adequate to describe classes of products. In today"s prosperous societies, the distinction has become
unclear because so many wants have been turned into needs. A writer, for instance, can work with paper
and pencils. These are legal needs for the task. But the work can be done more quickly and efficiently
with a word processor. Thus a computer is soon viewed as a need rather than a want.
In the field of marketing, consumer goods are classed according to the way in which they are
purchased. The two main classes are convenience goods and shopping goods. Two lesser types are
specialty goods and unsought (主动提供的) goods. It must be emphasized that all of these types are
based on the way shoppers think about products, not on the nature of the products themselves. What is
regarded as a convenience item in France (wine, for example) should be a specialty goods in the United
States.
People do not spend a great deal of time shopping for such convenience items as groceries,
newspapers, toothpaste, aspirin, and candy. The buying of convenience goods may be done routinely, as
some families buy groceries once a week. Such regularly purchased items are called staples. Sometimes
convenience products are bought without enough thinking; someone has a sudden desire for an ice cream
sundae(圣代) on a hot day. Or they may be purchased as emergency items.
Shopping goods are items for which customers search. They compare prices, quality, and styles, and
may visit a number of stores before making a decision. Buying an automobile is often done this way.
Shopping goods fall into two classes; those that are recognized as basically the same and those that
are regarded as different. Items that are looked upon as basically the same include such things as home
appliances, television sets, and automobiles. Having decided on the model desired, the customer is
primarily interested in getting the item at the most favorable price. Items regarded as essentially different
include clothing, furniture, and dishes. Quality, style and fashion will either take precedence(优先) over
price, or they will not matter at all.
B. needs and wants can"t be separated clearly
C. the way to distinguish the products is unimportant
D. a computer is a need rather than a want
B. the types of the product lie on the people rather than its nature
C. Frenchmen often drink but Americans sometimes do

children, a study found.
Research revealed one in five parents has ditched old classics such as Snow White and the Seven
Dwarves and Rapunzel in favour of more modern books. One third of parents said their children have
been left in tears after hearing the horrible details of Little Red Riding Hood. And nearly half of mothers
and fathers refuse to read Rumplestiltskin to their kids as the themes of the story are kidnapping and
execution. Similarly, Goldilocks and the Three Bears was also a tale likely to be left on the book shelf as
parents felt it forgives stealing.
The survey of 2,000 adults was conducted to mark the launch of the hit US drama GRIMM, which
starts tonight at 9pm on Watch, and sees six episodes based on traditional fairytales. The poll found a
quarter of parents polled wouldn"t consider reading a fairytale to their child until they had reached the age
of five, as they prompt too many awkward questions from their offspring.
Steve Hornsey, General Manager of Watch, said: "Bedtime stories are supposed to soothe children and
send them off to sleep soundly. But as we see in GRIMM, fairytales can be dark and dramatic tales so it"s
understandable that parents worry about reading them to young children."
"As adults we can see the innocence in fairytales, but a five year old with an over active imagination
could take things too seriously.Despite the dark nature of classic fairytales, as we see in GRIMM, good
will triumph over evil and there is always a moral to the story."
The study also found two thirds of mums and dads try to avoid stories which might give their children
nightmares.
However, half of parents said traditional tales are more likely to have a strong moral message than a lot
of modern kids" books, such as The Gruffalo, The Hungary Caterpillar and the Mr. Men books.

