and were greeted with a sign on the front door. The sign said: "Yesterday the person who has been
hindering (阻碍) your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral (葬礼)
in the room that has been prepared in the gym."
At first everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but after a while they
started getting curious about who this person might be.
The excitement grew as the employees arrived at the gym to pay their last respects. Everyone
wondered: "Who is this person that was hindering my progress? Well, at least he"s no longer here."
One by one the employees got closer to the coffin (棺材) and when they looked inside it they
became speechless. They stood over the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched
the deepest part of their soul.
There was a mirror inside the coffin. Everyone who looked inside it could see himself. There was
also a sign next to the mirror that said: "There is only one person who can set limits to your growth: it
is YOU."
You are the only person who can revolutionize (彻底改变) your life. You are the only person who
can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help
yourself.
Your life does not change when your family changes, when your friends change, when your boss
changes, and when your company changes.
Your life changes when you change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize
that you are the only one responsible for your life.

unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, "You mean fortunately." He explained
that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to grumble as I approached it but now I tell
myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and
get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought
of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationery exercise bicycles when
I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.
Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life.
Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and
writing proved inspirational. She wrote, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only
through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition
inspired and success achieved."
One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity (逆境). From
time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents, afflictions and difficulties. Some are of
our making but many confront us through no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the
adversity we can choose our attitude towards it.
Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He
was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces in the Battle of
Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war.
He said, "Don"t listen to anyone who tells you that you can"t do this or that. That"s nonsense.
Make up your mind, you"ll never use crutches (拐杖) or a stick, then have a go at everything. Go
to school, join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them
persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible."
The biographies(传记)of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome
the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose
their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.
Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.
B. People are silly to pay to go to the gym.
C. Those who want to achieve success can"t expect to live an easy life.
D. People"s attitude towards adversity is the only factor that determines whether they will succeed.

C. If you venture nothing, you will have nothing.
D. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.
B. what steps to take to change your attitude towards the adversity you face
C. what great people have in common
D. why it is important to keep optimistic in face of adversity
B. Different Attitudes towards Adversity
C. Nothing is Impossible
D. Life Is Full of Adversity

probably received more study and attracted more attention than any other. Politicians winning an
election, salespeople presenting products and etc. All depend upon this form of public communication.
Even people who do not make speaking a part of their daily work are often asked to make public
speeches: students at graduation, for instance, or members of churches, clubs or other organizations.
Nearly everyone speaks in public at some time or other, and those who perform the task well often
become leaders.
There are many reasons for speaking in public. A public speaker may hope to teach an audience
about new ideas, or provide information about some topic. Creating a good feeling or entertaining an
audience may be another purpose. Public speakers, however, most often seek to persuade an audience
to accept new opinions, to take certain actions, or to see the world in a new way.
Public speakers usually know well in advance when they are scheduled to make a speech.
Consequently, they are able to prepare their message before they deliver it. Sometimes, though,
speakers must deliver the message unprepared, or off the cuff, such as when they are asked to speak
at a wedding reception or to participate in an interview.
When they do not have to speak unprepared, most speakers write their own speeches. Politicians
and business managers sometimes employ professional writers who prepare their speeches for them.
These professional writers may work alone or in small teams. Although the speaker may have some
ideas into the contents of the speech, the writers sometimes have a great influence over the opinions
expressed by their employers. Regardless of how a speech is prepared, the person who delivers it is
given credit for its effect upon its hearers.

Most drinks stating that they are fruitflavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the
rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content
can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production is highly
competitive. __1__ It will increase profits, and consumers won"t always realize they are being tricked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables,
or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the
contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores. __2__ Of the 11 products that did contain
strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box
contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
__3__ Let"s take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing no
artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.
__4__ Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current
UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing
a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is
misleading. __ 5 Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It"s time to take
measures to protect the consumers" rights."
A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.
B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn"t contain any fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.
G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.
According to psychologists (心理学家), it is much more serious than simply deciding between
a soap opera and a sports program, or between pop music and politics. This television conflict
is part of a bigger power game which goes on in homes, even though most of the players do not
realize that they are playing a game at all. "It"s such a game as is not easy to notice," says
psychologist Dr David Lewis, "that many people don"t even know they"re playing it."
Unconsciously, people begin to play the game as soon as they meet their future husband or
wife. By the time the couple get married, the rules of game are already formed. The big decision,
like where to live and which school to send the children to, are usually joint decision. When it
comes to less important things, it"s a different matter. Here is just one example of this process at
work. A husband looks through a pile of holiday brochures (小册子) and announces his preference:
"The South of France". And his wife quickly agrees before he realizes that the only brochures she
gave him were those for the South of France. Similarly, she may decide on how the home should
be decorated, but he chooses the new car and decides what the family does at weekends.
"Family power struggles are interesting," says Dr Lewis. "Of course, some people are naturally
more dominant (占支配地位的) than others, and the most dominant personality in a family tries
to lead. These days, even though so many couples make a special effort to have a true and equal
partnership, men generally have a greater need to appear to be in physical control. Women, on
the other hand, are not so interested in physical control as in emotional control. On the whole,
they"re more controlling and can make the man think of something as his idea in the first place."
B. It"s an interesting game a family likes to play.
C. It"s difficult to choose with so many programs.
D. It"s a matter of power in a family.
B. Where to settle down.
C. What kind of car to buy.
D. What to do at weekends.
B. Men are much better controlled than women.
C. Women are rather skillful in influencing men.
D. Women are emotional about important matters.
B. Whose finger is on the button at home.
C. How family members play games at home.
D. What decision family members make together.
