题型:不详难度:来源:
“Hi,howareya.” some people say when they see a familiar face. The words run together into a mass, all sense and meaning lost. All the same, people do care how you are. After they greet you,it’s likely you will greet them back, with an equally meaningless phrase like,“Can’t complain, can’t complain.”You could probably complain,at length,or share a brilliant thought you were just beginning when a greeting interrupted you.You don’t though, you say,“Great, you?”
You are not giving each other information about your health and wellbeing. All the same, you are sharing information. You’re acknowledging each other’s positions as acknowledged friends,or at least as accepted acquaintances. And you are reestablishing the ties that may have lapsed(衰退) since yesterday, when you last met at the elevator or the entrance to the train station.
It’s what anthropologist(人类学家) Bronislaw Malinoski called a phatic(交流感情的) communication. Its message is not in the words you use,but in the fact that you speak ritually(仪式上地) accepted words. In Asia, for example, people may ask one another if they have eaten,or if they are busy. They’re not really asking for their lunch menu or their agenda, they are saying hello.A phatic signal merely says, “I see you there.” It says hi.
There’s embarrassment of being near people without acknowledging them. That uncomfortable feeling is one reason why lonely passengers in the subway may behave as if they cannot see anyone around them or may escape their uncomfortable situation with a book. Some people read all the way home, and never turn a page.
Your friend isn’t asking how you are,and you aren’t telling him. However,he is recognizing your existence, and when you answer, you are recognizing his.In addition, the set speech you have shared opens the door to closer communications if both agree.Someday, you may come to real close friendship, and really tell one another how you are.
Meanwhile, people who greet one another this way do care. They care enough to recognize someone’s essential humanity(人性).They send a signal across the space between,to share, very briefly and lightly,in awareness of one another.
Your greetings prove that neither of you has become a social outcast. How are you?You are still a member of society in good status. You are still the one who knows the rituals and secret passwords necessary to get to work each day.

People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss.In the English language, there are many expressions using the word “mouth”.
For example,if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest(抗议) and say “Do not bad mouth me.” Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret because it hurts that person.Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say,“I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” If this should happen, the speaker might feel down in the mouth. In other words,he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.
Another situation is when someone falsely claims another person said something. The other person might protest,“I did not say that.Do not put words in my mouth.”
Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person,“was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.” This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives from hand to mouth. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.
Parents might sometimes keep a child off sweet food as a form of punishment for saying bad things. For example,if a child says things she should not say to her parents, she might be described as a mouthy child. The parents might even tell the child to stop mouthing off.
But enough of all this talk.I have been running my mouth long enough.

Make some noise on May 7 for Music Monday.People in the U.S. and Canada will be celebrating the day by singing and playing musical instruments together.
Music Monday is the first day of National Wanna Play Music Week, which runs from May 7 to 13.The National Association of Music Merchants(NAMM) organizes the weeklong celebration every year. This marks the seventh year the organization is teaming up with Canada’s Coalition for Music Education(CME),the group that started Music Monday.
“It’s a day to fill the skies with music and bring young people together in song,” CME Executive Director Holly Nimmons said.
The CME started Music Monday in 2005.It is held every year on the first Monday of May.It was created to help people realize the importance of music education programs in schools and in communities. The day also celebrates the benefits of playing music for people of all ages.
NAMM researches the effects of music on children. They found that playing music has positive effects on thinking skills and on confidence. It also teaches selfdiscipline(自律) and helps kids bond with their peers(同龄人).“Learning musical skills can also help in your studies of other subjects, such as math, reading and language,” Lora Bodmer, who works at NAMM,said.
Their studies show that music can also help people form friendships and connect with different groups.Nimmons says anyone can join in on the day,not just those who are musically gifted.“I think that we all have the music in us,and it’s a matter of confidence,” she said.“Sing with other people or beat drums, just enjoy the music.”
Participants can turn on the radio to join the fun. Each year a song is assigned to Music Monday. This year the song is “Tomorrow Is Coming” by Luke Doucet. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(CBC) will be playing the tune at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.People across North America will play or sing the song at the exact same time. The performance is meant to connect people through melody(旋律).More than 700,000 students took part in the concert last year.
Schools, afterschool programs, organizations, groups and individuals throughout the U.S. and Canada can all participate in Music Monday.Students who would like to share in the celebration should let their teachers or organization leaders know. But NAMM also encourages people to pick up any instrument and play anytime on the day.

As you can see, water works hard in your body every day. That’s why it’s important  to give your body the water it needs to carry out all its different jobs.On a regular day, your body loses 2 to 3 quarts of water—enough to fill a 2liter soda bottle. You probably guess that water is lost when you sweat—especially   on a hot day.
But your body also loses water in an almost invisible way—evaporation (蒸发).Water escapes from your body through your skin and in your breath. How?Your breath contains droplets (小滴) of water that are usually too tiny to see. They become visible for a quick second in the cold when you can “see your breath”.But water evaporates this way all year round.Your skin also contains water, which escapes in tiny droplets that go into  the air.The water in your skin evaporates into the air,but fortunately, your body can replace the water it loses so your skin doesn’t dry out.
Eating and drinking is one way to replace the water your body loses. Most foods have a lot of water in them, especially fruits and vegetables.Grapes, watermelons, oranges, and cantaloupes are delicious and full of water.
But you can’t rely_on food alone to get that water back, and that’s why it’s also a good idea to drink water  every day.You might have heard someone say that people need to drink 6 to 8 cups (1.4 to 1.9 liters) of water each day.Depending on how much  water you’re getting from foods and other liquids,6 to 8 cups might not be necessary. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables,or you like to eat soup every day, you’ll get some of the water your body needs.
