A scientist who developed a way to calculate(计算) how much water is used in the produciton of anything form a cup of coffee to a hamburger was awarded the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize.
Professor John Anthony Allan of the University of London in Britain won the award for introducing the idea of "virtual water(虚拟水)",a calculation method that has changed the nature of trade policy and research.
Allan has written seven books and published more than 100 papers.

According to Gutierrez, this shadow economy exists because the excuse of recycling and reusing electronics gives businessmen “a green passport” to ship waste around the globe. “Developing nations must take upon some of the responsibility themselves,” Gutierrez said. But, he added, “A greater portion of this responsibility should fall on the exporting state.”
China, for example, has become a dumping(倾倒,堆放) place for large amounts of e-waste. The nation is beginning to take action to stop the flow of dangerous materials across its borders. The Chinese government, after many years of denial(否认), is finally beginning to take the lead.

Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word cold. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.

A technique that controls immediate gas explosions by spraying them with large droplets of water is being tested by scientists at the University of Wales, United Kingdom.Instead of using the traditional fine water sprays when a gas leak is detected, the researchers have discovered that large droplets help to draw in some of the force of any explosion and provide a better way of controlling fire.
The research is based on studies made of the Piper Alpha oil rig (油井) explosion that occurred in the North Sea nine years ago killing 167 workers.The Welsh team found that by covering the gas-leak area with water droplets, the explosion and its effect can be greatly reduced.
Dr Gerand Thomas, a good lecturer in physics at the university’s Center for Explosion Studies, said that it was impossible to deal with gas explosions in the same way as fires because the whole event may only last a quarter of a second and normal water sprays do not have time to be effective.
Using the droplets of water to hold explosions resulted in the water being turned into a mist that allows some force of the explosion to be reduced.The mist slows down the combustion (燃烧) process and can stop a large amount of the gas igniting (点火,燃烧), thus greatly reducing damage by limiting pressure development.With such a system, the operator has to decide at what point after a gas leak to activate the sprays.
