It is difficult in the modern world to do anything other than a basic job without being able to read. Reading as a skill is the key to an educated workforce, which in turn is the bedrock of economic advancement, particularly in the present technological age. Studies have shown that by increasing the literacy skill of primary school children in the UK, the benefit to economy generally is in billions of pounds. The skill of reading is now no mere just an intellectual (知识的) or leisure activity, but rather a completely developed economic force.
Part of the problem with reading is that it is a skill which is not appreciated in most developed societies. This is an attitude that has forced a large number of the population in most Western nations to illiteracy (文盲). It might surprise people in countries outside the West to learn that in the United Kingdom, and indeed in some other European countries, the literacy rate has fallen to below that of so-called less developed countries.
There are also forces against reading in our modern society. It is not seen as cool among a younger generation more at home with computer screens or e-libraries.
And reading is not very appealing. Students at school, college or university, who read a lot are called bookworms. The term indicates the contempt (轻蔑) in which reading and learning are held in certain circles or subcultures. It is a criticism, like all such attacks, driven by the insecurity of those who are not literate or are semiliterate. Criticism is also a means, like all bullying, of keeping peers(同辈) in place so that they do not step out of line. Peer pressure among young people is so powerful that it often kills any attempts to change attitudes towards habits like reading.
But the negative senses apart, is modern Western society standing Canute-like (自以为是地) against an uncontrollable drop? I think not.

Around the age of 40, honest people may already admit to noticing changes in their mental abilities. This is the beginning of a gradual decline that in all too many of us will end with full-blown dementia(痴呆).
However, a few drugs that might do the job, known as “cognitive enhancement(认知增强)”, are already on the market, and a few dozen others are on the way. Perhaps the best-known is modafinil. Licensed to treat narcolepsy, the condition that causes people to suddenly fall asleep, it has notable effects in healthy people too. Modafinil can keep a person awake and his or her attention fixed for 90 hours straight, with none of anxiety, nervousness and bad concentration. In fact, with the help of modafinil, people who can hardly go to sleep can perform even better than their well-rested, un-medicated(未服药的) selves.
It’s an open secret that many, perhaps most, prescriptions for modafinil are written not for people who suffer from narcolepsy, but for those who simply want to stay awake. Similarly, many people are using Ritalin not because they suffer from attention problem or any other disorder, but because they want superior concentration during exams or heavy-duty activities.
Some drugs have also been specially designed to improve memory. Many of these seem to work, and without any major side effects. So why aren’t we all on cognitive enhancers already?
“We need to be careful what we wish for,” says Daniele Piomelli at the University of California at Irvine. Repairing and improving memory may have unwanted effects, he warns. “Eventually we may end up remembering things we don’t want to.”
56. According to the message, we can learn that originally modafinil is a drug designed for _____.
A. for both healthy and unhealthy people
B. the treatment of dementia
C. people who can hardly go to sleep
D. those suffering from falling asleep suddenly
57. The passage mainly talks about _____.
A. dementia—a threat to the old people B. modafinil—a nice drug for dementia
C. relevant drugs to a better brain D. cognitive enhancement
58. The underlined sentences in paragraph two wants to tell us that _____.
A. without modafinil people suffering from sleep problems cannot rest well
B. people lacking sleep can work better than they are in a healthy state if taking modafinil
C. modafinil has greater effects on healthy people if they take it
D. with modafinil people suffering from narcolepsy can fall asleep easily
59. What’s the writer’s attitude to the drugs mentioned in the passage?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective(客观的). D. Doubtful.

