39 million Americans will be 65 or older by the year 2010, 51 million by 2020,and 65 million by 2030.
The "graying" of the United States is mainly due to the fact that people in the U.S. are living longer. As
a matter of fact, the number of U.S citizens 85 years old and older is growing six times as fast as the rest
of the population. It is also largely due to the old- growing of the "baby boomers", the generation born after
World War Ⅱ. In 1957,over 4.3 million babies were born. More than 75 million Americans were born between
1946 and 1964,the largest generation in U.S. history. In less than twenty years, millions of them will become
elderly people.
The "graying" of the U. S. will greatly affect the nation"s family and workforce. One likely development
will be a gradual change in the family unit; it will move away from the nuclear family and towards a
multigenerational family. The other likely development will be a change in the proportion (比例) of the nation"s
workforce. In 1989 there were 3.5 workers for every person 65 or older; by the year 2030, there will only be
2 workers for every person 65 and older.
答案
6. change 7. Workforce 8. Nuclear 9. Workers 10. 1989

two and keep her there. That would be a good life, living in the country, near the sea with my wife and with
everything that I own here; my TV set, the record player and all. And with the rest of my family near me.
Every day I wake up with that hope. I have doubts, too, now and then. Sometimes I have a dream. I see
myself leaving New York and going to the country, but when I get there I find myself friendless and alone.

The recent success of children" s books has made the general public aware that there" s a huge market out
there.
And there"s a growing need for new writers trained to create the $ 3 billion worth of children" s books
bought each year...plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and
teenagers.
Who are these needed writers? They" re ordinary folks like you and me.
But Am I Good Enough?
I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I
didn"t know where to turn for help.
Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing aptitude(潜能), and it turned out to be the
inspiration I needed.
The Promise That Paid Off
The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:
You will complete at least one manuscript (手稿) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish
our course.
I really didn" t expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened, I sold three stories.
And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute.
Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children" s books and over 300 stories and articles.
Free Test and Brochure
We offer a free aptitude test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized homestudy courses on the basis of one-on-one training.
Realize your writing dream today. There" s nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.
Sincerely,
Kristi Holl, Instructor .

your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to
give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you"ll still be there for him when
he needs you.
Expeet a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use
or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don" t insist he tell you what" s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he"ll clam up. Instead, let
him attempt to solve (解决) things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you" re always there for him
should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager" s privacy (隐私). Never read his mail or listen
in on personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family" s
telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an
equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls,
but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone
that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.
B. show respect
C. refuse to talk
D. seek help
on a bus or on the subway. 1
No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. But although they all
have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport (交通) that has become a cultural icon (圣像).
In London, to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the "underground",also called the"tube". 2 With
12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the tube, is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around
London. In London, you are never far from a tube station.
3 They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn"t take you
everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy; just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But, with over 12,000
yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.
Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of
San Francisco. The city was once damaged by a serious earthquake (地震) and challenged (挑战,考验) by cars. 4
But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you" d better rent a car. 5 It can take hours
to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city center. The light rail line only runs
between the Long Beach hotel area and the city center. That" s why Angelenos love their private cars more than
any other people in the world.
B. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.
C. The city has the oldest and most complicated (复杂的 ) underground railway system in
the world and is the pride of many Londoners.
D. The city" s public transportation is terrible.
E. As darkness fell, hundreds of people in the village left their houses.
F. New York is famous for its yellow cabs.
