Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its 36 way, but mine couldn"t. I wasn"t sure how I was going to be able to face 37 and their gossip at school. I was forced to 38 my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school 39 completely defeated. All I wanted to do was 40 into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and 41 a pile of cards left by my dad. Each card included a(n) 42 that it was to be opened on a 43 night that week. I made it through that week 44 my father. Each card 45 to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the 46 is impossible to imagine. Don"t try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood 47 when I read, “What you are feeling now is 48 and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing 49 .” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special 50 you face along life’s way, may you 51 that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card 52 the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to 53 . “The world isn"t so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.” My world once collapsed (fell down) but I 54 the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad, who made his 55 known when he couldn"t be present.

in favor of “赞同”, regardless of “不管,不顾”,in search of “寻找”。 destruction“破坏”, competition“竞争”, destination“目的地”。 |

It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which, 11 , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something 12 in the company should ever do. I wish I 13 give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow — 14 it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m 15 , experienced and I know better. 16 I work with some very kind and compassionate (富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to 17 by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar 18 they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “ 19 ” person here. One of the exchanges I had this week was with Lois, the much-honored, much-respected professional who 20 the desk right next to mine. Lois was completely 21 about her work, and to be honest I was a little nervous about how she would 22 to such an extremely embarrassing incident. As I expected, Lois didn’t pass over the 23 when she saw me the next day. She mentioned it directly, 24 with empathetic consideration. She listened to my 25 . Just as I was ready to express my regrets, she brought my self-pity partly to a(n) 26 . “It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to 27 that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s 28 . It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her 29 to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.” I beat myself up for weeks. At such times I need to remember those 30 words: It’s over. It’s done. Let it go. And mostly, move on.

While watching a swimming competition one night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of courage. The event started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. In fact, it is difficult enough, not having anyone to race against. I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong. I’m not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was obvious that the man was not out for gold — his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor. I listened to the crowd beginning to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was exhausted. But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout “Come on, you can do it!” and he did. This young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in swimming history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors. Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to the competition. In a competition, we usually watch the brilliant athletes competing for medals, but it is nice to watch an underdog. 小题1:From the passage we learn that the young man _____.A.made his turn to start back pitifully | B.was skillful at freestyle swimming | C.swam faster than the average swimmer | D.seemed unlikely to win a gold medal | 小题2:The crowd changed their attitude because _____.A.they felt sorry for the young man | B.they wanted to show their interest | C.they were moved by the young man | D.they meant to please the young man | 小题3:According to the passage, “it is nice to watch an underdog” probably means ____.A.it’s amusing to watch a skillful swimmer swimming | B.it’s amazing to watch a good loser challenging himself | C.it’s good for athletes to act proudly | D.it’s difficult for some athletes to remove medals | 小题4:What would be the best title for the passage?A.Go for it! | B.Try again! | C.Compete for gold! | D.Break a record! |

A few weeks after my first wife, Georgia, was called to heaven, I was cooking dinner for my son and myself. For a 36 , I had decided on frozen peas. As I was cutting open the bag, it 37 from my hand and crashed to the floor. The peas, like marbles, 38 everywhere. I tried to use a broom, 39 with each sweep they just rolled across the kitchen. For the next week, every time I was in the 40 , I found a pea---in a corner, or behind a table leg. They kept 41 . Eight months later I pulled out the refrigerator to clean behind it, and 42 12 frozen peas hidden underneath. At the time I found those few remaining 43 , I was in a new relationship with a wonderful 44 I’d met in a support group. After we married, I was reminded 45 those peas under the refrigerator, and realized that my 46 had been like that bag of frozen peas. It had shattered. My wife had died; I was in a new city with a busy job, and with a son having trouble 47 his new surroundings and the 48 of his mother. I was a bag of spilled frozen peas; my life had come apart and scattered. When life gets you 49 , when everything you know comes apart, and when you think you’ll never 50 , remember that it’s just a bag of scattered frozen peas. The peas can be 51 , and life will move on. You’ll find all the peas 52 , including the ones that are hardest to find. And when you’ve got them 53 you’ll start to feel whole again. The life you know can break apart at any time. But you’ll have to 54 , and how fast you collect your peas depends on you. Will you keep scattering them around with a broom, 55 will you pick them up one by one and put your life back together?

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat which was hanging at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were 36 itself up. The coat had beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and a(an) 37 price of $28, which was popular just then with 38 , but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that 39 of classic elegance. John tried it on and the fit was perfect. John 40 the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile "Did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it," he said, 41 folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a 42 came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness and reasoned discussion replaced fierce 43 . He became more mannerly and 44 , eager to please. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him 45 his behavior. When I mentioned this incident to his teacher and 46 what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It 47 be his coat!" Another teacher told him she was giving him a good 48 not only because he had earned 49 but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend “Could this be John?" he asked surprisingly, 50 John"s new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another. John and I both know we should never 51 a person"s clothes for the real person within them. 52 there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for 53 what is on the inside to what is on the outside. For John it is a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to 54 as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape 55 all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.
