what was thought to be a very serious heart disease.
Aunt Edith doesn"t accept defeat (击败) easily. She began studying medical reports in the library
and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon (外科医生), Dr. Michael
DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article
said Dr. DeBakey"s fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn"t possibly pay them. But could he tell
her of someone whose fee she could pay?
So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live: her three children,
who would be on their own in three or four more years, her little girl was dreaming of traveling and
seeing the world. There wasn"t a word of self-pity---only warmth and humor and the joy of living.
She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.
A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn"t wait to come in; she stood in the hall and
read aloud: "Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will
be no charge for either the hospital or the operation. Signed-Michael DeBakey."
That was seven years ago. Since then, Aunt Edith has been around the world. Her three children
are happily married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people I know—all
because of an open heart surgeon who knew how to honor his profession, and how to open his
own heart.

from mine. There was a woman who lived there whom I had never met. I could see her seated by her
window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was
unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself: "Why doesn"t that woman wash her window?
It really looks terrible."
One morning I decided to clean my apartment, including washing the window on the inside. Late in
the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest.
What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was very clear. Her window was
clean!
Then, it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评)her dirty window, but all the time I was
looking at hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through
the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(评判) someone, I asked myself first: "Am I looking at him
through my own dirty window?" Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the
world about me more clearly.

was the funniest-looking dog I"d ever seen. Short thin curly hair covered her sausage-shaped(香肠形)
body. Her eyes always seemed surprised. And her tail looked like a mouse"s tail.
She was brought to the vet because her owners didn’t want her any more. I thought Minnie had a
sweet personality, though. "No one should judge her by her looks," I thought. Finally, I advertised Minnie
in the local paper. "Funny-looking dog, well-behaved, needs a loving family."
When a boy called, I warned him that Minnie was strange-looking. The boy on the phone told me that
his grandfather’s sixteen-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie no matter what. I gave Minnie
a good bath. Then we waited for them to arrive. At last, an old car stopped in front of the vet"s. Two kids
ran to the door. They picked Minnie up and rushed her out to their grandfather, who was waiting in the
car. I hurried behind them to see his reaction to Minnie. Inside the car, the grandfather held Minnie in his
arms and stroked her soft hair. She licked(舔)his face. Her tail wagged around so quickly that it looked
like it might fly off her body.
"She"s perfect!"the old man said happily.
I was thankful that Minnie had found a good home.
Suddenly, I saw that the grandfather’s eyes were a milky white colour-he was blind.
