ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and
teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and enjoyment in work. Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village. Some learn to
make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills.
There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the
teenagers learn photo-taking or painting. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his
own way to spend his free time.
When people live together, rules are necessary. In this program, the teenagers and the adults make
the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it
and ask, "Why did it happen? What should we do about it?"
One of the teenagers has this to say about the experience, "You stop thinking only about yourself. You
learn how to think about the group."

the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes you really need. Then look for those
clothes on sale.
There are labels(标签) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes.
The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash in cold
water. The label on a coat may say "dry clean only", for washing may ruin this coat. If you do as the
directions (说明)on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best for a long time.
Many clothes today must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check
to see if they will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed.
You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look
good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not necessarily
(不一定) better made. They do not always fit better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive clothes.
B. don"t last long
C. need to be dry cleaned
D. can be washed
B. how to save money
C. whether they fit you or not
D. where to get them dry cleaned
B. to see how much money you can spend on it

I have been using the Internet since I was five years old, when my dad first sat me down in front of a
computer and connected me the World Wide Web.
I"ve always felt like a master(主人) of the Internet world. AOL Instant Messaging, MSN, Gmail,
Facebook. Myspace-I"ve got it all under control. I thought there was nothing more to it besides checking my e-mail and wasting my time, until I was introduced to electronic commerce(e-commerce): business on
the Internet.
Some online business are run from one- room home offices. Others have hundreds of employee(雇员)
spread across five different continent. Have you ever heard of Amazon. com, Yahoo. com?
My friends often said they got cheap textbooks off Amazon.com, or had a good deal(交易)on Steve Madden boots that were on sale at SteveMaden.com. Unfortunately for me, I continued my
"e-commerceless" Web-surfing, unaware(不知道)of all the deals I was missing out on.
That is, of course, until my sister finally sold the idea to me.
"Why are all these packages(包裹)arriving in the mail for you, Katy?" I asked her one day. Strange
envelopes had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister; and we all know little sisters should never be getting more mail than their elders!
"Oh, it"s the things I ordered online!" she answered. I watched speechlessly as she opened them. There was no way our parents were letting her spend that much money- online or off!
"How much did all of this coat?"
"Oh, only about $15 in all!" She said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It"s way better than
going to the mall."
I felt as if there had been a store right in my backyard that I had never walked into! That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for my summer course online for 10 percent of the publishing price. A few
days later, I bought an iPod protector and a book or two via the wonderful eBay.com.
B. had no idea of what e-commerce is
C. only used the Internet to check e-mail
D. thought surfing the Internet was a waste of time
B. he visited a store in his backyard
C. his friends told him about the online deals they made
D. his sister explained the packages she got by mail
B. loves the big store in her backyard
C. feels she is a true master of the Internet
D. never enjoyed shopping that much
B. To do business on the Internet.
C. To tell the readers how he begins online shopping.
D. To advise people not to do online shopping

discovering evidence that billions of years ago the Red planet hosted life.
The lake, which dates back some 3.4 billion years, appears to have covered as much as 80
square miles and was up to 1,500 feet deep, said the team from the University of Colorado.
"This is the first clear evidence of shorelines on the surface of Mars,"said Boulder" s research
associate, Gaetano Di Achille, in a study published in the latest edition of Geophysical Research
Letters.
"The identification of the shorelines and accompanying geological evidence allows us to calculate
the size and volume of the lake, which appears to have formed about 3.4 billion years ago."
Analysis of the images has shown the water carved out the canyon (溪谷) in which it was found,
which then opened out into a valley depositing (使淤积) sediment (沉积) which formed a delta
(三角洲).
"Finding shorelines is a great discovery to us," said assistant professor Brian Hynek, adding it
showed the lake existed at a time when Mars was thought to have been cold and dry.
Scientists believe the oldest surfaces on Mars formed during the wet and warm era known as the
Noachan epoch, about 4.1 billion to 3.7 billion years ago.
The newly discovered lake is believed to date from the Hesperian era and postdates the end of the
warm and wet period on Mars by 300 million years, according to the study.
Scientists believe deltas next to the lake may well hold secrets about past life on Mars as such places
on Earth have become the natural deposits of organic carbon and other markers of life.
1. The size of the lake found on Mars is ______.
A. 80 square miles
B. 1,500 square miles
C. 3.4 billion square miles
D. 300 million square miles
2. When the lake existed, the weather on Mars was ____.
A. hot and wet
B. wet and warm
C. cold and dry
D. cold and wet
3. Why do scientists think deltas near the lake may hold secrets about past life on Mars?
A. Because similar places on Earth have become natural deposits of markers of life.
B. Because someone has put secrets about past life on Mars there.
C. Because past life has been found in other deltas on Mars.
D. Because some people are said to have already seen life marks there.
4. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The Noachan epoch was a wet and warm era.
B. The lake might have existed 3.4 billion years.
C. The discovery can" t fully prove that the Mars once hosted life.
D. The lake traces prove that there exists life on Mars now.
Are you truly happy? Do you ever know what it means to be happy and what it takes to achieve
happiness? 1 . The following are a few tips that I follow to create happiness in my life.
Make a plan for attaining goals that you believe will make you happy. Your moods will very likely
increase if you are going after something you value.
Surround yourself with happy people. It is easy to begin to think negatively when you are surrounded
by people who think that way. 2 .
When something goes wrong, try to figure out a solution instead of being absorbed in self pity. Truly
happy people don" t allow setbacks to affect their mood because they know that with a little thought they
can turn the circumstances back to their favor.
3 . These few minutes will give you the opportunity to focus on the positive things in your life and
will lead you to continuous happiness.
4 . Whether you treat yourself to lunch, take a long, relaxing bath or simply spend a few extra
minutes on your appearance, you will be subconsciously (下意识地) putting yourself in a better mood.
Finding the humor in situations can also lead to happiness. Find a way to make light of a situation that
would otherwise make you happy.
Keeping healthy is another way to achieve happiness. 5 .
A. What makes one person happy may be very different from what makes someone else happy.
B. On the contrary, if you are around people who are happy, their emotional state will be infectious.
C. Being overweight or not eating nutritious foods can have a negative effect on your mood.
D. These are important questions for anyone who is seeking happiness to ask themselves.
E. Spend a few minutes each day thinking about the things that make you happy.
F. There are some tips in life that lead to happiness.
G. It" s also important to take some time each day to do something nice for yourself.
