My husband, Pat, and I went to sleep 37 . 38 after midnight, Jack quietly touched me. “Mommy, I want to stay with you. I promise I won’t take much room.” I shifted 39 to make room. My son soon fell asleep. An hour later, Tara cried and I carefully went downstairs. “Mommy, my 40 is all stuffed up(堵住). I can’t really breathe very well. Will you please 41 with me a little while?” Tara doesn’t often get up at night, 42 I decided to be there for her. She soon fell asleep. I returned to my own bed. I was determined to sleep. But to my 43 , I found Jack sleeping on my side of the bed. He looked so 44 that I couldn’t remove him. Quietly and carefully, I lay down between 45 and Jack. I did manage to get some sleep 46 I heard Tara’s voice again. I returned to 47 Tara. “Mom, please lie down with me a little bit, I had a bad dream, and I’m so 48 .” “Of course, honey. It was only a dream. Mommy’s here and 49 is okay.” We fell asleep 50 each other’s arms. Even in my sleepy state, I thought of 51 these nights of merry-go-round(一连串的繁忙活动)beds will be over. In their place, my twins will be grown. 52 before I’m ready, our children’ rooms will be much too 53 and empty. So it is especially on days when I’m worn out after a night on this mom’s merry-go-round that I remind 54 that these very days and nights are, in fact. “the good old days”, ever so 55 .

Every word that came from her mouth was a(n) 37 ! She wasn’t happy with the number of checkouts 38 ; she wasn’t happy with the amount of shopping some people had in their baskets; she wasn’t happy because this supermarket didn’t have a stand where she 39 scan her own shopping. I listened to her 40 looking around as I loaded my stuff onto the conveyor belt (传送带).I didn’t want 41 to do with that kind of attitude, and if ever I’d felt like letting someone go 42 of me, it wouldn’t be such a woman! But then I 43 back.Standing beside the woman was a five-year-old girl, 44 her granddaughter. The girl’s part of the shopping 45 of some comic books. I couldn’t 46 it.I pushed my shopping back to the end of the conveyor belt, 47 a space.“After you,” I said to the woman and the girl, and 48 them to a big 49 .The woman was delighted, and even 50 to complain ---- until she was walking away. We can all complain; we can all react 54 , but it doesn’t have to be like that. And, even if only for a few 55 , I wanted to leave that little soul with just a glimpse of another way.

My mother was a household servant. Through her work, she observed that successful people spent a lot more time reading than they did watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only watch two to three pre-selected TV programs during the week. With our free time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and write book reports. She would mark them up with check marks. Years later we realized her marks were a ruse. My mother had only received a third-grade education. Although we had no money, between the covers of those books, I could go anywhere, do anything and be anybody. When I entered high school, I was an A-student, but not for long. I wanted the fancy clothes. I wanted to hang out with the guys. I went form being an A- student to a B- student to a C-student, but I didn’t care. One night my mother came home and I complained about not having enough shirts. She said, “Okay, I’ll give you all the money I make this week cleaning floors and bathrooms, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With everything left over, you can have all the shirts you want.” I was very pleased with that arrangement but once I got through allocating(分配) money, there was nothing left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep a roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, much less buy clothes. I also realized that immediate satisfaction wasn’t going to get me anywhere. Success required intellectual(理智的) preparation. I went back to my studies and became an A-student again. I dreamed of becoming a doctor when I was just a kid. And now I have achieved my dream. Over the years my mother’s changeless faith in God has inspired me, particularly when I found myself faced with my own medical illness. A few years ago I discovered I had a very serious cancer; I was told it might have spread to my spine(脊柱). My mother believed in God very much. She never worried. She said that God would never throw me away forever; there was no way that this was going to be a major problem. The abnormality in spine turned out to be not bad; I was able to have surgery and am cured. My story is really my mother’s story -a woman little formal education or worldly goods who used her position as a parent to change the lives of her children. 小题1: The underlined word “ruse” in the first paragraph probably means .A.discovery | B.success | C.trick | D.pleasure | 小题2:When the author asked his mother to buy him shirts, she .A.advised him to earn money by himself | B.asked him to try to manage their money | C.persuaded him not to buy them patiently | D.agreed to buy them for him immediately | 小题3: What do we learn about the author?A.He now works as a doctor. | B.He disliked watching TV as a kid. | C.He received little formal education. | D.He often did housework when young. | 小题4:The underlined word “this” in the last but one paragraph refers to .A.God’s throwing me away | B.my own medical illness | C.the operation on my spine | D.my mother’s changeless faith in God | 小题5:In writing the passage, the author mainly shows us .A.the happy relationships in his family | B.the benefits of reading for young children | C.the importance of formal education for adults | D.his mother’s great influence on his development |
