阅读理解.     Psychology(心理学)tells us that many people hate to take risks. But it is good for us
to take risks, especially (尤其)when the risk is to achieve a desired result. In that way, we
become stronger and braver.
Our human nature should be to take risks, but some people just sit and wish they didn"t
have the fear(恐惧)to move on. This is because of one or two failures in their lives. Please
step out and don"t let the past hold you back from living life to the fullest. Move forward
and move on!
In studying the psychology of taking risks, we find that human nature provides(提供)
us with the desire (渴望)to experiment and take chances.
Risk taking is a great benefit(好处)that allowed our ancestors(祖先) to become
stronger and stronger day by day. By taking risks they fought off enemies and discovered
new territories(领土). This attitude has become a part of our modern culture. Riding a
roller coaster is a common risk taking activity that even the average person seems to enjoy
although they have the understanding that it is dangerous. This psychological and
biological (生物学上的) connection (联系)creates an interesting connection between
what is unsafe and what humans enjoy.
Getting in a car each day is a risk. Getting out of bed is a risk. There is such thing as
perfect safety. We need to take risks so that we can complete (finish) many things.
Astronauts take risks when they get inside a rocket; however, the things they achieve are
great. Businessmen take a risk when they buy parts of a company. However, without
doing that, they could not make more money.
We need to take risks so that we can gain something. It is impossible to move forward
in life, earn money, enjoy a relationship, play a sport, or do anything else without taking a
risk. It is all part of the game. It"s one of the most important parts of life.1.Some people don"t want to take risks, mainly (主要)because ___________.A. they are too lazy to move on
B. they feel pleased with the present life.
C. they have experienced some failures before
D. they show little interest in the strange world outside2. What does the underlined part "This attitude" in Paragraph 4 mean?______.A. Taking risks
B. Fighting off enemies
C. Discovering new territories
D. Becoming stronger and stronger3. What can we infer from the passage?______.A. Daily life is full of risks
B. The safest place has the greatest risk
C. People should take risks when they are young
D. We can always achieve our goals by taking risks4. What would be the title for the passage?_______.A. Taking risks is easier said than done
B. On risks taken by ancestors
C. Live our life to the fullest(充分地)
D. No risk, no gain.

阅读理解。     After crying a river of tears, having too much drink the night before,or spending little time for
sleep, you may find yourself with red swollen eyes. Although you can cover your eye bags with
a cool pair of sunglasses, you still have to deal with your eye problem when you have to remove
them. What"s more, bags under the eyes are usually accompanied by other problems such as dark
circles or extreme redness.
Swollen eyes usually last for hours or a couple of days. If you are not going anywhere,it is
actually good for you to just let nature determine when your swollen eyes are coming back to
normal. However,if you have an important meeting,a date,or you are going to attend a special
occasion, having eye bag can really be annoying. Here are some tricks on how you can recover
your eyes from being swollen.
Some people have more chance to have eye bags, while others don"t. If you are one of the
individuals who often have swollen eyes, then you should stay away from things that are causing
your eyes to swell.
If you have an important date, you should remember to sleep well the night before. Also, make
sure that you are not wild with alcohol, which may be responsible for the phenomenon. Getting
easy with salty foods may also be a good idea because like alcohol, too much salt can also make
you keep much water.
If you were not able to prevent your eyes from becoming swollen, then do not be depressed.
here are plenty of things you can do,such as performing eye massage to help reduce the possibility.
Using your ring finger, simply massage your eye area in circular motion, starting from your nasal
sinuses(鼻窦)then to the cheeks. Make sure that you slightly push the skin upwards so as not to
cause wrinkles. Repeat the massage for about five times on each eye. Gently massaging the area
will help get rid of pooled water faster.
Placing a cool eye mask (choose the one without holes for more coverage)on your eyes for
10 to 15 minutes will help comfort your eyes. Moreover, your blood vessels (血管)will shrink or
tighten due to the cold temperature. This will help remove water beneath the skin under your eyes.
If you do not have a plastic eye mask, you can use pieces of cold melon or used teabags.
If you have swollen eyes,it would be best for you to drink plenty of cold water or other cold
drink. As mentioned earlier, the cool temperature encourages blood vessels to shrink, which will
help in promoting better water loss. Basically, the bags under your eyes are simply water or fluid
that was not properly removed out of your system.
If you still have eye bags even after you performed the tricks above, then you need to skip
eyeliner for the day. This makeup is used to emphasize the shape of the eyes so if you have swollen
eyes, the eyeliner will only highlight the shortcoming.

