阅读理解     When you see geese flying along in V formation, you might consider what science has discovered
as to why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V
formation, the whole flock at least 71 per cent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
Individuals who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more
quickly and easily because they are travelling on the pushing force of one another.
When a god se falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone,
and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we
have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same
way we are.
When the head goose gets tired, it moves back in the formation and another goose flies point. It is
sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What messages do
we give when we honk from behind?
Finally -and this is important -when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of
formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection.
They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on
their own, or with another formation, to catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.1. By flying in "V" formation, a goose can ______.A. learn who leads the group

阅读理解      The first harvest means the death of the crops as grain is gathered, and the thanksgiving of the people
to the goddesses who provided them with life sustaining grains.
Late July and early August mark the middle of summer and the beginning of the harvest season.
"Famine (饥荒) was common during July as the previous years" harvest supplies were almost totally used UP. Harvesting grains in August ensured the continuance of life and was recognized by many cultures as a
time of thanksgiving.
In ancient Rome the grain goddess Ceres was honored on the first harvest called Ceresalia in her
honor. Our modern word cereal comes from her name. Other goddesses celebrated at the first harvest
were Demeter, Persephone, Venus and the Corn Mother. Many native American tribes honor the Corn
Grandmother during the Festival of Green Corn. It was held during the full moon when the corn was
ready to be harvested. The celebration lasted for several days and was a time to be thankful and a time
of forgiveness.
Lughnasadh was a happy time regarded as the first of three harvest festivals. Lughnasadh honors the
god Lugh, and his foster-mother Taillte who died while clearing the fields of Ireland for agriculture. In
Old Irish "Lunasa" means "August". The Celts celebrate this day from sunset of August 1 to sunset on
August 2 as the wake of Lugh, the Sun-King whose light began to decline after the summer solstice (夏至). At this time oaths ( 誓言) were taken and contracts were signed.
This day was known to the Saxons as Lammas, or loaf-mass, a time when grains were harvested and
baked into bread. The grain was harvested, giving its life so that people might live. The grain was made
into bread, and the bread was symbolic of the gods. Christians later adopted this holiday as a day when
bread, made from the first fruits of the harvest, was brought to the church to be blessed.
August is a time to reflect on the past year, on things that have come to fruition and things that failed.
A time to let go of regrets and say farewell to things that have passed and preserve all the fruits that have
been gathered to hold onto for future memories.1. The passage should be entitled ______.A. August Harvest Festivals
B. August Tradition
C. Gathering Grain
D. Special August Time2. What was the significance of harvesting grains in August?A. It welcomed the death of the crops.
B. It provided the chance of thanksgiving.
C. It guaranteed the continuance of life.
D. It marked the middle of summer.3. Which of the following is NOT a close relationship according to the passage?A. Ancient Romans - the grain goddess Ceres. "
B. Native Americans - the Corn Grandmother.
C. Christians - the god Lugh and his foster-mother Taillte.
D. The Celts - Lugh, the Sun-King.4. From the last sentence of the 4th paragraph "At this time oaths were taken and contracts were
signed", we can infer that the Celts are ______.A. happy at that time
B. Serious about the day
C. are full of hope
D. thankful at that time

