scientists from the University of Colorado. The same team found that the extent of Arctic sea ice reached the
lowest level in the satellite record in 2002, offering further proof that climate change is already changing the
Arctic.
Researchers from the University of Colorado (UC) say that the speeding up melting appears to be linked to
changes in Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation patterns. The study also found temperatures during
the summer of 2002 were warmer than usual over much of the Arctic Ocean.
"It is likely that sea ice extent will continue to decline over the 21st century as the climate warms,"
researchers added. "With these trends, we may see a 20 percent reduction in the yearly average sea ice by
2050, and by then there might be no ice at all during the summer months."
The report was released on Saturday at the yearly fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, just one
week after an announcement by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that sea ice is
melting about nine percent faster than earlier research had showed, and could disappear entirely by the end of
this century.
"This trend of disappearing Arctic sea ice is one example of the environmental damage that can be linked
to carbon dioxide emissions," said Morgan, "When we have the means to reduce CO2 emissions (散发) and
prevent further damage, we should do our best. National leaders must act now to improve energy efficiency
and increase the use of renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, before it"s too late."
UC scientists judge that a change in the Greenland climate toward warmer conditions would lead to an
increase in the rate of sea level rise, which will bring disasters to the human beings.
A. scientists have studied the pictures of the Arctic sent by satellites
B. scientists began to do research on Arctic sea ice in the year 2002
C. warm temperature has hardly any effect on the extent of Arctic sea ice now but soon will
B. disasters will happen if Arctic sea ice continues to melt faster than before
C. the temperature in Greenland will be too warm for animals and human beings to live on
D. people still think Arctic sea ice is melting slowly
B. carbon dioxide emissions are an example of the environmental damage
C. most environmental problems are caused by carbon dioxide emissions
D. people can still have the chance to solve the above environmental problem

To Rescue a Drowning Person
Don"t jump in to save a drowning person unless you are a trained lifesaver. The victim may pull you under.
Instead, try to toss (抛) a life preserver if you have one. Anything that will float can save the person"s life.
A beach ball, a vacuum jug, or a picnic chest will also help. The National Safety Council points out that many
drowning could be prevented if people knew all the common objects that float well enough to help a drowning
person.
If you are in a boat, or you can find one, use the boat to try to reach the person in trouble. Turn the boat
so the victim can grab the stern. Don"t stand up to help the victim. Stay seated so the boat won"t overturn. Try
to balance the boat as the person climbs aboard. If the boat overturns, stay hanging on to the side for a while
to relax before trying to right it.
B. A cardboard box.
C. Something that floats.
D. Something large and heavy.
B. Paddle the boat towards the coast.
C. Stand up and shout for help.
D. Turn rear (后部) of boat towards the person in the water.
B. people are often drowned themselves when they try to save a drowning person
C. so many drowning people are able to save themselves
D. it is important to drink plenty of fluids before swimming
B. In a humorous story about a couple who sail around the world.
C. In a newspaper account of the National Cup sailing competition.
D. In a science text.
growing field of health care known as Music Therapy, which uses music to treat diseases. Even hospitals
are beginning to use music therapy. This is not surprising, as music affects the body and mind in many
powerful ways.
Researchers have shown that quick music can make a person feel more alert (警觉的), while slow music
can produce a calm, deep thinking state. Also, researchers have found that music can change brainwave
activity levels. This can help the brain to change speeds more easily on its own as needed, which means that
music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you"ve stopped listening.
Breathing and heart rate can also be influenced by music. This can mean slower breathing, slower heart
rate, and a relaxing response. This is why music and music therapy can help reduce the damaging effects of
long-term stress, greatly promoting not only relaxation, but health. Music can also be used to bring about a
more positive state of mind, by helping to keep worries away.
Music has also been found to bring many other benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing
the risk of strokes among others. It is no surprise that so many people are considering music as an important
tool to help the body become or stay healthy.
B. It is a research about music.
C. It is a kind of disease affected by music.
D. It is a method of using music to help treat diseases.
B. quick music is not good for one"s health
C. slow music can help one think more slowly
D. music will have less benefit after one stops listening
B. it can help change brainwaves
C. it is beneficial to breathing and heart rate
D. it can bring a more positive state of mind
B. the benefits music can bring to treat diseases
C. a research on the effect of music
D. the diseases music can help to treat
The "Monster of Lake Tianchi" in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province, northeast China, is back in
the news after several recent sightings. The director of a local tourist office, Meng Fanying, said the monster,
which seemed to be black in colour, was ten metres from the edge of the lake during the most recent sighting.
"It jumped out of the water like a seal-about 200 people on Changbai"s western peak saw it," he said. Although
no one really got a clear look at the mysterious creature, Xue Junlin, a local photographer, claimed that its head
looked like a horse.
In another recent sighting, a group of soldiers claim they saw an animal moving on the surface of the water.
The soldiers, who were walking along the side of the lake, watched the creature swimming for about two
minutes. "It was greenish-black and had a round head with 10-centimetre horns", one of the soldiers said.
A third report came from Li Xiaohe, who was visiting the lake with his family. He claims to have seen a
round black creature moving quickly through the water. After three or four hundred metres it dived into the
water. Ten minutes later the monster appeared again and repeated the action. Mr Li Xiaohe said that he and his
family were able to see the monster clearly because the weather was fine and the lake was calm.
There have been reports of monsters in Lake Tianchi since the beginning of the last century, although no
one has seen one close up. Some photos have been taken but they are not clear because it was too far away.
Many people think the monster may be a distant cousin of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. They also think
that there might be similar creatures in other lakes around the world. Scientists, however, are sceptical. They
say that the low-temperature lake is unlikely to be able to support such large living creatures.
Lake Tianchi is the highest volcanic lake in the world. It is 2,189 metres high and covers an area of about
ten square kilometres. In places it is more than 370 metres deep.

for only three to five minutes. More often the doctor can"t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try
something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain, The doctors might make the person worse
if he operates on the brain.
Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors
should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives
the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on
them, He made the monkeys" blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine
sent the blood back to the monkeys" brains. When the brain"s temperature was 10 ℃, Dr. White stopped the
blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their
operations the monkeys were like what they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could
still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.

I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried
chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook
a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-
away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree
with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If
children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what
they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to
school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games.
Not only is this an unhealthy pastime, it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to
go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be
more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
B. Those who often watch television
C. Those who often have meals at home
D. Those who often walk to school
B. they are too busy to go out to play
C. they can"t choose what to eat
D. there are many fast food shops around
B. guiding
C. driving
D. moving
A. tell a story
B. provide facts
C. give advice
D. compare opinions
