I fell in love with England because it was quaint(古雅)-all those little houses, looking terribly
old-fashioned but nice, like dolls" houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London.
I’ve slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it"s an ugly town now.
Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners.
The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners-people
shut doors heavily to your face and politeness is disappearing.
I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You"re forced to live indoors. In Paris
I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub,
and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.
As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb(大量的钱)on taxis because I will not take
public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use _it ,but now I’m afraid.
The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and
that"s typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbor who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles
away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.

1. The writer doesn"t like London because she______.
A. is not used to the life there now
B. has lived there for seventeen years
C. prefers to live in an old-fashioned house
D. has to be polite to everyone she meets there
2. Where do people usually meet their friends in England? ______.
A. In a cafe.
B. In a restaurant.
C. In a nightclub
D. In a pub.
3. The underlined part "it" (in Para. 4) refers to______.
A. a taxi
B. the money
C. a bomb
D. public transport
4. The writer took her neighbor to France for Christmas because he______.
A. felt lonely in England
B. had never been to France
C. was from a typical French family
D. didn"t like the British idea of family

Do you know why I am always in support of learning a foreign language? The reasons are as follows:
1. Improve your English
I know this might not make sense at first but hear me out. As a person who speaks only one
language, you have no basis for comparison(比较);all you know is English. In different languages
the same idea is often expressed in different ways. You will find yourself speaking and writing more
creative sentences. There is a reason why most great writers and poets are students of many
languages.2.______________
Travelling is one of the great joys of life and also one of the most wonderful experience. Why not
get the most out of your experience? If you don"t know the native language of the country that you are
visiting, you are completely excluded from the culture. The locals(当地人)don"t speak to you.
Knowing even a few phrases will make a huge difference. You will meet more people and find it much
easier to get around.
3. Join the global community
The majority of the world does not speak English. The truth is that new thoughts and ideas are
happening everywhere and they are not being immediately translated. The world is getting smaller and
we are coming into contact(接触) with more non-English speakers all the time. Gain an advantage
for yourself in business and personal relationships by being able to communicate with people in their
language.
Now that you know three great reasons for learning a foreign language, do it right now.

1. According to the author,______.
A. it is necessary for writers and poets to learn many languages
B. knowing another language will make you able to write a novel
C. studying another language will help you make your native language better
D. if you only know one language, you have no ability to appreciate the language
2. The underlined word“excluded”in the third paragraph probably means______.
A. shut out
B. joined in
C. sent for
D. put up
3. Which of the following can be used to fill in the blank in the passage?
A. Help enrich your life
B. Help you to become rich
C. Help widen your knowledge
D. Increase your travel experiences
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Three Great Reasons for Learning a Foreign Language
B. A Foreign Language Help You Gain Respect
C. Improve Your English by Comparison
D. Build Confidence Through Learning a Foreign Language

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know
what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown
out with the rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony
has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品), Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies
now also take back some old computers.
In some countries, laws are being passed, too. Computer companies will have to pay for
collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The
idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage
them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).
Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all.
Hundreds of organizations(组织)are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old
computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.
The computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体)and people who need them. Giving a
used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful
things-and cut down on waste, too.
1. What do many people do with old computers?
A. They repair them.
B. They sell them.
C. They send them to others.
D. They stop using them.
2. What do the organizations do to solve the problem of old computers?
A. Help the computer companies to collect them.
B. Repair and send them to those who need them.
C. Help people to learn to use them.
D. Turn rubbish into useful things.
3. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Repairing old computers.
B. Encouraging to make cheap computers.
C. Recycling old computers.
D. Helping those who need computers

Movie magic can defy reality, but actors are inescapably human. They grow and change, and don"t
necessarily change for the better.
Harry Potter actors, who are now saying their final goodbyes to their roles, have all become
fully-fledged (成熟的) grown-ups, worlds apart from the little kids who began the Hogwarts" adventures
in 2001.
While many fans feel sad that the magical franchise (特权) is coming to an end, some feel even sadder
to see how much the actors have changed over the years.
"Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry Potter) went from being a really cute kid to a thin, pale-looking
guy," said Filipino Internet User Lealuvy."I kind of wish he stayed a kid forever.""
Radcliffe himself doesn"t seem to be bothered by his change of appearance. In an interview with GQ
magazine last week, he teased himself: "If people find me sexy or cool, it"s because they like short, little,
nerdy guys. And we do have our niche (合适的职业)."
Meanwhile, actors growing up to be handsome have their headaches.
Harry Melling, who played Potter"s cousin Dudley Dursley, told The Telegraph that he was almost
recast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when producers discovered he" d lost a lot of weight he
had as a kid. He was too thin for the part.
"They (the producers) did this double take, "Oh my God, we are going to have to do something", and I
felt guilty," said Meiling.
Aside from changes in looks, the gradual personality change of child stars is another big concern of
audience and producers.
Miley Cyrus began her career at 13 in Disney"s hit TV series Hannah Montana.
When Cyrus decided to show her adult personality by releasing "sexy" photos, people began to get
uneasy about her. Reports said that furious Disney bosses were considering replacing Cyrus with a more
clean-cut teen star.
Cyrus finally kept her role after public apologies. But some parents banned their children watching the
show.
"My daughter has been banned from watching the show," supermodel Cindy Crawford told Showbiz
Spy." I really don"t think Miley Cyrus is much of a role model for my kid."
