read letters,reports,trade publications,interoffice communications,not to mention newspapers
and magazines;a never-ending flood of words. In 1 a job or advancing in one,the ability to
read and comprehend 2 can mean the difference between success and failure.Yet the unfortunate
fact is that most of us are 3 readers. Most of us develop poor reading 4 at an early age,and never
get over them. The main deficiency(缺陷)5 in the actual stuff of language itself-words.Taken
individually, words have 6 meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and
paragraphs.7 however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads
one word at a time, often regressing to 8 words or passages.Regression, the tendency to look back
over 9 you have just read,is a common bad habit in reading.Another habit which 10 down the
speed of reading is vocalization-sounding each word either orally or mentally as 11 reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an 12,which moves a
bar(or curtain)down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate 13 the
reader finds comfortable,in order to "stretch" him.The accelerator forces the reader to read fast,14
word-by-word reading,regression and subvocalization,practically impossible.At first 15 is sacrificed
for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts you will not only read faster,16 your
comprehension will improve. Many people have found 17 reading skill greatly improved after some
training.18 Chalice Au,a business manager,for instance,his reading rate was a reasonably good 172
words a minute 19 the training, now it is an excellent 1378 words a minute. He is delighted that how
he can 20 a lot more reading materials in a short period of time.

concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan
and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along(无计划地进行),
doing a bit of this subject or that,as the mood takes them,or letting their set work pile
up until the last possible moment.
Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did work out a timetable
for themselves they would not keep to it,or would have to change it frequently, since they
can never predict(foresee)from one day to the next what their activities will be.
No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others. There
are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable, and dislike being tied
down to a fixed program of work. Many able students state that they work in cycles. When
they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time.
On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully
understand the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become used
to a work routine, and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for
the more important areas of their work. The "tough-minded" school of workers doesn"t fully
accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration.
Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken
belief either in their own talent or in the value of "freedom".Freedom from control and discipline
(纪律)leads to unhappiness rather than to "self-expression" or "personality development".Our
society insists on regular habits, timekeeping and punctuality, and whether we like it or not,if we
mean to make our way in society,we have to meet its demands.

Not long ago, I opened an e-mail from Jennifer, a lady I knew through business in Guelph, Ontario,
Canada, "I have been seeing how I feel after interacting with different people and thinking who I feel good about, 1 "
Then she invited me and eleven other women to a "Movie Night" to be held every six weeks at her
house. She promised we were sure to enjoy a good time. 2 She made it clear in her invitation that there was no pressure to show up to all or any movie nights. Wonderful! 3 I gratefully accepted her kind
invitation.
4 Although all the women were eager to participate, some said they didn"t see themselves as
optimistic people. "I told them they didn"t have to be cheerful around me all the time. I invited them
because they made me feel happy," she says.
5 In a US study, researchers measured the happiness of 4739 people at regular interval over 20
years. The study found that a person"s happiness depends on the happiness of people they connect with.
Amazingly it also found that a person"s happiness spreads not only between direct friends, but also
among friends of your friends" friends!
A. She is one of my good friends.
B. Research shows such gatherings make sense.
C. Later she had some puzzled reactions to her invitation.
D. And you are on my list.
E. We would chat, eat and watch feel-good movies.
F. I e-mailed her back immediately.
G. She was not satisfied with the women.
John Steinbeck once said,"All Americans believe they are born fishermen. For a man to
admit to a distaste in fishing would be like denouncing(公开谴责)mother-love or hating
moonlight."
I can"t say that I"m the biggest John Steinbeck fan.Actually, the only thing I can remember
reading by him was "The Pearl" when I was in middle school, but I couldn"t agree more with
the man when it comes to fishing.Whether I am on a boat in the middle of Lay Lake, fishing
off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon(大海鲢)or catching rainbow trout(虹鳟鱼)in
the Shoshone River of Wyoming, fishing is my life.
According to the American Sportsfishing Asso ciation, the fishing industry brings in more
than $116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.
Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that.Fi shing is a way
of life for many people and a way to escape everyday stress.Being a fisherman makes me
a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life.Even President
Bush can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when
the job gets too stressful.
I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake
Mitchell.Although I didn"t understand what I was doing,I did know that my grandfather was
happy and that made me happy.Since then I have spent the past 16 years on the rivers and
lakes of Alabama.
After years of practice, before and after work,I slowly developed an understanding of
fishing.My boss,Ric Horst,took me back to the Shoshone,and I managed to bring in a
19-inch cutthroat trout.Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me.He not only
showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape
your problems.
Since then,prime-time(黄金时间)season seems to take forever to arrive.
Now,with the ending of February and beginning of March in sight, the excitement of
heading out to Lake Tuscaloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something
has finally returned.
B.it is unthinkable for an American to admit his dislike of fishing
C.all Americans are expert at fishing
D.those who dislike fishing would not love their mothers
B.when he went fishing with his grandfather at Lake Mitchell
C.after he had spent 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama
D.after he went fishing with his boss,Ric Horst on the Shoshone
B.The author regards fishing as a very important part in his life.
C.The author agreed with John Steinbeck the most when he was in middle school.
D.President Bush often goes fishing in public in order to collect ideas for his job.
B.To explain the reason why so many Americans like fishing.
C.To make others understand the industry of fishing.
D.To express his opinion about fishing in different time of the year.
So everyone tries to pursue happiness. What"s the pursuit of happiness? It means
practicing happiness regularly, making it a habit, and reprogramming our brains by creating
new emotional pathways.
Psychologists" studies have suggested that several factors contribute to our happiness.
It"s shown that only 10% of our ability for happiness depends upon external(外在的)
circumstances! 50% of our happiness level is dependant on genetic genes and 50% is
learned. Of the 50% learned, only 10% is determined by our circumstances. The other
40% is determined by our habitual thoughts, feeling, words, and actions. That 40% is
what we have power to change!
So how can we learn to be happy? It takes practice, practice, practice. Here are
three ways to get started.
Power of positive thinking: Our negative selftalk is so powerful; it overwhelms
(覆没)all other input. It therefore takes numerous positive experiences to overcome
a single negative one. For each negative thought, state three positive qualities that you
possess and start creating a new positive thought.
Open your heart and share the best of you with others: Happy people are more
giving, outgoing, flexible and creative. Does serving others make you happy or does being
happy better enable you to be of service? What difference does it make? Just reach out and
start giving!
Honor yourself: Be gentle and forgiving toward yourself. You need to unconditionally
love and approve of your innermost(内心的)being, which is the keystone that supports all
gateways toward personal growth, fulfillment, and happiness.
True happiness isn"t a short pleasure but a sense of wholeness and fulfillment. Happiness is our right as human beings and to pursue happiness is our duty.