阅读理解。     A $415 million study, by far the most expensive one, ever to ask whether a lowfat diet reduces
the risk of getting cancer or heart disease has found that the diet has no effect.
The study involved nearly 49,000 women aged 50 to 79 who were followed for eight years. In
the end, those assigned to a lowfat diet had the same rates of breast cancer, colon cancer and heart
attacks as those who ate whatever they pleased, researchers are reporting today.
And the lowfat diet was not easy to follow. Women were told to aim for a diet that had just 20
percent of its calories as fat, which meant, for example, no butter on bread, no cheese on bagels,
no oil in salad dressings. And most fail to meet that requirement.
The result, the study investigators agreed, does not justify recommending lowfat diets to the
public to reduce their heart disease and cancer risk. Given the lack of benefit found in the study,
many medical researchers said that the best dietary advice, for now, was to follow federal guidelines
for healthy eating, with less saturated and trans fats, more grains, and more fruits and vegetables.
But not everyone was convinced. Some, like Dr. Dean Ornish, a longtime promoter of lowfat
diets, said that the women did not reduce their fat to low enough levels or eat enough fruits and
vegetables, and that the study, even at eight years, did not give the diets enough time. Others said
that the study did not mean people should abandon lowfat diets. The diet could still make a difference,
at least with heart disease, if people were to eat the socalled Mediterranean_diet,_low in saturated
fats like butter and high in oils like olive oil. But the women in the study reduced all kinds of fat.
To this, Barbara V. Howard, a principle investigator in the study argued that "What we are saying
is that a modest reduction of fat did not do anything for heart disease and so on, but it doesn"t say that
this diet is not beneficial". And she said people should realise that diet alone was not enough to stay
healthy. Except for not smoking, the advice for a healthy lifestyle is based largely on indirect evidence,
like eating well, controlling weight and getting regular exercise.1.The underlined phrase "Mediterranean diet" in Paragraph 5 probably means________.A.diet eaten in the Mediterranean region
B.diet that comes from the Mediterranean region
C.diet low in saturated fats and high in olive oil
D.diet found in Mediterranean restaurants2.After the study result was released, we can expect all of the following EXCEPT that ________.A.researchers still have ground to advise people to have a lowfat diet
B.no institute will issue some advice on lowfat diets
C.many people still believe lowfat diets are beneficial for people"s health
D. people will probably turn to federal guidelines for healthy eating advice3.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.diets have nothing to do with disease prevention
B.a healthy lifestyle often means balanced diets, enough exercise and quitting smoking
C.all fats should be removed from people"s diet to keep one healthy
D.if one gets only 20% of his calories from fat, he is sure to keep healthy

阅读理解     There are several advantages in planting trees: they firm the soil, soak(渗透) up extra water and take
carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. However, it now turns out that planting trees could add to global
warming. We all know that tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firmly on the ground and out of the
wind"s power. The problem is that some of the dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon
dioxide.
Huge dust storms blow out over the oceans from dry parts of North Africa and Central Asia. Tons of
dust are lifted and left as a thin film over the ocean surface.
Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a tree planting programme there is
successful and the dust supply reduced, the net result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked away
in the ocean.
Andy, an environmental scientist has spent the past few years studying dust and says his work shows
clearly the complexity of the system. For this reason the need is to focus on cutting carbon dioxide giving
off rather than doing anything else.
Robert, an American scientist, has shown that when native grassland areas are invaded by trees,
carbon is lost from the soil. "We are studying why the soil carbon disappears, but one theory is that trees
do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grass, so less carbon goes directly into the soil
from trees." said Robert.
In wet areas of the world, the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to be
outweighed by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground.
Countries that plan to fight against global warming by planting trees may have to think again. Solutions
to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear, and understanding the Earth"s
climate is a very great challenge.1. People usually hold the opinion that________.A. huge dust storms can destroy carbon dioxide
B. planting trees could reduce global warming
C. huge dust storms can destroy the oceans on the Earth
D. planting trees is the only way to control huge dust storms2. Andy, an environmental scientist, believes that________.A. environmental problems are more complex than expected
B. trees shouldn"t have been planted in dry places
C. dust plays a more important part than trees
D. carbon dioxide is harmful to everything3. Robert"s experiment proves that________.A. trees absorb more carbon than grass
B. carbon can turn grass into dust
C. less carbon can make trees grow faster
D. grassland areas should be covered by forests4. The best title for this passage is "________". A. The importance of planting trees
B. The dust clouds soak up carbon dioxide
C. Is it really useful to plant trees to reduce global warming?
D. Why the soil carbon disappears

阅读理解     What would you think if I told you I could eat 40 percent more food than other people-eating boxes
of ice cream, bowls of noodles and plates of meat-all while losing weight?
You might hate me, thinking I have one of those annoyingly good metabolisms(新陈代谢)that just
burn up fat the instant it enters my body. You might wonder if I have an intestinal(肠的)worm, or
perhaps an eating disorder. Or maybe you"d just shrug your shoulders and figure I have a rich fantasy
life.
     You"d be wrong.
For my body to finish such a surprising task, I would have to be a mouse. Not just any mouse, but
one lucky enough to be involved in a new study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
After identifying an enzyme(酶)that allows fat to be stored in the body, scientists fed mice without
those enzymes, and found those mice were able to consume far more food than other mice-and still
weigh 10 to 15 percent less.
Best of all, the mice that had no enzymes were in very good health, producing baby mice with no
problem and generally acting like any other mouse. That"s great news for obesity researchers, who think
that scientists may figure out a way to prevent the fat metabolizing(脂肪代谢)enzyme in humans and
control weight gain. And such a pill would be very exciting for many people who are struggling to get rid
of dangerous extra pounds.
But don"t start planning any big dinner just yet. At this point, of course, any pill for humans is but a
twinkle(闪烁) in the eye of every medicine company"s CEO. More tests are to be made, and eventually
humans will be introduced in the test.
But for now, unfortunately, control in diet is still the key.1. What does "such a surprising task" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Eating a lot of food while losing weight.
B. Burning up fat very quickly.
C. Controlling the diet.
D. Having a rich fantasy life.2. Why did the author say he/she had to be a mouse in Paragraph 4?A. Because a mouse can lose weight no matter how much it eats.
B. Because the weight losing tests were made on the mouse.
C. Because the mouse has a very good metabolism.
D. Because the author wants to try the food without the enzyme.3. In the experiment, the mice without those enzymes________.A. were in good condition
B. put on weight
C. became weak
D. could not have baby mice4. What does the author want to show through the last two paragraphs? A. You can be free of guilt when having big dinners.
B. Scientists cannot find the key to identifying the enzyme.
C. Don"t overeat before the test is made on humans.
D. It is unnecessary to control weight at present.
