。

Jobs and work do much more than most of us realize to provide happiness and contentment. We"re all used to thinking that work provides the material things of life—the goods and services that make our modern civilization possible. But we are much less conscious of the degree to which work provides the more important psychological wellbeing that can make the difference between a full and an empty life.
Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin (罪恶)and punishment. And in our own day we are used to bearing traditional complaints.Against this background,it may well come as a surprise to learn that not only psychologists but other behavioral scientists have come to accept the positive contribution of work to the individual"s happiness and sense of personal achievement.Work is more than a necessity for most human beings;it is the focus of their lives, the source of their identity and creativity.
Rather than a punishment of a burden, work is the opportunity to realize one"s potential. And the opposite is true, too. For large numbers of people, the absence of work is harmful to their health.Retirement often brings many problems surrounding the “What do I do with myself?”question, even though there may be no financial cares.Large numbers of people regularly get headaches and other illnesses on weekends when they don"t have their jobs to go to,and must take care of themselves. It has been observed that unemployment, quite apart from financial pressures, brings enormous psychological troubles and that many individuals"conditions become worse rapidly when jobless.
But why?Why should work be such a significant source of human satisfaction?A good share of the answer rests in the kind of pride that is stimulated by the job,by the activity of accomplishing.

When I was young I wanted to be a model,so when a national contest was staged,I convinced my parents to take me for an audition (试演).I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious (有声望的) modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13,my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgement and I begged my parents to let me go.We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be real model.I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course,I wasn"t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5′9″(about 1.75 metres) I could be a success.I prayed for a growth spurt (冲刺) because I could not imagine giving up my dream.I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes.$500 for a photo shoot, and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of my begging.

When you are little, it’s not hard to believe you can change the world. I remember my enthusiasm when, at the age of 12, I addressed delegates at the Rio Earth Summit. “I am only a child,” I told them .“Yet I know that if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environment answers, what a wonderful place this would be. In school you teach us not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share, not to be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the thing you tell us not to do ? You grown-ups say you love us, but I challenge you, please, to make your actions reflect your words.”
I spoke for six minutes and received a standing ovation. Some of the delegates even cried. I thought that maybe I had reached some of them, that my speech might actually spur(激励) action. Now, a decade from Rio, after I’ve sat through many more conferences, I’m not sure what has been accomplished. My confidence in the people in power and in the power of an individual’s voice to reach them has been deeply shaken.
When I was little, the world was simple. But as a young adult, I’m learning that as we have to make choices — education, career, lifestyle — life gets more and more complicated. We are beginning to feel pressure to produce and be successful. We are taught that economic growth is in progress, but aren’t taught how to pursue a happy, healthy or sustainable(可持续的) way of living. And we are learning that what we wanted for the future when we were 12 was ideal and innocent.
Today I’m no longer a child, but I’m worried about what kind of environment my children will grow up in. I know change is possible, because I am changing, still figuring out what I think. I am still deciding how to live my life. The challenges are great, but if we accept individual responsibility and make sustainable choices, we will rise to the challenges, and we will become part of the positive tide of change.
小题1:The purpose of what the writer said at the age of 12 was to _____.
A.end poverty and make school beautiful

小题2:What does the underlined word “ovation” in the second paragraph refer to _____.
A.a long period of laughing
B.a warm welcome
C.an expression used for greeting
D.a long period of clapping and applause

A.in his teens
B.in his twenties
C.in his thirties
D.in his forties
小题4:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.the writer thinks what he thought at the age of 12 is mature.
B.the writer’s children will certainly live in an ideal environment.
C.the writer’s confidence in the people in power has deeply shaken their voice.
D.the writer’s belief does not change when he grows up.

Now you’re a fool for helping. “I don’t want to get involved” seems to have become a national motto. One summer I was driving from my hometown of Tahoe City, California to New Orleans, Louisiana. In the middle of the desert, I passed a young man standing by the roadside. He had his    out and held a gas can in his other hand. I drove right by him. There was a time    you’d be called a jerk (混蛋) for passing by somebody     .
Several days later I was still    about the hitchhiker (搭便车的人), about how I didn’t even lift my foot    the accelerator (加速踏板) for him. “Does anyone stop any more?” I wondered. I recalled Blanche DuBois’s famous line—”I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” Was that    these days? One way to test this would be for a person to journey    the US without any money, just    on the good will of others. What would happen? Would he find food, shelter and support?
The idea intrigued (激起兴趣) me.
The week I    37, I realized that I had never done something truly crazy.    I decided to really do it: travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic without a penny. I would only accept    of rides, food and places to sleep. For six weeks I hitched 82 rides and covered 4,223 miles across 14 states. I was treated kindly    I went. I was    by people’s readiness to help a stranger.
In Oregon, a house painter named Mike    the cold weather and asked if I had a coat. I didn’t, so he gave me a big green army-style jacket. A lumber-mill worker in Michigan named Tim invited me to a    dinner with his family in their shabby house. Then he offered me a tent. I refused, but Tim insisted, packing it into my bag himself. I found people were generally compassionate. Hearing I had no money and would take none, people bought me food or    with them whatever they happened to have. Those who had the    to give often gave the most.
I’m    to all the people I met for their rides, their food, their shelter and their gifts. My faith in ordinary folks was    . I was proud to live in a country where people were still willing to help. In spite of everything, you can still depend on the    of strangers.
