Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong, and nothing seemed to go right? Not too long ago I was having one of those days. I was discouraged, weary, and plain sad. My focus was on me. After all, no one else was experiencing the same trials I was. I expressed my upset state to my mother, hoping for some pity. Instead, she said, “I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too. Why don’t you make her some cookies and take them to her this afternoon?” I didn’t really want to, but decided that I didn’t want to go back to my other problems just yet. I made the cookies and arranged them on a little plate. Then I made a card with a sunflower on it and wrote a small note of empathy. That afternoon I dropped by my friend’s house. I went to the door and rang the bell. Soon, Jamie came to the door and looked at me in surprise for the unexpected visit. Before she could say anything I rushed, “ I heard you were having a hard day and decided to bring you something. I hope your day goes better.” The look that came over Jamie’s face was one that I could never put into words. It was as if a darkened sky was suddenly lit with the golden rays of the sun; it was as if in that small act, her day was brightened. I got back into the car and for some amazing reason; I felt a lot better myself. That day I experienced the truth that James Barri attempted to describe, “ Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” 小题1:Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Sunshine on a Rainy Day | B.Discouraged by Nothing | C.Giving Help to a Friend | D.Experience a Cheerless Day | 小题2:The author made cookies and arranged them on a plate _________.A.so as to show off his skills | B.to stop thinking about his own worries | C.not to let his mother feel down | D.not to show his sadness to others | 小题3:How did Jamie feel when seeing the author’s coming?A.She lit up very soon. | B.She was surprised and scared. | C.She couldn’t express herself. | D.She poured out all her worries. | 小题4:What do you think of the author’s mother?A.Sympathetic. | B.Willing. | C.Instructional. | D.Selfish. | 小题5:The passage is mainly about _________.A.dealing with others when they are angry | B.adjusting well the mental condition | C.taking mother’s advice every hour | D.enjoying oneself at any time |

My father was in the navy, which meant that my mother was married to both my father and the sea. As was often the case, we had to pack our belongings into boxes and 36 those we had grown to love. We would arrive at our new home and find ourselves once again 37 at the pier(码头)waving good-bye to my father as his 38 pulled him away from us. My mother would turn my brother and me around before the ship was out of 39 , wipe our tears, and take us back home to start the process of 40 in the new environment again. Throughout the years of changing 41 , schools and friends, there remained one constant in my childhood — my mother. For both my 42 and me, she was the cook, maid and teacher. She played these roles while 43 some type of part-time job. Leaving a promising career is just one of the 44 which my mother made for my family as we moved around the world with our father every three years or so. 45 she had to deal with only a small budget, my mother 46 managed to make each house to be the very home that is safe and 47 . This probably sounds like a depressing way to live, 48 with two small children: “single” parenthood, short-term friendships, and the inability to 49 a career or establish a home. But it was not for my mother. She turned this 50 into adventure for us all! Each relocation was a chance to 51 another part of the world. My mother greeted each new culture, climate and neighborhood. Each new house was a 52 to rearrange furniture, make curtains and 53 pictures. Every part-time job was an opportunity to learn something new and work with interesting people. No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a 54 attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so 55 all those years of my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.

Years later we realized her marks were a 42 . My mother was illiterate(文盲). When I entered high school, I was a 43 student, but not for long. I began to like fancy clothes. I wanted to 44 other guys. I went from an A-student to a B-student to a C-student. One night my mother came home from her various jobs and I 45 about not having enough Italian knit shirts. My father never wanted his children to know what he did for a living. Dad worked in Plant C. Lying beside Lake Erie, it saw him in at sunrise and out at nightfall. Sometimes my mother would take my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and me to the public beach in our hometown of Ashtabula. She’d gather us round and point to the smokestacks, coughing clouds into the sky. “Wave to daddy!” she’d shout. Four little hands would shoot into the air. I never knew what Dad did in Plant C, but during 34 years of hard work, he had surgery (手术) on his shoulder and hand. At 48, he had his first heart attack. He retired in 1993, right after the last kid graduated from college. But the damage was done. A few years later, the next heart attack killed him. I saw my dad in plant C only once, when I took dinner to him. That night, I looked at my father, covered in sweat and coal, and for the first time I knew why he was so often angry for no reason. Recently my father’s friend, Toby Workman, walked me there. I knew my father never wanted me to see it. At every station, he described the job and the danger. It was like listening to a foreign language. I walked past many DANGER signs. Toby put his hand on my shoulder. “Look”, he said, “you need to understand something. Your dad was a maintenance mechanic. He worked the most dangerous job. If something broke, he fixed it. ” A few days later, my daughter graduated from college. I gave her the hard hat Toby handed to me as I left, and this note: “Whenever you feel something difficult, put this on, look in the mirror, and remember your roots.” 小题1:What is the purpose of the passage?A.In memory of the author’s mother | B.to know about what the father did. | C.In memory of the author’s father. | D.to remind the family to live well. | 小题2:Which of the following is TRUE of the facts about the author’s father?A.He didn’t suffer a heart attack until he retired. | B.He always faced danger while working. | C.He was satisfied with his job. | D.He worked in Plant C for 48 years in all. | 小题3:When the author saw her father in Plant C, ___.A.her father was fixing a broken machine. | B.she didn’t recognize her father. | C.she understood him about his bad temper. | D.her father was angry about her coming. | 小题4:When Toby Workman described the author’s father’s job, the author ____ .A.felt familiar with the job | B.decided to do the same work. | C.wanted to learn a foreign language | D.felt much puzzled | 小题5:The author gave her daughter the hat to hope that her daughter could _______ .A.get encouraged by her grandfather | B.overcome all difficulties by wearing it | C.remember her grandfather | D.follow her grandfather’s work |

My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my success. If I won a spelling contest(竞赛) at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I got a promotion(提升), I"d call my father right away and he"d rush out to tell all his friends. In 1970,when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I don"t know which of us was more excited. Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their loves not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug(拥抱) their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity for nothing could have felt more natural. He was a curious man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown to buy a motorcycle. Unfortunately, my father and his motorcycle didn"t get along too well. He fell off it so often that he got rid of it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again trusted any vehicle with less than four wheels.
