“Family” is of course an elastic word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of “family” in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions (观念) of male superiority are hard to maintain.
The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. I shall never forget the night, a few years ago, when Marion J. Douglas was a student in one of my calsses. (I have not used his real name for personal reasons. As he requested.) But here is his real story as he told it before one of our adult – education classes. He told us how tragedy had struck at his home, not once, but twice. The first time he had lost his five-old daughter, a child he adored.
