I’ve been selling since I was twenty. I went to college for a year, but I was bored. I just wasn’t the kind of person who could sit in a room with books and study. I wanted to get out and work. My friends thought I was silly. They were all studying to be engineers, lawyers, and doctors. I was the odd one. That caused me a lot of anxiety later on. I always felt that I had to prove myself. I had to prove that I was just as good as they were.
I tried for a sales position in a company that sold office furniture. My interview went pretty well, and I got the job. It was a good learning experience for me. I learned how to sell. I found out what to say and how to say it, I also found out that selling wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do.
There’s a lot of pressure and anxiety in this kind of work. Everything depends on the sale – your job, money and happiness. You can’t do anything that might make you lose the sale. There are times when you want to call the client, and you know you can’t. you have to wait for the client to call you.
Sometimes I feel like an actor. Whenever I call a client from home, my wife goes into another room. She says that I sound like a different person. In a way she’s right. Selling is like performing . If you’ve performed well, you’ve sold yourself to the audience. In my work, if you’ve performed well, you’ve sold the product. That’s what selling is all about.

A.it’s very easy to lose a sale
B.your whole life depends on the sale
C.it’s hard to decide when to call a client

54.Why does the author’s wife go into another room when he calls a client from home?

第一节:阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
On a visit to my home state, I had a chance to drive through Cazenovia, a village on the shores of Lake Cazenovia. It seemed to me as if in a dream. I saw again the lakeshore meadow(草地)that has always remained an unforgettable part of my childhood memory. It was the place of family picnics(野炊).
It was Grandma who had made it a rule to have the annual(每年的) outing. She had made known her wish that the family should meet each summer when travel was easier and eat together in the open air. It was her pleasure to have all her children, and their children, gather in the meadow, and spend the day eating, singing, playing, chatting, making jokes.
After so many years, I can still see her in my mind, a large figure, dressed in black although it was summer, seated under the shade of a large tree. The others spread around her, sitting on blankets on the grass. Despite(尽管) the joy, the family picnic was also a time of puzzlement(迷惑) for me. Who was this stranger in black with whom I could not speak?
What I knew of my grandmother, I heard from my mother: she believed in good food on the table. She knew you are what you eat and she loved America for all kinds of foods it provided to people like her, who, back in her home country, had been used to a simple life, with so little food.
We were about fifty kin (家族成员)gathered in that meadow, living proof of the family progress. Grandma’s sons and daughters all offered her services, goods and children. And yet, despite the good times and good food and the happy chatting people, I still felt a sense of strangeness. When I asked my mother why Grandma looked so strange and never spoke to us, I was told that Grandma’s home country was in Europe and she didn’t speak our language. In my eyes, she might as well have been from Mars(火星). I never remember hearing our own mother speak to her mother, although she must have. I only remember my shock at mother’s sadness when Grandma died. Was she crying for the silence that had existed like a wall between them?......

At that point, one of the male crew members pointed out, almost to himself but loud nough for my benefit, “It should be the better parent who stays home.” A lot of guys say hings like that. Usually it’s a code for “My wife, or any woman is the better parent.”
I was a stay – at – home father for 8 years, so his words made me excited. It implied that our family’s choice could only have been correct if I was a “better” parent than my wife.
I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the “better” parent if she spent more time with Jack. She would be able to read him wetter and calm him more quickly. But as the more employable one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.
because of the increased time I spent with Jack. I soon knew him well, understood that he needed and could look after him more or less as well as my wife could. Actually, he experience helped me unlock one of the world’s great secrets; Women are good at booking after children because they do it. It is not because of any innate (先天的) female talent. It is because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.
Woman obviously get a biological head starting from giving birth and nursing, but ever the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself. I was people are able to look after them as well besides their moms.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
When I walked into the house after school, the first thing I noticed was a box with items I recognized from my dad’s office.
“What are you doing home already?” I asked casually.
“Andrew, I was laid off today,” he answered, quietly.
I was sure he was joking. “No, you weren’t. Why are you really home?”
Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker and prided himself on his career. Providing for our family has been his joy, and I guess I had taken his work for granted.
My father’s unemployment created many changes in our lives. For starters, he was home all the time, which meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school. I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs. I began to notice how down he seemed, and how losing his job had affected his self-esteem, though he tried to be optimistic. For the first time, I saw my dad as vulnerable. He asked my brother and me to spend less. I gave up my allowance, which even though it wasn’t much, felt like the right thing to do. I also found a part-time job.
After several difficult months of searching, my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business. Day by day, I watched him build it, and I admired how much time and energy he expended.
One evening I asked if he needed help.
“Only if it doesn’t interfere with school,” he said.
I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months. I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action really impacted me. Although this was one of the worst experiences for our family, it taught me a lot about dealing with adversity. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B, ask for help, and take risks. What I have learned from my dad’s understanding of business and his work ethic are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn, and will be my foundations for success.

42. What made the author know the truth?
A. The box from his dad’s office. B. His father’s words.

43. The author’s attitude toward his father’s former job was __________.
A. unconcerned B. sympathetic C. doubtful D. tolerant
44. By saying “Only if it doesn’t interfere with school,” the author’s father seemed ____________.
A. to refuse the author’s advice on the new business
B. to show his discontent with the author’s schoolwork
C. to have said yes to the author’s offer of help
D. to be looking forward to the author’s good behavior at school
