阅读理解     As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic
essentials of life-food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using
technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other
hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn a
given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary for
comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.
I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be
working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also
expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows
that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the
housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as scrubbing
the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or sweeping, or
making beds.
By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be
trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or
more standard operations, when switched by the housewife.

1. As civilization develops in the direction of technology, ________.
A. the basic essentials of life must be supplied
B. it is important to supply the basic essentials of life
C. it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of life
D. it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life

2. According to the author, we are faced with________.
A. the choice of providing and fulfilling our needs
B. the choice of using technology
C. the choice of earning a standard of living
D. a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours

3. What alternative will mankind have chosen in future?
A. To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours.
B. To raise our standard of living.
C. To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary.
D. To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.

4. Now most housewives wish to________.
A. stop doing their housework
B. do more housework to improve their life
C. get rid of the heavy burden of their housework
D. do only simple and light housework

A. to take the place of housewives
B. to help manage a family

D. to provide the daily necessities for man

阅读理解     Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive
people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations.
Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive
defendants(被告). But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder,it is harmful
to a woman.
Handsome male executives were thought as having more integrity than plainer men;effort and
ability were thought to account for their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones;their
success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable
than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes
was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of attractive overnight
successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is thought to be more
feminine and an attractive man more masculine(有男子气概的)than the less attractive ones. Thus,
an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a
traditionally masculine position appears to lack the"masculine"qualities required.
This is true even in politics."When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and
women differently,"says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness
on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs,
one of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were
of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote for
them.
The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men,but the women who had
been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.

1. The underlined word "liability"(in Para.1)most probably means "________".
A. misfortune
B. instability
C. disadvantage
D. burden

2. In traditionally female jobs,attractiveness________.
A. reinforces(加强)the feminine qualities required
B. makes women look more honest and capable
C. is of primary importance to women
D. often enables women to succeed quickly

3. Bowman"s experiment reveals that when it comes to politics,attractiveness________.
A. turns out to be an obstacle to men
B. affects men and women alike
C. has as little effect on men as on women
D. is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women

4. It can be inferred from the passage that people"s views on beauty are often________.
A. practical
B. prejudiced
C. oldfashioned
D. pessimistic

5. The author writes this passage to________.
A. demand equal rights for women
B. emphasize the importance of appearance
C. discuss the negative aspects of being attractive
D. give advice to jobseekers who are attractive

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably
not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning
when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don"t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and
unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates that stress /
worry and (lack of ) sleep are directly related. Dr. Winkle says, "The more we worry, the less we sleep,
the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night"s sleep," he adds,
"we can often find the energy to deal with what"s worrying us."
So, what is a good night"s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order
to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping
longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give
themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or
listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as
mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain
caffeine and will keep you awake. "When you put the light out," Dr. Winkle says, "concentrate on
relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you"ll be asleep before you know it."
