Because of my curiosity (好奇心), I had a really exciting weekend. I took a trip to Gloucester to see
some of the world"s most beautiful animals-whales in the North Atlantic Ocean. After a long trip by train
and bus, we got on the ship called the "Privateer". On our way to see the whales on that beautiful sunny
day, I grew more and more excited.
After a while we stopped, and everyone on the ship started to shout because we"d seen whales. It was
wonderful!
While we were watching the whales, a guide was giving us information about them. She told us we
were seeing only two kinds of whales-50-foot whales (singing whales) and 70-foot whales (the second
largest whales on the earth). She also said we could easily tell the different kinds of whales by their tales
(尾巴), since every whale has a different tail, just as people have different fingerprints (指纹).
They all have names as well. On this trip, we saw "Salt" and "Pepper", two whales named by a scientist
and a fisherman. They swam together all the time. Sometimes whales came so close to the ship that we
thought we could touch them.
I took twenty-seven photos, which was a really hard job because they moved so quickly, and stayed
on the surface of the ocean for such a short time. Having seen the whales was one of the chances few
people ever got. I was lucky enough to have that chance.
1. The passage is mainly about _____.
[     ]
A. the different kinds of whales
B. the different kinds of animals in the ocean

[     ]
A. The train.
B. The plane.
C. The bus.
D. The ship.
3. We can learn from the third paragraph that _____.
[     ]
A. there were only two kinds of whales
B. 70-foot whales are the largest in the world
C. whales all have different tails
D. whales have fingerprints as people do
4. What did the author do when she saw the whales?
[     ]
A. She gave them the names "Salt" and "Pepper".
B. She swam with them.
C. She got close to touch them
D. She took photos of them.

She was returning from teaching out in a small community (社区). It was a black, moonless night, and
a heavy snow was falling.
She thought back to the time when she had first started teaching out in small communities. During those
days she had always picked up hitchhikers (搭便车者), until the day her sister told her that one of her friends
had been shot (中枪) in the head by a hitchhiker, all because she had stopped out of kindness to help him
during a storm.
Her family didn"t stop worrying about her safety over the hitchhikers until the family heard the promise:"
No more hitchhikers!" The snow that night was making her think back to this.
Then she saw a man waving. She slowed down for him, but as he ran toward the car in the dark, she
shook with fear. Yet she thought that if he was truly in need, she couldn"t leave him here in this storm.
The stranger explained that his car was dead, and she told him to get in. They drove for an hour into the
next city and she took him to a telephone booth (公用电话亭). She waited until he had made a call. When he
reported back to her that a family member would soon come to pick him up, she wished him well and then left.
Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. It felt as though she had been holding her breath for an hour.
"I hope they"ll understand why I had to break my promise," she thought.

It was Monday. Mrs. Smith"s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house.
Considering that there was no better way, Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following
words on it "Give my dog half a pound of meat." Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, "Take
this to the butcher, and he"s going to give you your lunch today."
Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher"s. It gave the paper to the butcher. The
butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady"s handwriting and soon did it as he was asked
to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up at once.

gave it half a pound of meat once more.

Once an Englishman named Jack Brown went to Russia for a holiday. He stayed there for several months
and then came home again. Some of his friends visited him a few days after he got back. "I had a very
dangerous trip while I was in Russia," Jack said to them. "I wanted to see a friend of mine in the country and
the bad weather made me very late. So I was still traveling through a forest in a sleigh (雪橇) when the sun
went down. It was a long way from my friend"s house when about twenty wolves began to follow my sleigh.
It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses
for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves. The noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were
frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, gray forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were
near us. They were running very fast, and they didn"t seem to get tired like the horses."
"What did you do?" one of Jack"s friends asked.
"When the wolves got very near," Jack answered, "I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh
was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh
got away from them for a few minutes."
"Then they finish their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow
now, and after a few minutes I saw them running among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and
then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it."
"The same thing happened again and again, and my horses became more and more tired and ran slower
and slower until, after about two hours, only one wolf was still alive and following us."
"Wasn"t it too fat to run?" one of his friends asked.
