December, a single event killed more than 2000 people in the Philippines. Sending workers to stabilize (加固)
mountainsides using steel bars (钢筋) can help a lot, but it introduces new difficulties because of dust and
loosen heavy, dangerous debris (岩屑) from the work. "It"s a quite dangerous job," says Giorgio Pezzuto of
D" Appolonia, working with eight other companies. Now there may be an answer: a three-ton robot called
Roboclimber.
"The idea is to operate a machine far away that can do the stabilizing job without a human being near,"
says Pezzuto, manager for the project, which is supported by a European organization. Engineers say that
the machine will be faster and cheaper than manual labor (人工). The robot, a large radio-controlled four-
legged spider, has cost at least $2 million so far. It should be able to climb mountainsides, drill (钻) holes
and insert (插入) steel bars there. Testing should begin in May.
B. debris
C. dust
D. landslide
B. to tell people that sending workers to stabilize mountainsides is a dangerous job
C. to show people how to use a new robot
D. to introduce a new robot that can be used to stabilize mountainsides
B. spider
C. steel bar
D. a drill
B. it can climb mountainsides, drill holes and insert steel bars there
C. it can do the stabilizing job without human beings near

examinations of more than 386,000 Dutchmen. Researchers found that the brightest subjects came from the
smallest families and had few, if any, brothers and sisters when they were born. Thus the firstborn child in
a family of two was usually brighter than the last child in a family.
The effects of family size on intelligence (智力) may be explained by what a house full of children does
to the home environment. It increases the amount of time a child spends with other children and decreases
the amount of parental attention he or she receives. For example, a parent with one restless child is likely to
sit and play with the child. The same parent with two or three restless children is more likely to ask them to
play with each other. Some psychologists say that when a child interacts (交往) with an adult alone, the child
learns more and therefore intelligence is increased. Researchers have also found that parents often expect more
from their first-born, which motivates (激发) such children to seek a higher standard.
Not all psychologists agree that firstborns tend to be more intelligent. They say that the data need to be
examined more closely for other possible explanations. For example, in industrialized nations most large
families come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Thus environment, not family size or birth order,
may be influencing intelligence. On the other hand, there may be genetic variations (基因突变) within families
that also explain the cause of differences.
If firstborns have advantages in the area of intelligence, research has also shown that they may be more
conforming (墨守陈规) and have poorer social skills than their younger siblings (brothers and/or sisters).
Although more research needs to be done in this area, it is clear that such factors as birth order, the order in
which boys and girls are born into a family, the number of years that separate siblings probably have an effect
on the development of intelligence, personality, and social relationships.

A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet website called a "blog". The word "blog" is a short way
of saying "web log", or "personal website". Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they
like.
There are millions of blogs on the internet today. They provide news information and ideas to the people
who read them. They contain links to other websites, and they provide a place for people to write their ideas
and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 web logs. It says that blogs are most
popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study
also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the
Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And
American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed
his free blog service "weblogs. com". He said the site became too costly to continue. he started the blog four
years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the
site was closed.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca"s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999.
She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called The Weblog Handbook. It
has been translated into four languages so far.
Miss Blood says Rebecca"s Pocket gets about thirty thousand visitors a month. She writes about anything
and everything-politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how
to prevent being stolen from online bank accounts.

D. tell readers how to write blogs

jumping funnel (漏斗) passes over a house, the walls and ceiling burst apart as if a bomb had gone off inside.
This explosion (爆炸) is caused by the low air pressure at the center of a tornado.
The pressure at the center of a tornado is usually 13 pounds per square inch. However, inside the house
the air pressure is normal, about 15 pounds per square inch. The difference of 2 pounds per square inch
between the inside and outside pressure may not seem like much. But suppose a tornado funnel passes over
a small building that measures 20 by 10 by 10 feet. On each square inch of the building, there is 2 pounds of
pressure from the inside that is not balanced by air pressure outside the building. On the ceiling, that adds up
to an unbalanced pressure of 57,600 pounds. The pressure on the four walls adds up to 172,800 pounds.
If windows are open in the building, some of the inside air will rush out through them. This will balance
the pressure inside and outside the building. But if the windows are shut tightly, the great inside pressure may
cause the building to burst.
Unfortunately, heavy rain happens in thunderstorms that later produce tornadoes. So, people often shut all
windows to protect their property. This may cause far worse damage later.
B. When tornadoes usually occur.
C. How tornadoes can be prevented.
D. Why tornadoes cause so much damage.
B. air pressure at the center of a tornado is over 172,000 pounds
C. weight of a tornado can crush a building"s roof when it passes overhead
D. air pressure inside a tornado is less than the air pressure inside a building
B. opening the windows
C. using an electric fan
D. making the roof and walls stronger
will be graduating from high school, the commitment (承诺) you made to complete your schooling has been
fulfilled. Another few years in some college classroom just doesn"t sound too attractive; so what are your
choices? Let"s see, Choice 1-You can live with your parents, leech on to them, and basically do nothing. Or
Choice 2-You could get yourself a job. Of course, there are other choices, but for this little discussion, we"ll
just suppose that they aren"t relevant.
Okay, so Choice 2 is obviously going to be more productive. You"re finally into the workplace and will be
entering the real world. What would be a good place to start? Well, hopefully high school helped to give you
some sort of an idea of what type of job you would like to enter. If not, then it would be a good idea to speak
with an advisor or a person working in the field you may be interested in before you jump into a job that you
won"t like. Gaining knowledge on a particular line of work beforehand can be very effective by helping you in
your search to find that job that you will enjoy doing. Another reason to research jobs and get some hands on
work is related to the fact that it will also be helpful in buffing up your resume and providing you with some
valued experience. Internships (见习) or volunteering are usually a good place to start.
If you are ready to begin a job after high school, the main benefits will clearly be saving money from high
college expense and happily making a living in your chosen jobs. From another point of view, jumping into the
workplace is sometimes the only way to see for yourself if you are ready to work a 40-hour week yet. If you
decide that full time work is not what you are ready for, then this may suggest that you should go back to
school and get a degree. Besides, a college degree will usually equal higher wages.
B. depend on
C. quarrel with
D. take care of
B. Where Should I Start
C. The Advantage of Starting Work Earlier
D. Jumping into Work after High School
B. making sure if you are really ready to work
C. getting higher wages
D. getting to know if you should go back to school
B. Experience in work.
C. Advice from teachers and parents.
D. Internships and volunteering.
B. college graduates
C. high school graduates
D. graduating high school students
