阅读理解     Dog walkers provide a 20 to 60minute daily walk for a client"s(客户)dog, making sure the dog
answers the call of nature and gets proper exercise. They often walk more than one dog at a time. Some
walkers work for dogwalking services, especially when starting out. Others have their own businesses,
and build by word of mouth and advertising. Dog walkers often work parttime, and some provide other
services like pet sitting or transporting.
In New York, dog walkers usually earn about $25 an hour. If you work for a dogwalking business,
you may earn less; if you are on your own dealing with several dogs at the same time, it may be more.
What do you have to do to be a dog walker?
First, have a real love of dogs, and have a good knowledge of how to get on with dogs. Try calling
dogwalking services to find out about openings. If you"re on your own, you"ll need to network and market yourself. You might advertise your services in pet offices, grooming businesses, or neighborhood papers.
You will need business cards and a mobile phone, and have good references and a clean background.
You"ll also have to deal with taxes and insurance. You should be physically fit, friendly, neatly dressed
and extremely dependable. Many dog walkers are bonded(被担保的)and insured, and this is a definite
selling point to clients.
Of course, you will be cleaning up dog waste! You will also be outside in all kinds of weather. You
may have to deal with dogs that don"t like each other, and difficult owners. It"s also an upanddown kind
of business-clients can come and go.
For pet lovers, spending the workday with dogs instead of navigating office politics is its own reward! You are your own boss-you can dress casually, your doggy clients will love you unconditionally, and
you"ll get some great exercise!1. By writing the passage the writer tries to________. A. introduce you to a job
B. enrich your knowledge about pets
C. advertise for a business
D. tell you more about life in New York2. The passage offers no information about how to ________ as a dog walker. A. find a client  B. train a dog
C. get prepared  D. make more money3. One who wants to ________ may find the passage helpful. A. take up a weekend job

C. make money in his daily spare time

阅读理解。     What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school
subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at
mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good
at office work. So it is important to do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially
strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects
can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Knowledge of history is not required for most
jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This
is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in
your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery (烹饪术) and look for a job where you can
improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If
nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with
older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important,
you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle
(运用) tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face
any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too
good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead
recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.1. Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph?   A. The importance of doing well at school.
B. Using school performance to help to choose a career.
C. The importance of being good at all subjects.
D. The indirect value of schoolwork. 2. The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is probably _______.   A. a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B. useful for his future work
C. a good way to earn extra money
D. a good way to find out his weak points   3. According to the passage, if a student"s school record is not good, he ________.   A. will be a complete failure in his future work
B. will not be able to find a suitable job
C. will regret not having worked harder at school
D. may do well in his future work 4. Which subject is supposed to have no direct value for job hunting?   A. Mathematics.
B. English.
C. Technical drawing.
D. History. 5. The whole passage centers on _______. A. choosing a career according to what one is skilled in
B. acquiring knowledge by working hard at school
C. finding one"s strong and weak points
D. developing one"s abilities useful in school work

A mobile phone service which makes your handset scream when it"s been stolen has been started,
with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.
The Remote XT system uses software to link customers" mobile phones directly to a secure remote
server, which stores all their data from phone numbers to text messages and e-mails. If the owner"s phone
is lost or stolen, they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered. The handset is then disabled,
and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm
sounding like a high-pitched(尖声的) scream, which can only be stopped by removing the battery.
Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally,
as soon as the victim gets a news phone, the system designers said.
"By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner the phones become worthless and we
will see the market for stolen handsets stopped once and for all," said Mark Whiteman, managing
director of Remote XT. For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a
fee of 9.99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average users within two years as
mobile technology advances.
According to the latest UK government statistics, mobile phone theft has risen 190 percent in recent
years, with one third of all UK robberies now solely involving mobile phones.

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?
Mothers who feel their children don" t appreciate them can add another grievance to the list: half
the time, their children are lying to them.A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that
undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations.Still, mums should feel better than
total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77 % of the time.
Bella Depaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked
77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whethe
r they lied at any time.DePaulo named lying broadly, as "when you intentionally try to mislead
someone", so she would catch the smallest of lies.
The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had
been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost $50 rather than $20 so that they would
send him extra money.Female students constantly told their plain-looking roommates that they were
pretty."They are everyday lies," says DePaulo.
DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to.
College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time.
In close relationships, people were more likely to tell "kind-hearted" lies, designed to protect feelings,
rather than self-serving lies.
Romantic partners are somewhere between close friends and acquaintances.Students lied to
romantic partners about a third of the time. DePaulo thinks that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty
than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.
Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children
talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little
interaction with them.