mainly on the Sea Islands and coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Floride, the Gullah people,
an African-American group, have a rich culture including their own language. It is a Creole language
created by slaves who came to the US from the West Africa in the 1800s. It combines West African
languages with English.
For many years efforts have been made to save the Gullah language. One project began in 1979. Its
goal was to translate the New Testament part of the Bible into Gullah. Experts say that it was a difficult
process because Gullah is not a written language. It is a spoken language only.
A team of Gullah speakers began working on the translation to make the Bible easier to understand
for those who spoke Gullah as their main language. The Gullah version is called De Nyew Testament. It
is written in English on one side of the page, and next to it, there is a Gullah translation. De Nyew
Testament was published by the American Bible Society. The project also received help from the
Summer Institute of Linguistics, Wycliffe Bible Translators, the United Bible Societies and the Penn
Centre .
Experts believe that the translated Bible is a major step towards saving the Gullah language and
traditions. "This is more than a Bible translation," says Robert Hodgson, at the American Bible Society.
"De Nyew Testament raises the Gullah language and culture to a new level." Ardell Greene is a member
of the translation team. She calls the book "a treasure". She says that the Gullah version of the Bible will
be read in churches and will help young people keep the Gullah language alive.
B. something difficult to understand
C. a spoken form of the Gullah language
D. the effort to save the Gullah language
B. Gullah is influenced by both English and West African languages.
C. De Nyew Testament is a complete Bible translation.
D. Ardell Greene thinks highly of De Nyew Testament.
B. Different versions of the Bible.
C. The history of the Gullah people.
D. The culture of the Gullah people.
eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else"s eyes and look away, shift positions in a chair. These actions
we assume are random and incidental. But researchers have discovered in recent years that there is a
system to them almost as consistent and comprehensive as language.
Every culture has its own body language, and children absorb its difference along with spoken
language. A Frenchman talks and moves in French. The way an Englishman crosses his legs is nothing
like the way a male American does it. In talking, with a future-tense verb, Americans often gesture with
a forward movement.
There are regional idioms too. An expert can sometimes pick out a native of Wisconsin just by the
way he uses his eyebrows during conversation. Your sex, moral background, social class and personal
style all influence your body language.
Usually, the wordless communication acts to qualify the words. What the non-verbal elements
express very often, and very efficiently, is the emotional side of the message. When a person feels liked
or disliked, often it"s a case of "not what he said but the way he said it." Psychologist Albert Mehrabian
has come up with this formula: total impact of a message = 7% verbal + 38% gestural + 55% facial.
Experts in kinesics - the study of communication through body movement - are not prepared to spell
out a vocabulary or gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with
someone or rejecting something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example:
When a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man"s eyes a little longer than is usual,
it can be a sign of respect and affection; it can be a challenge to the professor"s authority; or it can be
something else entirely. The experts look for patterns in the context, not for an isolated meaningful gesture.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

Take in this fresh sea air in this beautiful coastal setting as you cruise the famous Garden Route in the
Western Cape in South Africa. A wild life break is a must, as is enjoying great meal stops along the route. There are wild life reserves throughout the Garden Route National Park you can swing into and spend a
sleepy morning in a car looking for giraffes and lions. And just over your shoulder in the big blue there are whales to be watched (if the season is right).

the pass. And from the top, it"s just a short sweep away from the Swiss border, so if you are gripped by
mountain road driving, you can drive from here down to Swiss ski resort Davos. Stelvio has 48 hairpins
(急弯) on the north side and 12 on the decent (陡坡) to Bormio, so this route is not recommended for
new drivers, or those with a fear of heights. This decent is is often featured in the Giro d"Italia, the Italian
version of the Tour de France, so you may have glimpsed it on the television.

boxer"s primary aim is to land as many blows as possible to the head and torso (躯干) of the opponent,
using strength and speed to dominate the contest. One of the oldest sports still practiced, boxing dates
back to thousands of years ago. Today the sport is popular in many parts of the world and encompasses (包括) both amateur and professional matches.
For most of the 20th century boxing attracted huge fans and media attention in the United States.
Some boxing champions became legendary, larger-than-life figures, such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis,
and Muhammad Ali. Criticized to varying degrees throughout its history for its violent nature and high
injury rate, boxing has somehow always managed to survive-and even thrive-as a sport.
Modern boxing regulations are based upon the 12 rules set out by British boxing officials in the
mid-19th century. These rules became known as the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, named after the
8th Marquess of Queensberry, John Sholto Douglas, who sponsored and published them. In addition
to in-the-ring rules, modern boxing also has specific regulations regarding eligibility for the fighters
themselves.
The modern rules for professional and amateur boxing differ, but both types of contests are divided
into time periods called rounds. In professional boxing, each round lasts three minutes; in amateur boxing,
two minutes. A one-minute rest period between rounds is standard. Amateur contests consist of three
rounds; professional contests may consist of up to 12 rounds. A bell is usually sounded by a timekeeper
to begin and end each round.
A key step in making boxing safer and more respectable was the introduction of gloves, ending brutal
bare-knuckle competition. Boxing gloves are heavily padded to soften the impact of the blow and to
protect the hands of the boxer. As an added protection, the hands are taped before being placed in the
gloves, which are essentially huge mittens. Professional gloves usually weigh between 170 and 226g;
amateur gloves average 226 to 340g.
B. People enjoy boxing because of its brutal nature.
C. Only professional players are allowed to attend boxing matches.
D. Boxing is a popular sport with a history of only 200 years.
B. this is because boxing is a sport which can bring good business
C. the reason for this cannot be fully explained
D. this is because there are many legendary boxers
B. The weight of gloves.
C. The size of boxing rings.
D. The signal to begin and end each round.
B. to advertise a band of boxing-related product
C. to discourage people from enjoying this violent sport
D. to get support for a sport with long tradition
B. It is a traditional sport, with little room for improvement.
C. It is a controversial sport, which nevertheless enjoys great public support.
