killing wildlife and getting dumped in landfills where they take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Researchers
have been unsuccessfully looking for a solution.
The 16-year-old Canadian high school student, Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has
discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade (降解) in as few as 3 months. a finding that won him first
prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, a $ 10,000 prize, a $ 20,000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize
a major environmental issue.
Burd"s strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by microorganisms (微
生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them to work eating the plastic much faster
than under normal conditions.
With this goal in mind, he grounded plastic bags into a powder and concocted (调制) a solution of
household chemicals, yeast (酵母) and tap water to encourage microbes growth. Then he added the plastic
powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months. Finally, he tested the resulting bacterial culture
on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control. Sure enough, the plastic exposed
(暴露) to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks.
The inputs are cheap, maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes produce
heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.
"Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic bags
falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are doing with these
plastic bags. The answer: not much. So I decided to do something myself." said Daniel Burd.
B. he contributed much to environmental protection
C. he found a way to degrade plastics in shorter time
D. he could encourage microbes growth in an easier way
B. test how effective his method was
C. know which bacteria worked faster
D. control the temperature in the process

found in the African rain forest suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it"s hard not to wonder
of the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. "Most of the infections (感染)
we think of as human infections started in other animals" says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public
Health Preparedness at Columbia University.
It"s not just that we"re going to where the animals are; we"re also bringing them closer to us Popular foreign
pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen"s pets and she now thinks
that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. "I don"t think it"s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited
knowledge of them" says Isaksen.
"Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing"
says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call Researchers believe infected animals may infect their
owners. We know very little about these new diseases. Anew bug (病毒) may be kind at first But it may develop
into something harmful (有害的). Monkey-pox doesn"t look a major infectious disease. But is not impossible to
pass the disease from person to person.
B. prevent us from being infected
C. enjoy being with children
D. suffer from monkey-pox
B. We need to study native animals
C. They can"t live out of the rain forest
D. We do not know much about them yet
B. a clear warning
C. a dangerous animal
D. a morning call
B. may easily get infected by diseases from dogs
C. should not be allowed to have pets
D. should stop buying pests from Africa
night"s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐), and they have a ton of different excuses for
doing it. Some say they don"t have time. others think they"re "saving" calories (卡路里), still others just
don"t like breakfast food.
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you"re trying to lose weight.
"Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all," says Katherine
Brooking, R.D, who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year"s "SELF CHALLENGE". And even
pizza can be healthy if it"s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research
shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of
Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who
regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast
altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night"s leftovers-it may sound
crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, "You can always eat it tomorrow," I put away
the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories.
And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
B. things left undone
C. meals made of vegetables
D. pizza topped with fruit
B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.
B. be careful about what you eat
C. heat up food before eating it
D. eat calorie-controlled food
B. who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late
D. who eat before sleep
remember our parents" telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth
in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test
of time.
Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now
report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one
carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic (蒜) is good for you, too. It
can kill the type of virus that causes colds.
Unfortunately, not all of Mom"s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of
children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is
no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains
tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.
Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold water, there is still a lot of
truth in the old wives" tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated (积累) from thousands
of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search
for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.
B. Sticky sweets are damaging to our teeth.
C. Swimming after a meal is dangerous.
D. Carrots prevent people from catching colds.
B. by order in space
C. by order in time
D. by examples
B. to be valuable
C. to be admirable
D. to be suitable
B. Objective
C. Dissatisfied
D. Curious
Probably the best example is the rush to produce ethanol (乙醇) for fuel from corn. Corn is a renewable
resource-you can harvest it and grow more, almost limitlessly. So replacing gas with corn ethanol seems like
a great idea.
One might get a bit more energy out of the ethanol than that used to make it, which could still make ethanol
more sustainable than gas generally, but that"s not the end of the problem. Using corn to make ethanol means
less corn is left to feed animals and people, which drives up the cost of food. That result leads to turning the
fallow land -including, in some cases, rain forest in places such as Brazil-into farmland, which in turn gives
off lots of carbon dioxide (CO) into the air. Finally, over many years, the energy benefit from burning ethanol
would make up for the forest loss. But by then, climate change would have progressed so far that it might not
help.
You cannot really declare any practice "sustainable" until you have done a complete life-cycle analysis of its
environmental (环境的) costs. Even then, technology and public keep developing, and that development can
lead to unforeseen and undesired results. The admirable goal of living sustainably requires plenty of thought on
an ongoing basis.
B. The increasing carbon dioxide in the air
C. The greater need for farmland
D. The big change in weather.
B. the forest loss
C. climate change
D. burning ethanol
B. acceptable
C. admirable
D. useless
B. Sustainability
C. Ethanol energy
D. Environmental protection
My latest victim is an energetic student. After school, he played football hard for two hours. Though 5 , he still went to the cinema. Then he got back home and took a cold shower immediately.
I seized this golden chance to 6 him. He reacted, trying to 7 me, but I was already 8 deep in his throat. He kept sneezing (打喷嚏) and his nose was running. 9 he put on some warm clothes, it didn"t work, for there were too many of us. Besides, his sore throat kept 10 him, and he developed a cough to force me and my family out, but 11 .
The next day he couldn"t go to 12 . He had lost his appetite and was not as 13 as before. His mother made him orange juice every few hours for more vitamin C, which would help his 14 .
For two days he was 15 by his mother. As he rested more, his defense strengthened and I began to feel the 16 , I knew I had to 17 him before long. But I am not the one who gives up easily, and I made every effort to fight back. 18 , it was my turn to feel 19 now, for his defense system was starting an all-out attack against me. I became 20 and finally my time was over.
Do you know what I am?
