阅读理解。                                                        Save the Animals
Animals are natural resources(资源) that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers(羽毛), for food, for sport, and simply because
they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds
more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will
never be any more.
Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every
animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many
problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers" stores of corn and grain
were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep
down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied(繁殖) quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people
know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止) the killing of any animal or plant on
the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.1. Animals are important to us mainly because __________.A . they give us a source of food
B. they are beautiful and lovely
C. they keep the balance of nature
D. they give us a lot of pleasure2. What has happened to the animals on the earth?A. About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
B. Thousands of kinds of animals are gone forever.
C. A few kinds of animals have died out.
D. All kinds of animals are in danger.3. Why do people kill animals?A. They kill animals for something they need.
B. They kill animals to raise some money.
C. Animals destroy their natural resources.
D. Animals create many problems4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?  A. People care much about animals because they need them.
B. Killing all rats and mice may cause some new problems.
C. Once a certain kind of animal is gone forever, there will never be any more.
D. People must not kill any animal or plant.5. What can we conclude from the fact that quite a few countries have passed laws protecting animals in
danger?A. Animals in danger will be kept away from people.
B. Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
C. The number of some animals in danger will increase.
D. Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals

It is easy for many people to catch a cold in the springtime or fall. It makes us wonder if scientists
can send a man to the moon, why can"t they find a cure for the common cold? The answer is easy.
There are actually hundreds of kinds of cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will
get, so there isn"t a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose
and cause a block in it. You feel terrible because you can"t breathe well, but your body is actually
eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing
the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells. You may feel very
uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. In the United States and some other
countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to make themselves feel better. Some people
take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicine to stop various symptoms (症状)
of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note -some scientists say taking medicines when you have a cold
is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn"t have a way to fight it
and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine
when you have a cold. It goes like this:
It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don"t take medicine, but it takes only seven days
to get over a cold if you take medicine.

MRSA and C-difficile, the authors said.

阅读理解。     Secondhand smoke is a byproduct of cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking. Secondhand smoke occurs
when tobacco burns or when smokers exhale, and it is inhaled (吸入)involuntarily by non-smokers.
Secondhand smoke___________________. The first is called side stream smoke, which is the
smoke released from the burning end of a cigarette or cigar, or from tobacco burning in the bowl of
a pipe. The second is called mainstream smoke, which is exhaled by a smoker.
When nonsmokers are exposed to secondhand smoke, they inhale many of the same cancer-causing
chemicals that smokers inhale
. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, cigarette smoke contains more
than 4,000 chemical compounds, including more than 50 cancer-causing chemicals, and at least 250
chemicals that are either toxic or carcinogenic.
Both side stream and mainstream smoke are dangerous to nonsmokers. Side stream smoke is
generated at lower temperatures and under different conditions than mainstream smoke. As a result, it
contains higher concentrations of many of the toxins found in cigarette smoke.
Secondhand smoke has been designated as a known human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on
Cancer. Secondhand smoke also is listed as an occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health.
According to the 2006 report by the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no risk-free level of exposure
to secondhand smoke: even small amounts of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful to people"s
health. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings can help.
However, they cannot eliminate the exposure of nonsmokers to secondhand smoke. 1.What is the main idea of the text? (no more than 10 words)

Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial
complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that
goes into the dumps would be made into something useful.Even the most dangerous and unpleasant
wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw
materials go into it and what go out.The aim is to find out how many of these raw materials could be
provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only
metal such as steel and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish.
When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this:first, it will pass through metal bars
which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed;then it will pass through a
powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids;after that grounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits
of iron and steel; the rubbish and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first fullscale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away.Indeed, with the growing cost of
transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling
plants before long.
1. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. show us a future way of recycling wastes

C. warn people the danger of some wastes
D. introduce a new recycling plant
2. How many stages are there in the recydling process?
A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
3. What"s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?
A. To deal with waste in a better way.
B. It"s a good way to gain profits.
C. It"s more economical (经济的) than to dump wastes in more distant places.
D. Energy can be got at a low price.
4. The first fullscale huge recycling plants________.
A. have been in existence for 15 years
B. take 15 years to build
C. can"t be built until 15 years later
D. will remain functioning for 15 years
