When I was in junior high school, I was really a bad boy. My history teacher — Mr Oven criticized me a lot because I was naughty in his class. By the end of the first semester, I’d had enough of his words and had decided that I would get my revenge on him.
The opportunity arose one morning when Mr. Oven was called to the office for a certain reason. While Mr. Oven left, my company Billy and I grabbed Mr. Oven’s lunch bag from under his desk. I opened his sandwich and placed a bug in between the two slices of bread. We put it back and closed it. To keep it in memory, Billy took photos of the whole process. We laughed for weeks over this.
Well, it all went south during Thanksgiving break. Billy’s Mother found the pictures in his room, and demanded that he should tell her where these pictures were from. Billy told his mother the whole story, and Mr. Oven was informed. Not only was I punished from school for two weeks, but also I was kicked off the football and basketball team. Before I could return to school, I had to turn in a 1000-word essay on what I did and why I did that. We come by business naturally in our family. Each of the seven children in our family worked in our father’s store. 21 we worked and watched, we learned that work was about more than 22 and making a sale.
One lesson stands out in my 23 . It was shortly before Christmas. I was in eighth grade and was working evenings, straightening the toy section. A little boy, five or six years old, came in. He was 24 a brown torn coat with dirty sleeves. His shoes were scuffed and his one shoelace was torn. The little boy looked poor to me ---too poor to 25 to buy anything. He looked 26 the toy section, picked up this item and 27 , and carefully put them 28 in their place.
Dad came down the stairs and walked over to the boy. His blue eyes 29 and the dimple(酒窝) in his cheek stood out as he asked the boy what he could do for him. The boy said he was looking for a Christmas 30 to buy his brother. I was impressed that Dad treated him with the same respect as any adult. Dad told him to take his 31 and look around. He did.
After about 20 minutes, the little boy carefully picked up a toy 32 , walked up to my dad and said, “How much for this, Mister?”

The little boy held out his hand and 33 it. His hand was creased(起皱) with 34 lines of dirt from holding his 35 too tightly. In his hand 36 two dimes, a nickel and two pennies—27 cents. The price on the toy plane he’d picked out was $3.98.
“That’ll just 37 it,” Dad said as he 38 the sale. Dad’s reply still 39 in my ears. When the little boy walked out of the store, I didn’t notice the dirty, worn coat or the single torn shoelace. What I saw was a happy child with a 40 .

Do you have any of these bad habits ? Check yourself by answering “yes”or“no” to these questions.
a) Do you move your lips when reading silently ?
b) Do you point to words with your fingers as you read ?
c) Do you move your head from side to side as you read ?
d) Do you read one word at a time ?
If your answer “yes” to any of these questions , start at once to break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then when your lips move, you will know it and stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin in one hand, and hold your head still.
If you read no more than one word at a time, you need to work in learning to take in more words at each glance as your eyes travel across the lines of words. Even if you read fairly fast now, you can learn to even faster. As you probably have been told, the secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in several groups and force your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will be able to read faster.

59. If you can read fairly fast now, __________.

C. you can learn to read even faster
D. you can enjoy reading