阅读理解      Among the dead in South Asia"s tsunami were many tourists at Sri Lanka"s national wildlife park at
Yala. But very few of the park"s animals - elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and wild cats -appear to have
died. There are theories that animals can sense natural disasters and flee to safety. First, it s possible that
the animals may have heard the quake before the tsunami hit. The underwater rupture likely produced
sound waves known as infrasound (次声) or infrasonic sound. Humans can"t hear infrasound, but many
animals including dogs, elephants, tigers and pigeons can. A second early warning sign the animals might
have sensed is ground vibration (振动). The massive quake would have produced vibrational waves
known as Rayleigh waves. These vibrations move through the ground like waves move on the surface
of the ocean but faster.   They travel at ten times the speed of sound. The Rayleigh waves would have
reached Sri Lanka hours before the water hit. Mammals, birds, insects and spiders can sense Rayleigh
waves. So the animals at Yala might have felt the Rayleigh waves and then run to higher ground. But
what about humans? While we can"t hear infrasound, we can feel it, although we don"t necessarily
know we"re feeling it. We also experience Rayleigh waves by special sensors in our joints, which exist
just for that purpose. Sadly, it seems we don"t pay attention to the information when we get it. Maybe
we screen it out because there"s so much going on before our eyes and in our ears. Humans have a lot
of things on our minds and usually that works out OK.1. Why did few animals at Yala die when the tsunamis that caused a huge number of human deaths hit?A. Because the animals were staying at a higher place in the park.
B. Because the animals were able to run much faster than human beings.
C. Because human beings cannot hear the infrasonic sound.
D. Because the animals might have picked up the danger signals and ran away.2. Which of the statements about "Ravleigh waves" is true?A. Rayleigh waves are massive vibrational waves that usually cause quakes or tsunamis.
B. Rayleigh waves move on the ocean surface at a speed ten times that of sound waves.
C. Rayleigh waves can be felt both by animals and human beings.
D. Rayleigh waves, just like infrasonic sound, can only be felt by animals.3. When a tsunami hits, it is possible that ______.A. we can"t feel the infrasound so we can"t be informed of the danger
B. we can feel Rayleigh waves as well as infrasound so we are able to escape the danger like animals
C. we were so busy with things on our minds that we feel neither infrasound nor Rayleigh waves
D. we think nothing of the information of its coming even though we can also get it4. What does the underlined word "that" in the last sentence refer to?A. Screening out the information.
B. There being so much going on before our eyes and in our ears.
C. Having a lot of things on our minds.
D. Paying attention to the information.

任务型阅读。
认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填1个单词。     I used to be tile messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error,
I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all
of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions
of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn"t work, you have way two and way three to
lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It"s just a matter of being organized. Chances
are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of those ways doesn"t work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will show
that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results obtained with
making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be
sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don"t try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and make
you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by
sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even
money.
So, don"t be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills
necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and
manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

So you"re between the ages of 13 and 24. What makes you happy?
A worried, weary parent might imagine the answer to sound something like this: Sex, drugs, a little
rock "n" roll (摇滚乐). Maybe some cash, or at least the car keys.
It turns out the real answer is quite different. Spending time with family is the top answer to that
open-ended question, according to an extensive survey-more than 100 questions asked of 1,280
people ages 13-24 - conducted by The Associated Press and MTV on the nature of happiness
among America"s young people.
Next is spending time with friends, followed by time with a significant other. And even better for
parents: Nearly three quarters of young people say their relationship with their parents makes them
happy.
"They"re my foundation," says Kristiana St.John, 17, a high-school student from Queens in New
York. "My mom tells me that even if I do something stupid, she"s still going to love me no matter what.
Just knowing that makes me feel very happy and blessed."
You might think money would be clearly tied to a general sense of happiness. But almost no one
says "money" when asked what makes them happy, though people with the highest family incomes are
generally happier with life. However, having highly educated parents is a stronger predictor of happiness
than income.
From the body to the soul: Close to half say religion and spirituality are very important. And more
than half say they believe there is a higher power that has an influence over things that make them happy.
Beyond religion, simply belonging to an organized religious group makes people happier.
And parents, here"s some more for you: Most young people in school say it makes them happy.
Overwhelmingly (压倒性地), young people think marriage would make them happy and want to be
married some day. Most also want to have kids.
Finally, when asked to name their heroes, nearly half of respondents mentioned one or both of their
parents. The winner, by a nose: Mom.

A. money is the most concerned.
B. work condition is the key factor.
C. parents" quality is vital.
D. friends" quality is decisive.
4. From the 7th paragraph we can infer that____.
A. the body is more important than the soul.
B. spirituality is more important than money.
C. religion is accepted by a large number of Americans.
D. religion group have saved many young Americans.
