阅读理解。     Traditional fairytales are being abandoned by parents because they are too scary for their young
children, a study found.
Research revealed one in five parents has ditched old classics such as Snow White and the Seven
Dwarves and Rapunzel in favour of more modern books. One third of parents said their children have
been left in tears after hearing the horrible details of Little Red Riding Hood. And nearly half of mothers
and fathers refuse to read Rumplestiltskin to their kids as the themes of the story are kidnapping and
execution. Similarly, Goldilocks and the Three Bears was also a tale likely to be left on the book shelf as
parents felt it forgives stealing.
The survey of 2,000 adults was conducted to mark the launch of the hit US drama GRIMM, which
starts tonight at 9pm on Watch, and sees six episodes based on traditional fairytales. The poll found a
quarter of parents polled wouldn"t consider reading a fairytale to their child until they had reached the age
of five, as they prompt too many awkward questions from their offspring.
Steve Hornsey, General Manager of Watch, said: "Bedtime stories are supposed to soothe children and
send them off to sleep soundly. But as we see in GRIMM, fairytales can be dark and dramatic tales so it"s
understandable that parents worry about reading them to young children."
"As adults we can see the innocence in fairytales, but a five year old with an over active imagination
could take things too seriously.Despite the dark nature of classic fairytales, as we see in GRIMM, good
will triumph over evil and there is always a moral to the story."
The study also found two thirds of mums and dads try to avoid stories which might give their children
nightmares.
However, half of parents said traditional tales are more likely to have a strong moral message than a lot
of modern kids" books, such as The Gruffalo, The Hungary Caterpillar and the Mr. Men books.1.Why some parents don"t want to read Rumplestiltskin to their kids?A. Rumplestiltskin is too long

The Gullah people in the southern US have honored their culture for more than 100 years. Living
mainly on the Sea Islands and coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Floride, the Gullah people,
an African-American group, have a rich culture including their own language. It is a Creole language
created by slaves who came to the US from the West Africa in the 1800s. It combines West African
languages with English.
For many years efforts have been made to save the Gullah language. One project began in 1979. Its
goal was to translate the New Testament part of the Bible into Gullah. Experts say that it was a difficult
process because Gullah is not a written language. It is a spoken language only.
A team of Gullah speakers began working on the translation to make the Bible easier to understand
for those who spoke Gullah as their main language. The Gullah version is called De Nyew Testament. It
is written in English on one side of the page, and next to it, there is a Gullah translation. De Nyew
Testament
was published by the American Bible Society. The project also received help from the
Summer Institute of Linguistics, Wycliffe Bible Translators, the United Bible Societies and the Penn
Centre .
Experts believe that the translated Bible is a major step towards saving the Gullah language and
traditions. "This is more than a Bible translation," says Robert Hodgson, at the American Bible Society.
"De Nyew Testament raises the Gullah language and culture to a new level." Ardell Greene is a member
of the translation team. She calls the book "a treasure". She says that the Gullah version of the Bible will
be read in churches and will help young people keep the Gullah language alive.1. According to the passage, De Nyew Testament can be best seen as _______.A. a good version of the Bible
B. something difficult to understand
C. a spoken form of the Gullah language
D. the effort to save the Gullah language2. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. Gullah communities can be found in the southern US.
B. Gullah is influenced by both English and West African languages.
C. De Nyew Testament is a complete Bible translation.
D. Ardell Greene thinks highly of De Nyew Testament.3. What does this passage mainly focus on?A. Efforts to save the Gullah language.
B. Different versions of the Bible.
C. The history of the Gullah people.
D. The culture of the Gullah people.

