asked me for jeans from Canada when I visited.
Upon seeing them, he claimed they were not Levis. "What does Levis mean?" I asked naively.
Later, I was preparing to come to China when my Sichuan friend ordered jeans for her daughter.
"You mean Levis, I guess?" "No, Benetton," she said.
Living in China I realize the effect brands have on people here. Once I bought a pair of sandals
because I needed sandals. Many people told me, "Wow! You wear them? You have money!" I didn"t
know why they thought 150-yuan ($22) sandals were for wealthy people. I had never heard that brand
name (which I can"t remember) before.
While visiting my family in Canada, we were talking about fake products(假冒商品) in China. As a
writer, I don"t accept that readers pirate(盗版) my books and I would consider myself a thief if I ever
buy them. A young relative asked, "What about your purse?"
"What"s the problem with my purse?" I countered.
"It"s a Yves Saint-Laurent; do you mean you paid the full price?"
"How can you think I bought a YSL? I bought it because of size, color and price."
She picked up the purse and pointed to the steel YSL on it. Believe it or not, I had not noticed it till
then.
When Pearl Market used to sell watches, I happened to need one and went there for the large
choice they offered. What I wanted was a watch to see the time, I insisted.
They had no Chinese brands, only Cartier, Citizen, Seiko, Rolex. Having refused several ming pai
copies, I was leaving without buying when I saw a black one.
"Diesel, what a strange name for a watch," I thought. Wasn"t diesel something that went into a gas
tank? The business deal went quickly; I offered 35 yuan and left with the watch.
B. He supports fake products.
C. He believes they are symbols of status.
D. He is strongly against fake products.
B. Because there were many famous brands.
C. Because he might make a better choice here.
D. Because he wanted to buy a fake watch.
B. Fake products should be banned.
C. Following fashion makes much sense.
D. True beauty comes from one"s actions.

home. Mr. Carr, the boss, stared at him and said: "Hold on, Alfred. Maybe you"d be good enough to
take the things out of your pockets and leave them here before you go." Alfred"s face got red. After a
little hesitation, he took out what he had stolen. Mr. Carr said, "Maybe I should call your mother and
let her know I"m going to have to put you in prison."
Alfred thought his mother would come rushing in, eyes burning with anger. But, to his surprise, she
arrived wearing a smile. "Hello, I"m Alfred"s mother. Is he in trouble?" she said. Mr. Carr was surprised,
too. He had expected Alfred"s mother to come in nervously, shaking with fear, asking with wet eyes for
a mercy for her son. But no, she was most calm, quiet and pleasant and was making Mr. Carr feel guilty…Soon Mr. Carr was shaking his head in agreement with what she was saying. "Of course", he said, "I don"t want to be cruel. You are right. Sometimes, a little good advice is the best thing for a boy at certain times
in his life and it often takes the youths long time to get sense into their heads." And he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins"s hand.
Back home, without even looking at Alfred, she said, "You are a bad luck. It is one thing after another, always has been. Why do you stand there so stupidly? Go to bed." In his bedroom, Alfred heard his
mother in the kitchen. There was no shame in him, just pride in his mother"s strength. He felt he must tell her how great she was. As he got to the kitchen, he saw his mother drinking a cup of tea. He was shocked
by what he saw. His mother"s face was a frightened, broken one. It was not the same cool, bright face he
saw earlier in the drug store. As she lifted the tea cup, her hand shook. And some of the tea splashed on
the table. Her lips moved nervously. She looked very old. He watched his mother without making a sound. The picture of his mother made him want to cry. He felt his youth coming to an end. He saw all the troubles he brought his mother in her shaking hand and the deep lines of worry in her grey face. It seemed to him
that this was the first time he had ever really seen his mother.

object that caused me to jump. It was a snake skin that had been shed by one of our many garden snakes.
"Isn"t it beautiful?" said my wideeyed sevenyearold daughter.
I stared at the organic wrapper and thought to myself that it really wasn"t that beautiful, but I have
learned never to appear uninterested with children. They see only good quality and excellence in the
world until educated otherwise.
"Why does it do this?" Sarah asked.
"Snakes shed their skin because they need to renew themselves." I explained. "Why do they need to
renew themselves?" Sarah asked.
I suddenly remembered an article on this page many years ago where the writer was expressing her
concept of renewal. She used layers of paper over a wall to describe how we hide our original selves, and
said that by peeling away those layers one by one, we see the original beneath. "We often need to shed our
skins and those coatings that we cover ourselves with." I said to my now absorbed daughter. "We outgrow
some things and find other ones unwanted or unnecessary. Tills snake no longer needs this skin. It is probably too crinkly (起皱的) for him, and he probably doesn"t think he looks as smart in it as he once did."
Sarah was getting the point. As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, although slightly, that
renewal is part of progress; that we need to take a good look at ourselves, our rooms, schoolwork and
creativity, and see what we need to keep and what we need to cast off. I was careful to point out that this
is a natural consequence of their growth.
"I see, Dad." said Sarah and jumped off my lap and ran off.
I hoped she would remember this. That often, in order to find our real selves underneath the layers of
community and culture with which we cover ourselves year after year, we need to start examining these
layers. We need to gently peel some away, as we recognize them to be worthless or unnecessary; or at
best, store the ones thrown away as mementoes (念想) of our promotion to a better vitality or spirit.

B. shows concern for nature and culture
C. can grasp the chance to educate children
D. often encourages his daughter to raise questions
B. we should renew ourselves to get improved
C. snakes shed their skins to renew themselves
D. we should explore our original nature underneath
It 1 me of how many people I"ve seen who take the yellow light as a 2 to go faster.I also
can"t understand why people don"t move when the traffic light has turned green. Above all, there
are those 3 situations in which someone doesn"t even 4 that the light turns red, and just keeps
going. That is why so many 5 happen! All these situations make me 6 the purpose of traffic lights.
7 , it"s even more frightening to imagine letting people make their own decisions at __8 crossroads.Do the biggest cars get to go first? Who decides who goes next? So I guess I do like the idea of a
system to 9 traffic. And I"ll do my best to 10 the traffic rules: to go, to be cautious, and to stop
when I"m 11 to.
It occurs to me that my 12 have done much the same for me 13 teaching me how to live.
They have given me many 14 lights: to get along well with others, to listen and talk to them, to help
others, and to 15 with joy and purpose. They have also given me some red lights 16 my life goes
astray(误入歧途): not to be greedy, to keep my temper, and to control my desires. And there 17
have been some yellow caution lights: to watch how much I drink, to keep control of my behavior, and
to 18 school regularly and work hard.
If I obey these rules, my life will be as 19 as it can be.Just as I"m wise to pay attention to the
traffic lights when I"m walking across the street, I"m wise to pay attention to the" 20 signals" given to
me by my parents.
