Department stores sell ready-to-wear clothing, which is also called ready-made clothing.
Such clothing is made in fixed sizes. Those people who find that ready-made clothing fits
them well can save money by buying it. Most often, People do not fit exactly into a producer"s
size. Their clothing must be changed to make it fit better. However, most changes are not
very expensive. The small cost of most changes means that ready-made clothing can meet the
needs of most customers.
Those who can afford it often get someone to design (设计) and make their clothing. Such
clothing is called custom-made. The person who makes it measures (测量) the customer, and
then sews it so that it fits perfectly. Changes are not needed. Custom-made clothing is largely
sewn by hand, has better quality, better material, and is of the style you have chosen. Of course,
it costs much more than ready-to-wear clothing. You need to pay the difference for the special
fitting and better skill that you are receiving. This often means that you spend double or mor
than you would for a ready-made garment.
Custom-made clothing is not always that much better than ready-made clothing. It costs more
partly because only one garment has been made, just for you. Companies that produce ready-made
products make thousands of garments at a time. This means they can buy large amounts of material.
Workers cut each size by the hundreds. Companies work out ways to make the garments, quickly
by machine and pay workers according to their skill. Thus they can sell the finished products at a
low price while still making money. Most of the clothing sold in the United States is made in this way.
Customers gain from the lower prices which are made possible by mass production. It may or may
not give them high quality.

People often say, "Even without stepping out of my house I know all that has been
happening in the world."
I think that is quite true, especially in modern times.
We get all kinds of news from newspaper and TV and the Internet. This helps us to
understand the developing world, without having to go to the places where events are
really taking place.
Newspapers not only carry news but also teach us many useful things, such as first
aid, cooking, playing games and chess, how to take good photographs and enrich us with
common sense.

through the Internet.

Dear Lan Lan,
I"m now writing to you at Hartsop, a village in the Lake District, a place to have
most beautiful scenery (景色) in English couple here to spend Christmas with them.
This was planned for overseas students to know British way of life by living with
British families.
We came two days before Christmas and during our stay, we have had everything
we expected. Christmas turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas puddings, Christmas parties
and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing (有趣的),
but above all these, we are deeply touched by the hospitality (好客) of the family, Roger
and Anne Marie.
Anne Marie was a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing
dishes and showing us around. Roger, who was a doctor, knows a lot about China and still
wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that
than we do. In the evenings, we all sit around the fireplace with Tim, a lovely dog, by our
side. Like long-time-no-see friends, we talk about all the things that have happened or we
hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.
After three months away from home, we are again feeling how sweet a home can be.
Roger and Anne Marrie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make
us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring
us a person-to-person feeling, instead of a British-to-Chinese feeling. They make us believe
that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in
every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved. How I wish Mum and Dad could
meet them!
How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here,
the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about "when we go back home
next year…" and soon we will turn this into "when we go back home THIS year…" for the
New Year"s Day is coming. Miss you.
