September is an exciting month in every college freshman’s life. For many, it’s the first time that they’ve left home to live in a new environment. But after the hustle and bustle of a few weeks, excitement gives way to a less enjoyable emotion— homesickness. Homesickness manifests itself in many ways. You may miss mum’s cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. All this becomes a fond memory of the past. Homesickness can be a bitter feeling for many students, especially when faced with the challenges of settling into an unfamiliar environment. But remember, you’re not alone. According to a recent BBC article, 70 percent of British college students experience homesickness. In this increasingly globalized world in which people migrate to faraway places for a relationship, education or work, homesickness is a feeling shared by many adults. Homesickness can have similar symptoms to depression and in extreme cases it can develop into a panic attack. As for the term, homesickness or nostalgia wasn’t invented until the 17th century. It was considered a disorder by a Swiss physician, who attributed soldiers’ mental and physical discomfort to their longing to return home, “nostos” from Greek, and the accompanying pain, “algos”. Studies in recent years, however, have shown that nostalgia may have some benefits to our mental health. After a decade of surveys and researches, Constantine Sedikides, a US social psychologist, found that nostalgia is what makes us human. He explains that nostalgia can resist loneliness, boredom and anxiety. Therefore, it’s necessary for college students to learn some ways to overcome the uncomfortable feeling. 小题1: From the first two paragraphs, we can infer that __________.A.homesickness means a fond memory of the past | B.only a few students will experience homesickness | C.homesickness is an enjoyable emotion among freshmen | D.college freshmen usually suffer from homesickness after weeks | 小题2:According to the passage, we can know that _________.A.homesickness may cause mental diseases | B.homesickness is a feeling only shared by adults | C.homesickness won’t do any good to our health | D.homesickness is also called nostalgia in Switzerland | 小题3:What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A.some benefits about homesickness | B.other problems in college freshmen’s life | C.how to make campus life more meaningful | D.some tips on how to cope with homesickness | 小题4:The attitude of Sedikides towards homesickness is _________.A.negative | B.supportive | C.skeptical | D.critical | 小题5:What is the best title for the passage?A.Let’s embrace homesickness | B.How to fit into the college life | C.A harmful emotion—homesickness | D.The disadvantages of homesickness |

My son Tom taught me a beautiful lesson today. He is three years old and it is amazing watching him grow up. He called out to me today saying, “Papa, sit”. That usually means everything and going next to him and sitting down to play with him. I did that, as he can be and will not stop calling out until I . He was playing with beads (珠子), pushing a string through them, which is a great exercise to help fine motor skills. Then, after he finished playing with the beads, it was time to put them back in the box that they are stored in. I saw him pick up each bead, look at it it were made of chocolate and then placed it into its box. With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting . “What a long time it will take! Why cannot he ten beads in one go and drop them in?” said my anxious mind. I noticed that he did this with as much as he had while we were playing. I didn’t see any between his play and his putting away the toy. Obviously he enjoyed both. Then it suddenly me that this boy was enjoying the whole . The journey was his goal. For him the was in the game and after the game, not just in the fun part. What a great perspective: to live each moment as it is the moment; to do each task as it is the most awesome task. Nothing else . Looking at how my son was putting beads into the box me that the process was the goal. The joy of pilgrimage (朝圣) is not in getting there but in every of the journey. This is what living in the NOW is all . Tom, my son, was showing me that it was about thoroughly enjoying every moment with love and peace.

In this life, what did you miss? The wife asked the husband when she was 25. Despondently, the husband replied: "I missed a new job opportunity." When she was 35, the husband angrily told her that he had just missed the bus. At 45, the husband sadly said: "I missed the opportunity seeing my closed relative before his last breath." At 55, the husband said disappointingly: "I missed a good chance to retire." At 65, the husband hurriedly replied: "I missed a dental appointment." At 75, the wife did not ask the husband anymore, the husband was kneeling in front of the very sick wife. Remembering the question the wife used to ask him, this time he asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied: "In this life, I did not miss having you!" The husband was full of tears. He always thought that they could be together forever. He was always busy with work and trifles. So much so he had never been thoughtful to his wife. The husband hugged the wife tightly and said: "Over 50 years, how I had allowed myself to miss your deep love for me." In the busy city life, there are many people who are always busy with work. These people revolve their lives around their jobs, these people sacrifice all their times and health to meet the social expectations. They are unwilling to spend times on health care. They miss the opportunity to be with their children in their growing up. They neglect the loved ones who care for them, and also their health. Nobody knows what is going to happen one year from now. Life is not permanent, so always live in the now. Express your gratitude to your loved ones in words. Show your care with actions. Treat everyday as the last episode of life. In this way, when you are gone, you loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about. 小题1:What did the husband miss when his wife was 55?A.he missed the bus. | B.he missed a dental appointment.. | C.he missed a good chance to retire. | D.he missed the opportunity seeing his closed relative. | 小题2:The underlined word “permanent” (in Para.4) is closest in meaning to “_____”.A.lasting | B.temporary | C.lucky | D.smooth | 小题3:What is the passage mainly about? While attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light outside my door was burned out and I had finding the keyhole. When I to open the door, I around the wall for a light switch. I found a plate where a switch was installed... but no switch! Not discouraged easily, I remembered a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage in the day. I found the bed in the and then the lamp, but when I switched it on, nothing ! I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be able to use whatever light comes in from the to find another lamp. So I my way slowly across the room to the curtains and... no drawstring(拉绳)! I finally stumbled(跌跌撞撞地走)around I found a desk lamp which actually ! When I was a kid, my Mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at hospital. On that evening so long ago, my Mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his toast, smile at my Mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don"t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him spread butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite! When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my Mom apologize to my dad for burning the toast. And I"ll never forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned toast." Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his toast burned. He took me in his arms and said, "Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she"s really tired. And besides – a little burned toast never hurt anyone!" You know, life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. What I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s faults is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. This good quality is the base of any relationship --- husband-wife or parent-child or friendship! As far as I’m concerned, I’m not the best engineer as expected. However, I have made my efforts. That’s enough. So learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life. Burnt toast isn’t a deal-breaker! Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket but into your own. 小题1:When his mother put the burnt biscuit on the table, the author _____.A.wanted to see how his father reacted | B.pretended not to notice it | C.pretended to enjoy the burnt food | D.stopped his father eating the burnt toast | 小题2:We can infer from the passage that the author’s mother .A.She was not good at cooking. | B.She hardly had time to cook at home. | C.She felt sorry for the burnt food. | D.She spent more time on breakfast than dinner. | 小题3:How did the author feel when his father said he loved burnt toast?A.Moved. | B.Puzzled | C.Surprised. | D.Disappointed. | 小题4:According to the text, to get a happy life, one should______ .A.give help to people in need | B.try to be a perfect person | C.learn from one’s mistakes | D.learn to be understanding |

A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration(夸张) will do no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment so that the person so packaged is not a commodity, but a human being, lively and lovely. A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted. Youth however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self - satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow-capped mountain itself is a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the company of the elderly is like reading a thick book of good edition, which attracts one so much that one is unwilling to part with it. As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging. 小题1:The underlined word in the first paragraph is closest to the word ______ in meaning.A.decoration | B.clarification | C.movement | D.identification | 小题2:It can be concluded from the text that ______.A.people should be packaged at all ages | B.people should be packaged in a special way | C.elderly people also care about packaging | D.proper packaging makes people attractive | 小题3:For the middle-aged, attractiveness ______ .
