to protect yourself. There are a couple of suggestions you would like to know before you are out for
dating.
Do not go out for dating with somebody whom you have seen only a few times and does not know
much about him or her.
Before leaving on a date, know the exact plans for the evening and make sure a parent or friend
knows these plans and what time to expect you home. Let your date know that you are expected to
call or tell that person when you get in.
Similarly, if you leave a party with someone you do not know well, make sure you tell another person
you are leaving and with whom. Ask a friend to call and make sure you arrive home safely.
No matter how good the person appears to you, trust your inner instincts(直感). If a situation makes
you uncomfortable, try to stay calm and think of a way to remove yourself from the situation without
letting your date realize what is going on in your mind.
Always stay firm, straightforward and clear in your relationships, thoughts, decisions and judgments.
Never let a doubt come to your mind or face when out for dating. If you are firm and clear in your
communication, your date will always be careful in dealing with you.
You should think ahead about ways to be safe if you are in a dangerous or potentially(潜在)
dangerous relationship. Adults, like parents, teachers, counselors, can be trusted in such cases.

of her while a groomer(美容师)tried to trim(修剪)its claws.
Calls and emails came from as far away as the Upper Peninsula and Arizona as well as Oakland and
Macomb counties, offering Laurie Crouch, who uses a wheelchair because of multiple sclerosis(硬化症), everything from dogs to money, such as that from Jason Daly of Roseville who said, "I would like
to buy her a new dog."
A story about the death of Crouch"s pet, Gooch, was printed on the front page of Macomb Daily.
Crouch said a groomer tied Gooch up with a collar, and then she and a man sat on the dog to trim its
nails. Gooch died after one claw was trimmed.
Crouch yelled at the groomer to stop when she saw Gooch was struggling to breathe, but she said
she was ignored. "If I could have walked, I would have put my hands on her and pulled her off my dog
and physically stopped her, but I can"t do that." Gooch was not a trained service animal, but naturally
helped Crouch by picking up things for her.
"This case is absolute animal abuse(虐待)," Larry Obrecht, division manager of the Oakland County
Animal Shelter in Auburn Hills, said.
People who read the story contacted Oakland Press to offer help. A message, from Rebecca
Amett of Giggles N Wiggles Puppy Rescue in Roseville, said, "We have puppies to donate…and want
to help the young woman who lost her service dog."
"When Gooch was with me I was happy," Crouch said, "I think I can be happy again but no animal
can replace Gooch. There"s never going to be another Gooch out there but I think I will find a dog that
can bring me joy again."
B. A cruel groomer killed a disabled woman"s dog.
C. People"s love for a disabled woman who lost her dog.
D. A disabled woman loves to have the dog as company.
B. offer help and care to Laurie Crouch
C. tell Crouch how to punish the groomer
D. offer a cure for Crouch"s disease
B. the groomer didn"t know how to trim the dog"s nails
C. the groomer sat on the dog with another man
D. the dog was wearing a collar
B. It was trained to do many things for people.
C. It was Crouch"s only friend.
D. It could offer some help to Crouch.
we wish to make a number of complaints concerning the serious delay in delivery and your failure to
carry out our instructions regard to this order.
It was firmly pointed out from the beginning that the delivery date had to be less than six weeks
from the original order in order to satisfy our own customers" requirements. While we understand tha
t delays in production are occasionally unavoidable, we must point out that the major reason why the
order was placed with your company was that we were assured by you of its simplicity, and that your
existing stocks were sufficiently high to ensure immediate shipment. Late delivery of the goods has
caused us to disappoint several of our most valued customers, and will have an unfavorable effect on
future orders.
The second complaint concerns the difference in colour between the watches we ordered and those
delivered. It was stated clearly in the order that watches in combinations of green/purple and orange/
purple only were required. However, only half the watches in the delivery received are of the colours
specified. Our Hong Kong agent informed you of the importance of following our instructions exactly,
since we consider there to be only a limited market in this country for watches of other colors at the
present time. Any watches that are not of the specified colours will, of course, be returned to you.
We are also somewhat concerned about the rather poor quality of the goods received, since it is
obvious that the watches that finally arrived have been made from not good enough materials and have
been produced to a lower standard than those in the sample. We have also found that a number of the
watches do not appear to be working. Whether the latter problem is due to poor production, or damage
in transportation is not yet clear, but we should like to point out that we feel this matter to be entirely
your fault.
As a result of the above problems, therefore, we feel that the most suitable course of action is to
return to you unpaid any of the goods considered unsatisfactory. We shall also, of course, be forced
to reconsider whether any further orders should be placed with your company.
We look forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
John Smith

D. they had enough ready-made watches to ship
suggests that _______.
B. the company will probably reduce the number of watches to be ordered in the future.
C. the writer is afraid their company might go out of business soon.
D. the company is probably willing to give the manufacturers another chance
B. angry and impolite
C. reasonable but impolite
D. regretful and polite

"Get your hands off me; I have been stolen, "the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has been taken. The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer"s screen and even to set a spoken message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to_give_the_thief_a_piece_of_their_mind. Owners must report their laptop missing by visiting a website, which sends a message to the model: a red and yellow "lost or stolen" sign appears on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version (版本)of the software, users can also send a spoken message. The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it. "One customer sent a message saying, "You are being tracked. I am right at your door."" said Carrie Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program, Retriever. In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. For example, the laptop"s speaker will say "Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, report me now." The Retriever software package, which costs $29. 95 but has a free trial period, has the functions of many security software programs. Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details. If a thief accesses the Internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the Internet service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location. Thousands of laptops are stolen every year from homes and offices, but with the use of laptops increasing, the number stolen while their owners are out has been rising sharply. Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer.
1. The expression "to give the thief a piece of their mind" can be understood as "________".
A. to give the thief an alert mind B. to express the owners" anger to the thief C. to remind the thief of this conscience D. to make the thief give up his mind
2. Different from other security software, Retriever can ________.
A. record the stealing process B. help recognize the lost laptop C. lock down the computer remotely D. send a spoken message
3. One function of the program is that it allows the owner to ________ at a distance.
A. change some access details for switching on the laptop B. turn on the laptop by using the original password C. operate the laptop by means of alternative password D. erase the information kept in the stolen laptop
4. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A. With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year. B. A new software provides a means to reduce laptop theft. C. Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers. D. A new program offers a communication platform with the thief.
