I think health is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give is
spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better health care.
                                                                             -----Robin, aged 16, Birmingham
I think the most important thing is to improve the education of the African countries.
There is an old saying,"If you give a man a fish, you"ll feed him for a day. If you teach him
how to fish, you"ll feed him for a lifetime." We need to help people to help themselves, not
just throw money at the problem when it appears.
                                                                             -----Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool
People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster (灾难) like the earthquake. It"s good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should
give a small part of their salary (工资) to charity. If everyone did that, it would make a big
difference.
                                                                      -----Mary, aged 14, Stratford-on-Avon

How hard we have all prayed (祈祷) to grow up quickly, and looked forward to the happy days of being
a grown-up and enjoying the many interests that a youth should have.
At last, you have grown up. At least you are no longer a child. They call you "young lady". You then enjoy
the pleasure of being a young lady. You are proud of being a grown-up teenager. People welcome you-this
young lady-heartily. You are glad that your prayer has been answered.
But there is always something that troubles you a lot. You say, "Papa and Mama, give me some money
please. My pocket money is all gone already."
"No", they say, "Your age is a dangerous age. If you have too much money to spend, it won"t do you
any good." Then you have to stay at home because you dare not go out with an empty pocket.
Another time you tell your grandma, "Grandma, see, I am a grown-up now."
"Good, now, you can sit here and knit (编织) this for me while I go and have a rest." To show that you
are no more a child, you have to sit there the whole afternoon doing the work, which only a grown-up can
do. After an hour, you find it hard to do, and give the knitting basket back to your grandma. Your grandma
criticizes your work. You hear what she says, "Such a big girl can"t do such easy work." You wish then you
were a child again.
But the fact is, you are growing up, and you can"t help it. That"s the way it goes!

As we know, there are differences between western culture and Chinese culture. We can see differences
when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let"s look at the words about animals and plants. Most
expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, "a homeless dog","a mad dog","a running dog" and "a dog
catching a mouse", have negative* meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and
good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive* actions. For example,"you are
a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. And "every dog has its day" means each person has good luck
sometimes. To describe a person"s serious illness, they say"sick as a dog". The word "dog-tired" means very
tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture,"cat" is often used to describe a woman
who is cruel*.
The rose is regarded as a symbol* of love in both China and some western countries. People think the rose
means love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many
other countries.
The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can
learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict (有瘾的
人)" he jokes."I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled (皱的)." Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and a sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears a
necktie. "I am working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable." More and more
companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes. In the United States, the change from
formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees
to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" or "casual
Friday"."What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday
thing," said a business consultant (顾问) Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is
that it"s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code.""A lot of young people
don"t want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it"s hard to hire people if you
have a conservative (保守的) dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive
when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss Company, 85 percent of
employers believe that casual dress has a negative influence on morale (士气). Only 4 percent of employers
hold the opinion that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear
also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one
every day," one person said. "For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."

A. they make him feel at ease when working
B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes
C. he looks handsome in casual clothes
D. he no longer works for any company

A. Many employees don"t like a conservative dress code.
B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D. All the employers in the U.S. support casual office wear.
4. According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.
B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon (现象) since the early 1990s.

D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to attract people.
5. In this passage, the following strong points of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT ________.
A. saving employees" money
