I was born in the Tronto, Canada. Life looked bright and was filled with hope for my parents and me. My father and mother were married in 1980, and I was born next year.
As I grew into a man, I often looked to my father for advice and support. There were many things about his character that I admired, but like any young boy, I often thought that my father’s ideas were from the past and out of date.
I did well as a student and was the first person in my family to graduate from university. I went on to be a university professor and writer, and most people would say that I have had a very successful life. But I know much of my success is because of the lessons that he passed onto me.
On Father’s Day, I will look in the mirror and smile. My dad gave me many gifts, including my now bald head (秃顶), and the friendly smile that my friends say I have.
Thank you again, dad. I miss you. Happy Father’s Day.

I think the most terrible thing in life for my little brother is getting up in the morning. He is almost sick when my mother calls, “Herbert! It’s seven o’clock! Get up!”
Herbert answers, “I’m coming!” and goes right back to sleep. I’m not at all like my brother. I don’t like to go to bed at night but I don’t mind getting up in the morning.
I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump out of bed and go into the bothroom to take a shower . I great dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get ready to go down stairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls.
But not Herbert. He just sleeps. A military band (军乐队)in our bedroom could not wake him up . I call him and say, “Get up!” Mum will be up here to pull you out of bed if you don’t get up quickly.
But he just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of bed. It’s that way every day with my little brother. Perhaps some day he’ll learn to get up on time, but I really don’t think so.

I didn’t think I had a passion(激情). I would sit in front of the TV all day, thinking about nothing but the next show. It was not long ago that I first learned how important having a passion is to life.
That day I went with my mum to drive my sister to the gym. I was bored. Then, as my mum stopped at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my eye(吸引我的世界). It was a man dressed in rags (衣衫褴褛). He was homeless. That didn’t interest me, for I had seen many like him before.
But in some ways he was different. This man was not sitting down with a sad expression(表情). He had a radio in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious(珍贵)thing he had.
“Mum, why does that man have a radio even thought(尽管) he’s homeless?” I asked.
“He bought it,” she replied. I was still unable to understand.
“But if he’s homeless, why doesn’t he use the money to buy food or clothes? He wasted it on something he doesn’t need.”
“Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren’t the most important things. We need happiness, too.”
The man must care too much about music to buy a radio instead of food clothes. I soon realized(意识到)that happiness is the key to life. Without it, there’s nothing to look forward to.
Since then I’ve never gone a day without thinking of what’s truly important. A home, a meal, clothes—these things are only part of the picture. What’s often forgotten is that we all need a pleasure, a light in a dark day. We all need a passion.

A.She thought all day without doing anything.
B.She bought a radio just like the man’s.
