97% of the world"s water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs
careful management, especially in agriculture.
Although the idea of a water shortage seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall
country, many of the world"s agricultural industries experience constant water shortages. Although dams
can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution
(重新分配) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental
cost to be considered. Where valleys are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed.
Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world
to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming
requirements.
This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation. In
Texas, farmers" overuse of irrigation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central
Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys,
but much of the water use has been poorly managed.
Saudi Arabia"s attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of
irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only
decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.
B. people in high rainfall countries feel lucky
C. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world
D. the costs of water redistribution should be considered .
B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.
C. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.
D. Good management of water use resulted from the project in the Central Valley.
B. water redistribution and wildlife protection

little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed.
Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster
and each new computer boasts (吹嘘) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks.
All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an
airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they
have been left behind in another time zone. Again, spending too long at computer results in painful wrists
and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists; too much use may
transmit
harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about.
However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so
accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing, or even just one thing at a time.
Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take
us into another world.
There was a time when some people"s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care
of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is
much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks
our ancestors faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from
wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.
B. time is limited
C. the prices are increasingly high
D. our love of speed seems never-ending
B. Imaginary life.
C. Times of inventions.
D. Time for constant activity.
B. Optimistic.
C. Objective.
D. Negative.
B. Modern technology and its influence.
C. Imaginations and inventions.
D. Machinery and human beings.
used steam engine. He had no way of telling people exactly how powerful it was, for at that time there were
no units for measuring power.
Watt decided to find out how much work one strong horse could do in one minute. He called that init one
horsepower. With this unit he could measure the work his steam engine could do.
He discovered that a horse could lift a 3,300-pound weight 10 feet into the air in one minute. His engine
could lift a 3,300 pound weight 100 feet in one minute.
Because his engine did ten times as much work as the horse, Watt called it a ten-horsepower engine.
B. engine
C. steam engine
D. bus
B. to show how useful his steam engine was
C. to tell people exactly how powerful his steam engine was
D. to measure the weight of his steam engine
B. what one strong horse can do in one minute
C. what one horse can do in a day
D. what work one horse can do as much as possible
B. Watt decided to make the world"s first widely used horse engine.

reasons for this great interest in the ideas, feelings, and actions of youth.
Today there are about seven million Americans in colleges and universities. Young persons under twenty-
five make up nearly half of the American population. Many of these will soon be in charge of the nation.
Naturally their ideas are important to everyone in the country, and it is necessary for older people to understand
what they think and feel.
College students today have strong opinions about right and wrong. They are deeply interested in making a
better life for all people, especially for those who have not been given a fair chance before now. They see much
that is wrong in the lives of their parents. It is hard for them to see what is right and good in the older ways. As
a result, there is often trouble in American families. Your country may be meeting such problems, too.

Food banks are the organizations to help these poor people. Food banks receive the food from companies or supermarkets, and also from donations from the public. In this way, they collect extra food and give out the food to people who are hungry.
The first food bank was St. Mary"s Food Bank. It started in 1967 in Arizona. In 1979, it became a larger organization named America"s Second Harvest Network-made up of over 200 food banks across the USA. Each year, the Network provides food for more than 25 million hungry people in the United States, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million old people.
Volunteers are important to food banks. There are many different ways for you to volunteer. You can help out through activities such as:
*Sorting, boxing and packaging donated food.
*Tutoring poor kids at your local Kids Café.
*Transporting or delivering food.
It"s simple. Take part in it today, and let"s try to make our world without hunger!

A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school,
the more money you"ll earn later.
The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on one"s earning potential shouldn"t come as too much
of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily
as powerful as talent and hard work.
"If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds
of different situations," said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with
the recent finding. "Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but
lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed," said Xu.She believed that all this helps you "earn a
higher salary".
Maybe that"s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症).
A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook"s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her
large reserve of social contacts.
But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?
"Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom
I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition (定义) of "friend"," said Meghan
Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.
B. the more friends you have in school, the more money you"ll earn in your late life.
C. the less friends you have, the poor lives you will live.
D. friends can make more money for you.
B. You will not feel lonely.
C. You are quite content with your life.
D. You have the ability to get along with others in various situations.
B. Friends play a more important part in our daily life than anything else.
C. Friends are currency.
D. Friends give you success.
B. Graduating from college means that you can make a fortune in the future.
C. Friends mean a form of currency.
D. Friends can make you wider social circle and make you feel better when you feel depressed.
