The hole in the Earth"s ozone layer (臭氧层)has until now protected Antarctica from the worst effects
of global warming. But scientists have warned that as the hole closes up in the next few decades,
temperatures on the continent could rise by around 3C on average, with melting ice contributing to a
global sea level increase of up to 1. 4 metres.
In the past decades the western Antarctic has seen rapid ice loss as the world has warmed, but the
other parts of the continent have, paradoxically, been cooling, resulting in a 10% increase in ice in the seas
around the region. This is because the hole in the ozone layer has increased cold winds in Antarctica,
making much of the continent surface colder than usual.
But now that the gasses that cause the ozone hole have been banned, scientists expect the hole to
repair itself within the next 50 to 60 years. By then the cooling effect will have faded out and the
Antarctic will face the full impact of global warming. This means an increase in average air temperatures
of around 3? and a reduction in sea ice by around a third.
The biggest threat to the continent comes from warming seas. Robert Johnson, a scientist who
monitors Antarctica ice sheets, said, "The ice sheets in Antarctica are hundreds of metres thick. But
once warm ocean waters start flowing underneath, the ice will begin thinning and could break up very
quickly. " Thinning ice sheets cause ice to break away from the continent and to melt even faster.
Escaping ice from western Antarctica has already resulted in a 10% rise in global sea level in recent
decades.
Johnson believes that international action to reduce global warming is required immediately or it may
be too late. "Everything is connected-Antarctica may be a long way away but it is an important part of
the Earth"s  system," said Johnson. "It contains 90% of the world"s ice, 70% of the world"s fresh water
and that is enough, if it melts completely,to raise sea levels by 63 metres. "
Even in a worsecase situation scientists don"t expect the ice to entirely disappear, but predict that,
because of the melting ice sheets, average sea level rise will be around 1. 4 metres higher by the end of
the century. 1. The underlined word "paradoxically" (in Paragraph 2) most probably means "________". A. rapidly

阅读理解     If you are having trouble falling asleep, you are in good company. About 65% of Americans said they
have sleeping problems a few nights each week, according to a recent study by the National Sleep
Foundation. Sleeping too little can lead to a higher risk of becoming fat and getting depressed(沮丧的).
But before you go to a doctor for advice, it is worth examining your sleeping habits one more time. Some
of your favorite evening habits may have something to do with the sleeping problems.
     1.Setting a Bright Alarm Clock.
The light of your bright alarm clock can prevent you from falling asleep. You can make your room as
dark as possible. Cover the bright numbers with a book or consider buying a small travel clock. Your
cellphone alarm may also do the trick.
    2.Counting Sheep
When you just can"t fall asleep, it"s useless to stay in bed to count sheep. If you"ve been trying to fall
asleep for more than 30 minutes, the National Sleep Foundation suggests you get up to do some reading or watch TV for a while. Such activities will make you sleepy. Before you know it, you"ll be going back to
bed really tired.
     3. Exercising Late at Night
Daytime workouts(锻炼) will keep you full of energy for hours. That"s why you don"t want to exercise within three hours of hitting the sack. Fierce(剧烈的)physical activity raise your body temperature and
pumps your energy level-both are bad for a good night"s sleep.1. What can we learn from the first sentence of the passage?

Scientists studying the impact of climate change on the Arctic need to consider ways to reduce their
own carbon footprints(碳排放量), says Ryan Brook, a researcher who regularly flies north to study the
health of caribous (驯鹿). He calls on scientists to show leadership by examining and sharing ways to
reduce the impact of working in polar regions.
"The importance of the research is not at question here. It is important to our understanding of and
adapting to climate change. But we need to think about better approaches." says Brook.
"This is an issue for all scientists, though polar researchers often travel particularly long distances
using commercial air travel. We also rely extensively on small aircraft, icebreakers, and snowmobiles, all
of which produce large amounts of carbon. "
Brook studies the health of caribous herds in Nunavut and Northwest Territories. He works with
northern wildlife managers. This work typically takes him north five or six times per year and when he
calculated his own carbon footprint, he was not happy with the result.
"My research footprints are about the same as the annual footprints of an average Toronto resident.
Basically, I have two footprints-my own personal life, which is moderate, and my research footprint."
Climate scientists can rightly argue that Arctic research is a specialized field and the community of
scientists who travel north is relatively small. Even if all scientists working in the north reduced their
carbon emissions, it would not make a big impact on the global scale. For Brook, it"s the option that
matters.
There are ways researchers can reduce the amount of carbon they use. Some helicopters use less
fuel than others. Solar and wind power are alternatives to gasfired generators. And while carbon offsets
(抵消) don"t reduce the amount of carbon emitted, they are an easy first step.
"There aren"t necessarily any easy answers, but we need to start talking about it." says Brook. "This is
particularly important for the next generation of scientists being trained and I hope to see them become
leaders in this issue."1. The underlined word"It" in Para. 2 refers to________. A. the research of climate change on the Arctic
B. the study of the health of caribous
C. the impact of working in polar regions
D. the reduction of polar scientists" carbon emissions2. What did Brook find when he calculated his own carbon footprints?A. His carbon footprints are more than the annual footprints of a Toronto resident.
B. His personal life footprints are more than the annual footprints of a Toronto resident.
C. His research footprints are about the same as his personal life footprints.
D. His personal life footprints are more than his research footprints. 3. Brook"s opinion is challenged by the statement that____. A. arctic research is very important
B. the Arctic is a special environment
C. the footprints of Arctic scientists are small
D. Brook"s situation is not a common phenomenon4. We can infer from the last paragraph that________. A. we should take actions immediately instead of just talking
B. it"s easy to start talking about the problem of carbon emissions
C. it"s necessary now to pay attention to the problem of research footprints
D. the next generation of scientists are more interested in research footprints