阅读理解。     All of us communicate with one another non-verbally, as well as with words. We gesture with
eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else"s eyes and look away, shift positions in a chair. These actions
we assume are random and incidental. But researchers have discovered in recent years that there is a
system to them almost as consistent and comprehensive as language.
Every culture has its own body language, and children absorb its difference along with spoken
language. A Frenchman talks and moves in French. The way an Englishman crosses his legs is nothing
like the way a male American does it. In talking, with a future-tense verb, Americans often gesture with
a forward movement.
There are regional idioms too. An expert can sometimes pick out a native of Wisconsin just by the
way he uses his eyebrows during conversation. Your sex, moral background, social class and personal
style all influence your body language.
Usually, the wordless communication acts to qualify the words. What the non-verbal elements
express very often, and very efficiently, is the emotional side of the message. When a person feels liked
or disliked, often it"s a case of "not what he said but the way he said it." Psychologist Albert Mehrabian
has come up with this formula: total impact of a message = 7% verbal + 38% gestural + 55% facial.
Experts in kinesics - the study of communication through body movement - are not prepared to spell
out a vocabulary or gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with
someone or rejecting something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example:
When a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man"s eyes a little longer than is usual,
it can be a sign of respect and affection; it can be a challenge to the professor"s authority; or it can be
something else entirely. The experts look for patterns in the context, not for an isolated meaningful gesture.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
1. What idea does the author aim to convey in paragraph 2?
_________________________________________________________
2. Besides moral background, __________ are the other three factors affecting people"s body language.
3. From Albert"s formula, we learn that the body language __________.
4. What can you conclude from the examples given in paragraph 5?

Take in this fresh sea air in this beautiful coastal setting as you cruise the famous Garden Route in the
Western Cape in South Africa. A wild life break is a must, as is enjoying great meal stops along the route. There are wild life reserves throughout the Garden Route National Park you can swing into and spend a

阅读理解。     Boxing is a fist fighting sport between two matched combatants (对手) wearing padded gloves. A
boxer"s primary aim is to land as many blows as possible to the head and torso (躯干) of the opponent,
using strength and speed to dominate the contest. One of the oldest sports still practiced, boxing dates
back to thousands of years ago. Today the sport is popular in many parts of the world and encompasses (包括) both amateur and professional matches.
For most of the 20th century boxing attracted huge fans and media attention in the United States.
Some boxing champions became legendary, larger-than-life figures, such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis,
and Muhammad Ali. Criticized to varying degrees throughout its history for its violent nature and high
injury rate, boxing has somehow always managed to survive-and even thrive-as a sport.
Modern boxing regulations are based upon the 12 rules set out by British boxing officials in the
mid-19th century. These rules became known as the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, named after the
8th Marquess of Queensberry, John Sholto Douglas, who sponsored and published them. In addition
to in-the-ring rules, modern boxing also has specific regulations regarding eligibility for the fighters
themselves.
The modern rules for professional and amateur boxing differ, but both types of contests are divided
into time periods called rounds. In professional boxing, each round lasts three minutes; in amateur boxing,
two minutes. A one-minute rest period between rounds is standard. Amateur contests consist of three
rounds; professional contests may consist of up to 12 rounds. A bell is usually sounded by a timekeeper
to begin and end each round.
A key step in making boxing safer and more respectable was the introduction of gloves, ending brutal
bare-knuckle competition. Boxing gloves are heavily padded to soften the impact of the blow and to
protect the hands of the boxer. As an added protection, the hands are taped before being placed in the
gloves, which are essentially huge mittens. Professional gloves usually weigh between 170 and 226g;
amateur gloves average 226 to 340g. 1. Which of the following is true according to the information in the passage?A. Boxing is a violent sport with high injury rate.

阅读理解。     Chrysanthemums (菊花) are to the fall what tulips are to the spring.
In ancient China, chrysanthemums (or "mums" for short) were first planted thousands of
years ago. People chose the chrysanthemum as their Flower for October, a symbol of the rest and ease
that followed the season"s final harvest. Then they symbolized a scholar in retirement (隐居) and were
one of the four noble plants, along with bamboo, the plum flower, and orchid.
The Japanese hold the chrysanthemum as a symbol of the sun. They consider the orderly unfolding of
its petals to be a symbol of perfection. They also think that a single chrysanthemum petal placed in the
bottom of a wine glass encourages a long and healthy life. The Japanese even have a National
Chrysanthemum Day on September 9, known as the Festival of Happiness.
In the United States during colonial times, its popularity grew such that mums now reign as "Queen of
the Fall Flowers." Mums remain the most widely grown pot plant in the country and the largest
commercially produced flowers. Chrysanthemums generally represent cheerfulness and rest. So they are
welcomed throughout the British Isles and North America for any occasion, such as football games and
parties. In other countries such as Italy, Belgium and Austria, however, their association with the dead
makes chrysanthemums acceptable only for funerals and graves. 1. Why did people in ancient China choose the chrysanthemum as their Flower for October,
