A mobile phone service which makes your handset scream when it"s been stolen has been started,
with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.
The Remote XT system uses software to link customers" mobile phones directly to a secure remote
server, which stores all their data from phone numbers to text messages and e-mails. If the owner"s phone
is lost or stolen, they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered. The handset is then disabled,
and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm
sounding like a high-pitched(尖声的) scream, which can only be stopped by removing the battery.
Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally,
as soon as the victim gets a news phone, the system designers said.
"By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner the phones become worthless and we
will see the market for stolen handsets stopped once and for all," said Mark Whiteman, managing
director of Remote XT. For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a
fee of 9.99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average users within two years as
mobile technology advances.
According to the latest UK government statistics, mobile phone theft has risen 190 percent in recent
years, with one third of all UK robberies now solely involving mobile phones.

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?
Mothers who feel their children don" t appreciate them can add another grievance to the list: half
the time, their children are lying to them.A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that
undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations.Still, mums should feel better than
total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77 % of the time.
Bella Depaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked
77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whethe
r they lied at any time.DePaulo named lying broadly, as "when you intentionally try to mislead
someone", so she would catch the smallest of lies.
The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had
been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost $50 rather than $20 so that they would
send him extra money.Female students constantly told their plain-looking roommates that they were
pretty."They are everyday lies," says DePaulo.
DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to.
College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time.
In close relationships, people were more likely to tell "kind-hearted" lies, designed to protect feelings,
rather than self-serving lies.
Romantic partners are somewhere between close friends and acquaintances.Students lied to
romantic partners about a third of the time. DePaulo thinks that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty
than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.
Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children
talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little
interaction with them.

"How lucky you are to be a doctor…" Anyone who"s a doctor is right out of luck,  I thought.
Anyone_who"s_studying_medicine_should_have_his_head_examined.
You may think I want to change my job. Well,  at the moment I do. As one of my friends says-even
doctors have a few friends-it"s all experience. Experience! I don"t need such experience. I need a
warm, comfortable and undisturbed bed all my own. I need it badly. I need all telephones to be thrown
down the nearest well. That"s what I need.
All these thoughts fly round my head as I drive my Mini(微型汽车) through the foggy streets of
East London at 3:45 am on a December morning. I am a ministering angel in a Mini with a heavy coat
and a bag of medicines. As I speed down Lea Bridge in the dark at this horrible morning hour, the heater
first blowing hot then cold, my back aching from the car seat, I do not feel like a ministering angel. I
wish I were on the beach in southern France. Call me a bad doctor if you like. Call me what you will.
But don"t call me at half past three on a December morning for an earache that you have had for two
weeks.
Of course,  being a doctor isn"t really all bad. We_do_have_our_moments. Once in a while people
are ill, once in a while you can help, once in a while you are given a cup of tea and rockhard cake at
two o"clock in the morning-then you worry if you have done everything. But all too often "everything" is
a repetitious rule: look,  listen, feel, tap, pills, injection,  phone, ambulance and away to the next.
And then there is always the cool, warm voice of the girl on the switchboard of the emergency bed
service who will get your patient into hospital for you-the pleasant voice that comes to you as you stand
in the cold, dark, smelly and dirty telephone box somewhere in a dangerous section of town. Oh,  it has
its moments, and this life does.

C. He hates the telephone as a modern means of communication.
D. He is not happy with the small and uncomfortable car he is driving.
3. The statement “We do have our moments.” could best be replaced by “________.”
A. We doctors are called at a moment’s notice to see people who need medical treatment

D. There are chances that doctors find their work rewarding and satisfying
