On a hot summer day, a soft drink can really take away your thirst. At home, at school, in the park or at
the movies-you can find one almost anywhere.
     Carbonated (碳酸的)
You can see bubbles in these! Of all soft drinks sold, about 75 percent are carbonated. But be careful,
carbonated soft drinks have lots of sugar and caffeine. Caffeine is not very good for you in the summer,
because it takes water out of your body. And the sugar can make you overweight if you drink too much.
     Fruit juice
There are different kinds of juice. One kind is made only from fresh fruit. This kind of fruit juice may not
taste sweet enough for some people, but it is nutritious. Another kind of fruit juice tastes good but has lots of
sugar in it. Many young people buy this kind because the advertisements are good. It is bad for your teeth and
bones to drink lots of this.
     Energy drinks
These kinds of drinks have caffeine and things that make people get excited in them. They are sometimes
called"party drinks". Doctors say that if you drink too much of this kind, you may have a heart attack.
     Bottled water
We have lots of different kinds of bottled water, such as mineral water, purified water and distilled (蒸馏
的) water. They are clean and easy to drink. But it is best not to drink very cold water. It may make your
stomach feel bad.
     Sports drinks
Most of these have funny names like "Scream" and "G-Vital". They have lots of vitamins and minerals in
them. After you play sports, you may want to drink one of these.
But if you just spend your summer holiday sitting around watching TV, you won"t need them at all!

The world"s biggest Internet search engine, Google, has proven once again to be king of the Web. Users
can download "Google Wi-Fi" software and then enjoy free Wi-Fi service available in some US cities since
last Tuesday.
Wi-Fi is short for " Wireless Fidelity" (无线上网). It allows laptop computers (笔记本电脑) and personal
digital assistants (PDAs,个人数字助理) to connect to the Internet at high speed by radio signal.
A person with a Wi-Fi enabled computer can connect to the Internet when near one of the network"s
access points. The place covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Google has already set
up two"hotspots" in the US city of San Francisco which provide a free Wi-Fi service.
The Wi-Fi technology even allows users to enjoy a free Internet phone service. Some scientists argue that
Wi-Fi may replace mobile phone networks.
Wi Fi is still limited to a few cities, where there are"hotspots". But its capability (容量) of sending
information has already done better than that of the mobile phone network, even that of 3G(Third Generation
telecommunication technology). Some scientists have started to call Wi-Fi 4G.
In addition to a high speed Internet connection, Wi-Fi has other advantages com pared to mobile phones.
Wi-Fi is global. The same Wi-Fi system works in different countries around the world. Different from using
cell phones, you don"t need to change computers to use Internet phones when you go to other places and
most importantly, many Internet phones cost you nothing at all.

B. Many free Internet phones.
C. Using the same computers for Internet phones when you go to other places.
D. Used in all the US cities
3. Some scientists started to call Wi-Fi 4G, because _____.
A. it is the product of the Google"s 4th generation
B. it is more capable of sending information than the mobile phone network
C. it has been used by more than four generations
D. Wi-Fi will surely take the place of the mobile phone network
4. Which of the following is the best title?

[1] Queuing, warm beer and afternoon tea-what do they have in common? They are all part of British life.
Or so I thought. However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a typical traditional
characteristic of the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done by the
Payments Council. It would seem they are no longer prepared to wait in line.
[2] Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During the second World War, everyone had to queue
up to receive their daily ration (配给) of foods. In fact, if you didn"t stand up and wait in line with all the others,
it was uncivilized (不文明).The famous English double-decker buses, with only one entrance, might also help
explain why queuing was seen as a part of life. Almost always, there is a queue to get on.
[3] But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they
queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one
entrance to their buses, which could explain their more relaxed attitude to the queue.
[4] Two minutes is now the longest time most British are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that
the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer
prepared to queue? As the Internet has become more popular among shoppers, impatience with queuing has
increased.
[5] "Used to buying without delay, customers are even abandoning purchases rather than wait their turn,"
says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. "Shoppers are also less likely to queue for longer if the item they are buying
is of low value." Perhaps I will have to replace "queuing" with"impatience" in my list of things I associate with
the British.
1. What is the main idea of the text? (no more than 8 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
2. Which of the fol1owing can be replaced by the following one? In the past queuing was thought
to be a traditional feature of the British, but now they can"t stand it any more.

3. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 2 with proper phrases.(no more than 4 words)

4. Why do British people tend not to queue any longer? (no more than l5 words)

To understand the marketing concept, it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing
and selling. Not too many years ago, most industries concentrated primarily on the efficient production of
goods, and then relied on "persuasive salesmanship" to move as much of these goods as possible. Such
production and selling focuses on the needs of the seller to produce goods and then convert (使转换) them
into money.
Marketing, on the other hand, focuses on the wants of consumers. It begins with first analyzing the
preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them. This
eye-on-the-consumer approach is known as the marketing concept, which simply means that instead of trying
to sell whatever is easiest to produce, the makers and dealers first find out what the consumer wants to buy
and then go about making it available for purchase.
This concept does not imply that business is benevolent (慈善的) or that consumer satisfaction is given
priority over profit in a company. There are always two sides to every business transaction-the firm and the
customer-and each must be satisfied before trade occurs. Successful merchants and producers, however,
recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and catering to (迎合) customers. A striking
example of the importance of catering to the consumer presented itself in mid-1985, when Coca Cola changed
the flavor of its drink. The non-acceptance of the new flavor by a significant portion of the public brought
about a prompt restoration (恢复) of the Classic Coke, which was then marketed alongside the new.
1. The marketing concept discussed in the passage is ______.
A. the practice of turning goods into money
B. making goods available for purchase
C. the customer-centered approach
D. a form of persuasive salesmanship
2. What was the main concern of industries before the marketing concept was widely accepted?
A. The needs of the market.
B. The efficiency of production.
C. The satisfaction of the user.
D. The preferences of the dealer.
3. According to the passage, "to move as much of these goods as possible" ( in Paragraph 1) means "______".
A. to sell the largest possible quantity of goods
B. to transport goods as efficiently as possible
C. to get rid of these goods in large quantities
D. to redesign these goods for large-scale production
4. What does the restoration of the Classic Coke best prove?
A. Traditional goods have a stronger appeal to the majority of people.
B. It takes time for a new product to be accepted by the public.
C. Consumers with conservative tastes are often difficult to please.
D. Products must be designed to suit the taste of the consumer.

Mistakes are a part of life. To err is human. Failure is also a part of life, not the end of life. Be happy facing life"s challenges. When you make the effort to be happy and to improve your life, you are actually rewarded along the way.
Life is like a game and maybe you can award (奖励) points for every effort that has been a success for you. Try it. Add ten points for every achievement. And when you have reached 50 points, just yell, "Hey, I"ve won!" and give yourself a reward. If you happen to have missed your points for whatever reasons, tell yourself,"well, I tried!" which is better than not trying at all. Don"t let it be said you didn"t try.
What is it that you want to make yourself happy? Actually happiness means different things to different people. For example, an athlete will be happy winning his first race. For a new mother happiness would be seeing her baby"s first steps. Happiness for a poor person would mean having a meal just for today. So happiness for you is really something simple that you want for yourself.
It really does not have to be big. As a matter of fact you should always have realistic expectations. Make the best out of every given situation. If you expect a certain result from a situation and it does not happen, don"t get despondent. This just means trying harder next time. We all have in us the power to succeed. Don"t let "give up" be a part of your vocabulary.
1. By saying "To err is human", the author means that ______.
A. human beings should try to avoid making mistakes
B. no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes
C. mistakes and failures make up our life
D. human beings make mistakes easily.
2. What"s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Try to reach 50 points.
B. Never stop trying in your life.
C. Award yourself for your success.
D. Don"t be afraid of missing your points
3. The author proves his idea in Paragraph 3 through ______.
A. examples
B. numbers
C. experiments
D. stories
4. The underlined word "despondent" in the last paragraph means ______.
A. frightened
B. disappointed
C. surprised
D. excited
