阅读理解     If you travel to a new exhibit at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances
to see some meateating plants. Take bladderworts (狸藻类植物), a kind of such plant, for example.
They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. "But these are the fastestknown killers of the plant
kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door! "
Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes (酶) similar to those in the human stomach
slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.
Meateating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn"t offer much food value. In such
conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands
of years. North America has more such plants than any other continents.
Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants,
which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar
(花蜜).
The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive halfclosed lid. Curious insects
are tempted to come close and take a sip, and then slide down the slippery (光滑的) slope to their
deaths.
Hairlike growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing can escape, and the digestive enzymes
can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days.
Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons. Meateating plants only eat people in science
fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn"t a good
place to get a drink.1. From the first paragraph, we learn that bladderworts can________.A. kill an insect in a second
B. capture an insect in 1/50 of a second
C. be found floating on a quiet lake
D. digest a fly in a few hours2. If the trap door of a meateating plant is closed, the plant is________.A. fooling insects into taking a sip
B. producing nectar
C. tempting insects to come close
D. enjoying a dinner3. Meateating plants can grow in wet and poor soil because they________.A. can get nutrition from animals
B. don"t need much food value
C. can make the most of such conditions
D. have developed digestive enzymes4. What can be captured by meateating plants for food?A. A child.
B. A dog.
C. A little bird.
D. A little fish.

The breathless pace of everyday life made many people sleepless, said our reporter Wang Ling,
when talking about the World Sleep Day (WSD)with sleep experts in order to find out how to get a
better sleep.
Cui Shuliang, founder of 51sleep.com, which provides online advice for those yearning for a sound
sleep, found many of his workmates suffering badly from poor sleep quality, as an IT technician in
earlier times. "Each morning, I would hear complaints from someone that kept waking up during the
night, or someone else who had to spend all night fighting for sleep."
Pressed by busy city life, more and more people are suffering from sleep problems ranging from
insomnia to narcolepsy (嗜眠症). Some people may be able to fall asleep, but spend the whole time in
fear. A survey conducted by the Sleep Research Society (SRS) shows that about 40% of the population
is troubled by sleep disorders, which can result in lowered awareness and less productive days. Serious
insomnia can even lead to psychiatric problems.
Professor Zhang Xi, director of the organization, says the focus of this year"s World Sleep Day will
be on scientific ways to sleep. Professor Zhang Xi explained that the causes of sleep disorders differ
among cases, but more than 80% of his patients had trouble in sleeping because they always have a
nervous worried feeling that makes it impossible for them to relax. "That"s why we keep suggesting
people pay more attention to sleep problems, since there remains a hidden danger in the physical and
mental condition. On the other hand, people with sleep problems should learn how to ease their mind
and relax themselves. Staying mentally and physically healthy, plus having healthy habits, is the best
way to realize a sound sleep."
1. What do we know about Cui Shuliang according to the text?
A. He founded a website with the help of his friends.

2. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Most people cannot have a good sleep.
B. Most sleep problems are caused by fear.
C. Sleep disorders can lead to serious results.
D. The SRS is an organization of 51sleep.com.
3. According to Professor Zhang Xi,we know that ________.
A. the WSD"s focus is on the importance of sleep this year
B. people have paid enough attention to sleep problems
C. keeping in good health is necessary for a good sleep
D. different sleep problems have the same cause
4. Most of Professor Zhang Xi"s patients have difficulty in sleeping because of ________.
A. stress
B. excitement
C. noise
D. fear
5. The underlined word "sound"in the second paragraph means"________".
A. light and long
B. quick and dreamful
C. heavy and short
D. deep and peaceful
In 2008 and 2009 I published two articles researching a lull (停歇)in solar activity. At the time, there
appeared to be some disagreement among scientists as to what effect this might have on humancaused
global warming. Now climate scientists agree a less active sun won"t have much of an effect.
According to the reports from the IPCC, global climate is expected to warm between 4 and 10
degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2100. On the other hand, scientists show that  the reduction in radioactive
forcing due to low solar activity would reduce world temperature half a degree F if the lull in solar activity
lasted until the end of the 21 century.
It is highly unlikely the current lull in solar activity  would have such a long period. "It is more likely that a new lull in solar activity would reduce the global temperature average of 0.2 Celsius by the end of
2100," commented Professor Stefan Rahmstorf, who was responsible for a study of a lull in solar activity
effects on climate at the Institute for Research on the Impacts of Climate Change in Potsdam.
In short, this small forcing is likely to have little, if any, observable effect on humancaused global
warming,at most reducing the temperature increase to between 3.5 and 9.5 degrees F. The reason for
the small effect on temperature is due to the fact that the difference between solar activity highs and lows
changes solar output by less than one half of one percent. So the difference in the amount of energy
coming out of the sun between solar highs and lows isn"t very large. The result is that the human forcing
on climate is many times larger than that caused by any natural difference in the sun.
Generally if humancaused climate_change isn"t controlled it can"t be stopped by natural changes in the
sun.
1. What once caused the argument among scientists?
A. The reduction in world temperature.
B. That humans are responsible for global warming.
C. That humans are stronger than nature.
D. Whether the lull in solar activity has effect on humancaused global warming.
2. According to scientists, world temperature would fall a little if ________.
A. less CO2 is given off
B. more trees are planted
C. redioactive forcing becomes strong
D. the lull in solar activity lasts a long period
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The author is expert at writing science fiction.
B. The current lull in solar activity will last very long.
C. The power of humans is stronger than the sun on global warming.
D. The IPCC reported that world  temperature would fall greatly.
4. What do the underlined words "climate change" refer to?
A. The flood.
B. Global warming.
C. The earthquake.
D. Global environmental change.
5. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The effect of global warming.
B. An argument among scientists.
C. That humans are a cause of global warming.
D. That a less active sun cannot stop global warming.

More and more people are coming under the umbrella of fatness in modern times. Not just adults, but
even children are getting overweight. Today some of the newborn babies are also born fat. It has been
proved that the people living in the developed Western countries are more likely to become overweight.
There are a number of causes behind this.
The people in the developed countries including the United States almost enjoy all the comforts of life. Almost all the things in the lives of the people living in these countries are at their fingertips. A very limited
amount of movement and physical effort is required to do any kind of job. Because of the fact that these
countries are quite developed, most of the jobs that the people take up are desk jobs. So the lifestyle of
them is just around the office desk.
Most of the developed Western countries are cold ones. Nature demands that people eat the food
that can somehow make them stand the coldness. Therefore, wine fatty dairy products, bread, junk food
and red meat become an important diet in these countries.
However, the blame cannot be entirely put on the unhealthy eating habits of the people. Technology
allows them to import almost all the foods products that they do not grow. Although some healthy food
are grown in the countries nowadays, the quantity is very limited. It is not enough to meet the demand.
So when they are not available and fatty foods are cheaper, then people prefer to go for the eating habit
that they have always been following.

A. physical
B. management

B. gene(基因)
C. education
D. weather
3. The underlined word in Paragraph 4 refers to________.
A. the healthy foods
B. the people in the developed countries
C. the fatty foods
D. the unhealthy eating habits
4. The purpose of the author in writing the text is to________.
A. warn people of their bad eating habits in the developed countries
B. remind people of the relation between food and weight gain
C. inform people of the causes of weight gain in the developed countries
D. tell people that fatness in the developed countries is natural
5. People in the developed countries often________.
A. carry umbrellas with them
B. blame the fatness on the weather
C. grow a lot of healthy foods in their countries
D. eat to protect themselves from the cold
