example, in the United States, some people think that you can catch a cold if
your feet get cold. So mothers tell small children to wear warm boots in the winter. In other places, including parts of the Middle East, some people
believe that strong winds cause colds. So, on trains and buses, people usually don’t like to sit next to open windows. In parts of Europe, some people
think that wearing wet clothes will give you a cold. They say that after you go swimming, you should quickly put on dry clothes. Today, scientists know
that colds are caused by a virus (病毒). But the old ideas are still very strong, and many people still follow them to avoid (避免) getting ill.        1. In the United States, people think you can catch a cold if ______________________.A. you wear wet clothes

阅读理解。     Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those
tests included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all
kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well
their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person
eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact
appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don"t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is
because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight
instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.1. During the test, those who were tested were given_______.
A. no breakfast at all
B. very rich breakfast
C. little food for breakfast
D. different foods or none
2.The results of the test show that_______.
A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies
B. breakfast has little to do with a person"s work
C. a person will work better if he has simple breakfast
D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast
3.The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don"t eat breakfast, you will_______.
A. lose weight
B. not lose weight
C. be healthier
D. gain a lot of weight

A. Poor breakfasts affect those who work with their brains.
B. Morning diet(节食)may cause one to get fatter.
C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight-losing.

阅读理解。     MSG(monosodium glutamate) is a food additive (食品添加剂), which has been widely used by many
food factories all over the world since it appeared first in Japan in 1909.
MSG is a substance that is added to some food to improve its original (原先的) taste and color. It is
used in foods around the world such as cakes, bread, frozen meats, fish and vegetables. In the beginning,
people thought MSG was safe just like salt and sugar. However, in 1968 some people reported they
seemed to have bad reactions (反应) to MSG after having had a meal at a restaurant. They included
headaches and quick heartbeat (心跳). It was also reported that MSG excited a person"s brain and
caused his death in Japan. Scientists think that MSG may lead to many neurological disorders (神经
紊乱). In mice studies done by a university, the evidence showed the mice didn"t want to eat the food
including MSG.
Today many food companies "hide" MSG on food labels (标签) by using different names. If you see
"natural flavorings", "hydrolyzed protein" and "spices" in a food label, you are probably seeing a hidden
way to "report" MSG in a food label. Every time we have a meal in a restaurant, we always feel the food
very delicious to taste, but sometimes it is dangerous for our health because some poisonous food
additives have been added to the food.
To protect people"s health, our governments, from central to local, are taking actions to stop factories
producing poisonous food additives.1. Monosodium Glutamate is _____.
A. a food
B. an additive
C. a factory
D. a country
2. MSG is often used in _____.
A. frozen meats
B. cups
C. clothes
D. book covers
3. The examples in the second paragraph tell us _____.
A. the food including MSG is delicious
B. people like to eat in a restaurant
C. mice like eating the food including MSG
D. MSG is not safe sometimes
4. If you see "natural flavorings"," hydrolyzed protein" and "spices" in a food label, you will know _____.
A. you must eat the food in a hidden way
B. the food label must be hidden
C. MSG is probably added to the food
D. you must report the food to your parents
5. The underlined word "substance" in the article means _____.
A. color
B. material
C. taste
D. food
