of day. This is so __1__ that there seems to be no need to ask the reason for it. Yet no one __2__
understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. The process is not as __3__
as we might think,as recent experiments have shown. In one study, flowers were kept in constant
__4__. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not
open as they __5_ do. As a matter of fact, they __6__ to open at their usual time. This suggests
that they have some mysterious(神秘的) way of knowing the __7__. Their sense of time does not
__8__information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of "inner clock".
This __9__ may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants
but also __10__ , including man, have this "inner clock" which __11__ the working of their bodies
and influences their activities. Men, then, are also influenced by this mysterious __12__. Whether
we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food.
In the past, this did not really __13__ because people lived in natural condition. In the __14__
world, things are different; now there are spacemen, airplane pilots and, in ordinary life, a lot of
people who have to work at night. It would be very __15_ , then, to know more about the "inner
clock". Such things as flowers might help us understand more about ourselves.

wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises
from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon
their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of
conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy
all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things.
Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society,
offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded
in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being
disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The
habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests
and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on
deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats
them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper
and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune,
nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they
bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize
their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without
worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any
contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when
one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
B. usually are affected by the results of certain things
C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
2. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 "sour the pleasure of society" most probably means "_ _"
B. make others unhappy
C. tend to scold others openly
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people cannot understand happy persons
4. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should _ _.
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
B. laughs at the unhappy people
C. suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness
D. tells people how to be happy in life
quietly and go by without 1 (notice). Therefore, it is 2 (advise) that you should value and
treat them with care. 3 an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it 4
its own. If you want to achieve something _ 5 intend to fulfill one of your ambitious, you must
work hard, make efforts and get prepared, 6 , you will take no advantage of opportunities
when they come to visit you. The difference between a man who succeeds and 7 who
does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always 8 (make)
adequate preparations to meet opportunity- ties as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on
the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of
opportunities for 9 in our society, but only those 10 are prepared adequately and qualified
highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose.
Maurice Sendak"s children"s book, Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963, has become
very successful throughout the years and was made into a movie earlier this year.
The book"s main character is a boy named Max who gets into trouble with his mother and is sent
to bed without any supper. Before long, Max"s room magically becomes a forest, and he sails away to
a land where monsters live. Max isn"t scared, though, and becomes king of the wild things, but after a
while, he begins feeling homesick. Max sails back home and his supper is still hot when he arrives in
his bedroom.
Many teachers and professors like this story and use it to help children develop creativity and
imagination. Melina Davis, an education professor, said she likes how the book contains a couple
of pages that have only pictures on them. "This allows children to shape the story themselves," she
said.
The book contains a few of larger words that some parents worry may confuse children, but
experts say those words help improve children"s reading skills and challenge them.
Davis said the book is well written which helps kids get involved in the story. "The book talks
about what all children go through, like "I was naughty but my mommy still loves me"," Davis said.
The book also encourages children to face their fears. "I think it"s really good to show that Max
makes friends with the monsters," Davis said. "Kids can find out monsters aren"t always the thing
under the bed that"s going to scare them. I think this is good because it shows that the children can
go to scary places but still have a positive experience."
Since the book has been successful throughout the years, a movie was recently made and many
people are excited to see it. Davis said she thinks the movie will be wonderful but it might be a little
scary for younger children. "You don"t want bad dreams over a book that"s extremely wonderful,"
Davis said.

B. Max was sent to the forest as punishment.
C. It is suitable for people of all ages.
D. It is the most popular children"s book ever published.
4. What does Davis think of the movie?
B. She encourages children to see it to fight against their fear.
C. She worries that it might be too frightening for some children.
D. She believes it will be a better choice for children than the book.
5.What"s the author"s purpose in writing the passage?
B. To comment on a famous children"s book.
C. To encourage children to read scary stories.
D. To introduce a movie based on a children"s book.

early. You say you want to see that new film while they say you can"t see it. You say you"ve met
some nice kids and you"d like to go out with them, but they say they"d like to see your friends first.
When you"re a teenager, it seems that every time you say "I want to", they will certainly answer "No,
you can"t." Also, no part of your life is safe from the "prying eyes" of your parents. 15-year-old Debbie
says, "My dad always wants to know where I am, what time I"m going to be home. Most parents do
that. Do they have to know everything? 1 "
2 When something goes wrong, most parents just don"t believe in their children. Without asking
why, they think their kids are wrong. And not many parents would allow their kids to choose for
themselves.
3 But remember that not too long ago you were really a child. Your parents still remember
the childish mistakes you used to make. They want to protect you though you do not want them to
do so. And when something seems to threaten your well-being, they worry.
So, if you want to get more freedom, please try to understand your parents and do not just lie.
4 If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don"t just say, "All the other kids can stay out late.
" Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do and where you"ll be and why it"s important
for you to stay out later ..., they might just say yes.
B. No one likes being troubled.
C. They should give us more freedom.
D. Try a more friendly way.
E. Young people further complain that their parents do not respect them.
