and so the film industry there is called "Bollywood". Bollywood makes twice as many movies each year as
Hollywood-more than 800 films a year.
2. _______ For one thing. Bollywood movies are much longer than most Hollywood movies. Most
Bollywood movies are more than three hours long, and contain singing, dancing, action, adventure, mystery,
and romance. Because Bollywood films contain so many different features, this style of film is sometimes
called a "masala" film.("Masala" is an Indian word for a mixture of spices.)
3. _______ It takes much longer to make a movie in Hollywood than in Bollywood. In fact, filming may
begin on a Bollywood movie before the script (剧本) is even finished. The director and writer can make up
the story while the film is being made. 4. _______
Bollywood actors are very popular and some are in such high demand that they may work on several
movies at the same time. 5. _______ Since most Bollywood movies follow the same kind of story, shooting
scenes for several films at the same time is not a big problem for actors or directors. This also helps keep
the cost of Bollywood movies lower than the cost of Hollywood movies. The average Bollywood film, with

Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time
eating, sleeping and crying. As you grow older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more
time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously. You began to know that people
made certain sounds to go with certain things.
Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right
sound for one thing.
On that day yon came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a
certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees
on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each
other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE.
After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as
BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM. And other words
describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express one"s idea,

to them. So if your American or English friend asks you to dinner, he usually invites you a week ahead. But if
you really have no time and can"t go to the dinner, you can ring him to say sorry. The dinner is usually served
at home, sometimes at a restaurant. You should get there on time, and don"t forget to put on your fine clothes.
It is also a good idea to take some little presents to your friend, such as flowers, chocolates and so on. When
you are at dinner, you should also observe (遵守) some other customs. Here I"ll give you some dos and don"ts
about them in the following:
1) Don"t leave bones on the table or the floor. (You should put them on your plate with fingers.)
2) Don"t use your bowl to drink soup, but use your spoon to help you instead.

that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian
emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was
Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahan, means "pride of the palace". In the year 1630 this beloved wife
of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided out of his
love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design
was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj
Mahan, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 meters square and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from
each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made
of white marble.
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river
connected by a silver bridge. However his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and
for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.

go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this
or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour (剌耳的; 拙劣的) music, indeed, but it has to be faced.
The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old.
Where did the expression come from?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the
expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their clue (提示,
暗示) to go on, they often said, "It"s time to go to face the music." And that is exactly what they did-face the
orchestra (管弦乐队) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be
friendly or perhaps unfriendly especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music"
came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because
you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection (视察) by their leader. The soldiers
worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean-shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men
had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?
B. something unpleasant to be experienced
C. your leader"s inspection
D. sour pop music
B. the American writer James Fennimore cooper
C. some American actors
D. the American orchestra
B. to be found weak
C. to show themselves up in public
D. to be inspected by their leader
B. how to deal with something unpleasant
C. how to learn English phrase
