deer-hunting season, they took their guns and went off into the forest.
One Saturday they were sitting on a stone eating their sandwiches (三明治) and drinking their coffee
when they saw a man walking through the snow towards them. He was dressed in deer-hunting clothes,
but he had no gun with him. When he got nearer, the two friends saw that he was following a deer"s foot
prints. They were both very surprised to see a man following a deer without a gun. So when he reached
them, they stopped him and asked him whether any thing was wrong and whether they could help him.
The man sat down beside them, accepted a cup of coffee and told them his story.
Like them, he had gone out deer-hunting that morning with a friend. They had seen a deer with very
big horns (角), and had followed it for some time. Then he had fired at it, and it had fallen just where it
stood. He and his friend had run over to examine it, and he had said to his friend "This deer"s horns will
make a wonderful rack (架子) for my guns when I get it home." He had then put his gun in the deer"s
horns and stepped back to see exactly how they would look as a gun rack on the wall of his study. He
had been admiring the effect when the deer had suddenly jumped up, shaken itself and ran away, carrying
his gun firmly stuck in its horns.

Now 20, third-year Cambridge University student, Peter Blackburn is managing director of a
company with a £30000 plan. And he thinks it will make more than 15000 by next summer.
He set up Peter Backborn Ltd last year to bring out a new, colour term-planner that now
students all over the UK are using.
"I felt that most of the planners going around were pretty unimaginative, " he says "I believed
that I could do a better job and decided to have a go."
Blackburn admits that he is putting far more effort into business than his computer studies
course at university. While fellow students are out with their friends, he keeps in touch with his
business office in Lancashire by movable phone. Before he set up the company he spent one
holiday preparing a plan that would persuade his bank to lend him money.
"Most students work hard for a good degree because they believe that will help them get
a job to support themselves," he says "I work hard at my company because that is what will
support me next year, after I leave college."
Friends believe that Blcakburn will make £1 million within 5 years.
He is not quite so sure, however, "There"s a lot to be done yet," he says.

I"m the mid-field player on my team. But in fact that"s not (1) now. I was the mid-field player because, as I
said, this was my (2) game. That"s a good way to end a high school football career (生涯), especially if you
win, but even though you don"t, it"s (3) to leave at a high point.
I was eight when I first started playing football. My dad (4) football, and he used to practise with me at
home — passing, catching, running. We used to practise almost every evening (5) it got too dark. He tried to
teach everything he knew about the (6). "Just remember: don"t ever (7)." "Stay in the game. Don"t lose your
concentration (专注).""Go out there and give 110 percent(百分之……)every time." Well, that was a long time
ago, but I still hear his words (8) in my ears.
I had a lot on my mind (9) the game today. I don"t like things to end, I guess, and this was the last game.
I was talking to myself and warning myself about what to do and not to do. I didn"t sleep at all (10), and when
the sun came up this morning, I reached the point where (11) just wanted it all to be over, finished, done. But
then when the game started, my mind became (12). I just lived in this game, this moment. I didn"t hear the
crowd, I didn"t feel the cold or the pain, I never felt tired. I just kept my eyes on the (13), and it was just me
and the ball and, inside, a soft, white light (14) me the way to, and it was a beautiful, empty feeling.
It"s all over now, and it"s really getting cold here. It"s starting to snow. The sun"s almost gone, and I can
(15) see the goal. Now it"s dark and I"m sitting here all alone. Well, I guess it"s time to say good-bye and move
on.
mine. There was a woman who lived there and whom I had never met, yet I could see her sitting by her
window each afternoon, sewing (缝纫) and reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was
unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, "Why doesn"t that woman clean her window?
It really looks terrible."
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including cleaning the window.
Late in the afternoon after I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for
a rest. What a surprise! The woman sitting by her window was clearly seen. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching
hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through
the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings (缺点)?
From then on, whenever I want to judge someone, I ask myself first, "Am I looking at him through
my own dirty window?" Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I can see others" world
more clearly.
B.his window was dirty
C.the woman lived far away
D.he was near-sighted (近视的)
