save the endangered species (物种). That"s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have
been undertaking for the past five years in a project called "Noah"s Ark".
Noah"s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing
them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A &
M"s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the
species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100
years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into
the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
"The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs
could be a major problem," Kraemer believes. "They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result
in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it"s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science
if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort," adds Kraemer, who
is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
"They are trying to do something that"s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah"s Ark.
We"re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there"s a lot we can
learn from what they are attempting to do. It"s a research that is very much needed."

entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful? Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However,
most zoos remain "collection" of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats (栖息地).
Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having leamed
anything meaningful about the animals" natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small
spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species" name, diet, and natural range.
The animals" normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don"t usually take care of the animals" natural
needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and
physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A world-wide study
of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed
that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears
spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big
cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot
about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species (物种) dying
out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven"t we seen enough competitions to name
baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people
kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals" natural habitats.
B. Unhappy.
C. Natural.
D. Simple.
B. behave strangely
C. often attack other animals
D. enjoy walking around
B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
B. giving examples of animals in the wild
C. questioning the way animals live
D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats
B. most animals in zoos are endangered species
C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos
D. it"s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的词数的要求).
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, simply because they are in the way.(天生就该如此) Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are
on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United State alone are considered to be in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, __________________
_____________________________________________. Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a
source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create
many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (老鹰), the farmers" stores of corn
and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep
down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied (繁殖) quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know
about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws to protect animals in danger.
Quite a few counties have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger
list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The sidewalks are stained with
chewing gum that has been spat out and the gutters (排水沟) are full of thrown away fast food cartons. Years
ago I remember traveling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags, waste bottles at the edge of every
road. Nowadays, Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong?
The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot longer than before. If it is
not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the bushes for years; a semi-permanent reminder of what
a dirty little country we have now. Firstly, it is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there is no solution to this. A
few years ago, the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months
reduced their use by 90%. When he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar
arrangement in Britain. The plastics industry was against that, of course. However, they need not have
bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.
What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individual and collective, before
it is too late. The alternative is to continue going downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish
tip (废物场 ). We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment. If
things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are surrounded by dirt, they
behave dirtily. Now, much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?
B. you can see Britain at its dirtiest.
C. you can see how dirty Britain is now.
D. the grass has thickened on the roadside.
B. rubbish lasts longer than it used to
C. our society is increasingly mobile
D. people in Britain are dirty
B. He failed in his attempt to introduce a tax on plastic bags.
C. His attempt to follow the Irish example with a tax on plastic bags was welcomed.
D. He had problems with the plastics industry who weren"t bothered about the tax.
B. There is more than one solution to the problem.
C. Britain will become an extremely dirty country in five years.
D. People tend to behave according to what they see around them
Throw out the bottles and boxes of drugs in your house. A new theory suggests that medicine could
be bad for your health. This new theory argues that healing(the process of becoming healthy and strong
again)is at our fingertips: we can be healthy by doing Reiki on a regular basis.
Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and
scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Reiki, Yoga, Tai Chi.
These waste our time, something that is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that can
kill our pain and x-rays that show us our broken bones. We must admit that these methods are very
effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some "everyday complaints” such as
back pains, headaches, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take
an Aspirin; when you cannot sleep, you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When
you use these pills for a long period, you become dependent on them; you cannot sleep without them.
We pay huge amounts of money and but never get better. How about a safer and more economical way
of healing? When doing Reiki to yourself, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very
economical. Also, there are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.
They also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs.
They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How
can Reiki make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the
hospital losing their hair and weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take. Actually,
instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overcome
the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the
everyday worries.
Some people may still hold that in our material world, everything depends on time. How would it be
possible to find time to do Reiki? In fact, Reiki does not require more than 15 minutes of our time. It is
less time consuming than medicine if we think of all the time we spend taking medicine for some
complaints and taking some more for the side effects as well.
B. serious
C. positive
D. doubtful
B. Reiki is an effective treatment but not scientifically explained.
C. Reiki can make people less dependent on drugs.
D. Reiki is a kind of cheap drug but works well.
B. Three.
C. Five.
D. Seven.
B. Health and Healing at Your Fingers
C. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Reiki
D. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Medicine
mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle
often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that
over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so
much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third
of a typical household"s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged
twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running
out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases
which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The
solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many
supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming
round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for
example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging
with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially
true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more
packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much
unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we
have a mountain to climb.
B. Recycling too many wastes.
C. Making more products than necessary.
D. Having more material than is needed.
B. the increase of packaging recycling
C. the rapid growth of super markets
D. the fact of packaging overuse
B. means burning packaging for energy
C. is the solution to gas shortage
D. leads to a waste of land
B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D. Other products are better packaged than food.
B. Needless material is mostly recycled.
C. People like collecting recyclable waste.
D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.
