miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited
England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and
wet country, except for the summer months of June to September. This is probably true of the north of
England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that
when people retire from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.
Perhaps the warmest part of the country is thesouthwest, which consists of the countries of Devon and
Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows across the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and
makes the coastal regions of the southwest quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo and many semi-tropical
plants grow well in the southwest of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier
than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because
they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there
will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is
one of England"s most popular holiday areas.

range of attractions and features that every member of the family should enjoy. Many families would say
that the perfect family destination does not exist. After all, what kind of destination offers that much
diversity? However,Gold Coast in Queensland,Australia may be the closest place you can ever find that fits
the bill of the perfect spot for families of every size, with diverse interests.
For one thing, the city of Queensland is known for its amazing beaches. While not as popular as the
beaches in Spain or the Caribbean,Australian beaches still do rank among the best in the world. The beach
es here can prove that.If there are worldclass beaches,it could only mean worldclass accommodations and
amenities(设施).In turn, this means everyone in a family can easily enjoy the beach,as well as a number
of water sports and activities in a safe environment. This is especially important for foreigners, who may not
be so confident of the security and overall atmosphere in other countries.
As for young ones,Gold Coast offers an amazing range of theme parks-the range is so great,in fact, that
it"s amazing how they all exist within the same city.Theme parks include Sea World, the Warner Brothers
Movie World, among several others! What could kids ask for? It"s already as if it is a wonderland. And
adults will surely enjoy the bustling night life in the city, particularly the one in Surfers Paradise. Here, adults

destination one should visit ;it is filled with the best shops from all over the world.

Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of
robotic dogs on old people"s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. "No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated (刺激) ," Edwards points out. " The problem is how we promote (使……成为现实) that, especially for those without friends or help. A
robotic dog could be a solution. "
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who
live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These
old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Then, the
researchers will review the data to detemune if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
"I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice," says a seventy-year-old lady. "When I"m
watching TV, he"ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own. "
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
"At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry (毛茸茸的) ," Beck says. "But it"s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief. "
"Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will
record their masters" blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have
games that can help stimulate older people"s minds. "
B. make lonely old people"s life better
C. find the causes of old people"s loneliness
D. promote the animal-assisted research
B. keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeks

D. analyze the collected information
B. It can help the disabled people.
C. It responds to all the human orders.
D.lt can watch TV with its owner.
B. keep old people active
C. change people"s beliefs
D.look more like real dogs
things have changed and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a numher of scenic spots on the moon, many
hotels have been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the
beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picturewindow. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment(娱乐) of young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven"t yet started to take on heir
(继承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day. But many
foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago,
most of our planet"s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and pests no longer
destroy crops. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work On the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians(素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of
diseases. No one has to be ill any more,
Such would be our life in 2060.

achievement is the result of gruelling hard work and intense practice.Usually athletes say how hard it
is to win the big games. At the opposite end of the spectrum, however,is the fact that losing the big game,
or,in my case, all the games, can be even tougher.
From the spectators’ point of view, last year’s basketball season for my high school team was nothing
short of an embarrassment. And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of,that season had a bigger
impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since.
As a team captain,I knew it probably wouldn’t be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would
lose every game? Of course not.Since six of our top players had graduated,it was clear that we were a
young team who would struggle. The struggle began earlier than expected, though,as our team’s starting
center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks. At some
point, quitting probably passed through every player’s mind, but,in the end,we all stuck it out, vowing to
work even harder.
Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us.Personally,I felt like it was
no longer worth giving my all.I thought,if even the coach doesn’t believe in us,why should I? But just as
my hope began to fade,a teammate called a meeting. He said,“Nobody thinks we’re going to win,and
heck,we may not,but,as teammates and friends,we_owe_it_to_each_other_to_give_it_our_allevery_
game.”
Sure,it was a little cliche (陈旧的),but it was that moment that taught me how to be a leader. It hit me
then that I may have been a captain,but I,like others in my position,certainly didn’t deserve the role.As a
leader you can never quit on the team who looks up to you.It is one thing to be named captain and feel
great and go through the motions, but it is quite another to be a real captain and make sure everyone works to their potential all the time.
I am sure it is great to go through high school without losing and bringing home awards. But in all
honesty,I relish the fact that my team lost every game last year.It may not help me to become a better
basketball player, but it already has made me a better leader, and person.
B.Their coach no longer wanted to instruct them.
C.There were no actual leaders on the team.
D.Most of players lost hope and wanted to quit.
B.make sure everyone goes all out
C.work hard to win the games
D.feel great about his team
that all of them should ________.
B.try their best on the court
C.feel thankful for what they’ve done
D.get together to win every game
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.One can learn something from the failure.
D.A real leader should never give up.