Dave needed to prepare for Saturday"s fishing trip. He went into his hall closet, where he had more than 20 rods and reels. Nowadays he went fishing twice a year at Big Bear, a huge lake in southern California about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.
California tries to improve the fishing industry by sponsoring(发起)a Free Fishing Day twice a ear, once in June and once in September. That’s enough for Dave. He went mostly because it was a cocial event with a few friends, not so much to catch fish. Even driving up a twisty(弯弯曲曲的)two-lane road was worth the trip. Let alone the big, beautiful houses and trees that lined the shore of the lake.
Preparing was a project in itself. Dace had even created a computer file named Fishing Trip. It was a checklist of 45 things to take to Big Bear. He took two rods, because on Free Fishing Day you were allowed to fish with two rods instead of the usual one rod. He took a sweatshirt, jeans, two pairs of socks, a heavy hooded jacket, winter gloves, and a scarf. He also took flip-flops, shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a big hat, and lightweight raincoat. If you go to Big Bear in June, you’d better be prepared for hot or cold, rain or shine.
He prepared a couple of magazines to read just in case the fish weren’t biting. He and his friends joked that the fish were always biting- in the spot you just left or the spot you were headed for.
After about an hour and a half; Dave had gathered all the items on his list into a neat pile next to his door. He went to bed knowing that tomorrow’s weather and fishing were unpredictable, but the good time with his friends was a given.
45.Dave went go Big Bear twice a year mainly to_________.
A.fish B.meet his friends
C.prepare for his fishing D.develop a project
46.Why had Dave created a computer file named Fishing Trip?

C.Because the good time with his friends was uncertain.
D.Because he wanted to buy some magazines on fishing.
47.On Free Fishing Day, people going fishing could use_________.
A.one fishing rod B.two fishing rods C.three fishing rods D.twenty fishing rods
48.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

C.An Unforgettable Fishing Day D.Preparing For a Fishing Trip

Members of Parliament (MPs) warned that the privacy(隐藏)of thousands of mobile phone users is in danger today because of Google"s new tracking system. In a motion(提案),they also warned that the system offers live tracking of mobiles through a website and called on Google to examine the service.

Google today insisted there was no threat to privacy .It said it was up to users to decide whether to make their location visible to other people and to decide who could monitor their position .The service was designed to help people keep in touch .

Here is a passage about learning a foreign language.
Outside of class, the most natural way of finding out if you are making mistakes is from other people’s responses. If the mistakes are too serious, your listeners will be asking you all the time what you mean. If they are not so serious, then people may be asking you whether you said such and such. That will tell you how close you are to speaking “cogently”.
Of course, there are other times when it is important to have errors pointed out. Your class assignments(作业) are probably marked in this way, in which case you need to spend time going over them to take advantage of the individual feedback. In some classes the teacher gets better and better at grammar because she does all the corrections, but the students make slow progress if, when an assignment is returned, they quickly stuff it into their folders without looking.
You are the person who should be connecting your error, even if the marker has signaled them, When you look at them, there are some steps to work through. One distinction that has been made about learners’ language is this. You make mistakes about rules that you already know but you make errors about points you haven’t learned yet. In other words, you can find your own mistakes, but not your errors. First, make sure you understand what you have written or said, or your correction will simply be another stab at the right answer. Next, decide on the best way of practicing the correct form. Would it help you to write out the sentence once more. Can you make up another similar sentence? Then you could test yourself in a few days time to see whether you have remembered the right form, Anyone can get it right immediately after being told. He challenge is to remember it and apply it later.
57.We can learn from the passage that__________in learning a foreign language.
A.making mistakes about rules can always be avoided
B.speaking is the only way to correct mistakes
C.getting and using responses is important
D.errors can be easily corrected
58.How can you know that you are making fewer mistakes when speaking a foreign language?
A.By following the suggestions the writer put forward.
B.By practicing the correct forms.
C.From the teacher’s getting better and better at grammar.
D.From your listeners responses.
59.The writer thinks some students make slow progress because__________.
A.they understand what they have written or said.
B.they have remembered the right form
C.they hardly pay attention to their marked assignments
D.they decide on the best way of practicing the correct form
60.Which of the following might be the most important to work through your mistakes?
A.Keeping the right form in mind and using it later.
B.Writing out the sentence once more.
C.Learning your mistakes by heart.
D.Correcting your mistakes and writing down the teacher’s words.
