任务型读写。
From the beginning of human history, people have used oils from seeds and nuts. Most of the time
these oils are used as food, especially in cooking. But sometimes they have other uses. For example, oils
are used in paint and in cleaning products like soap.
Oils are separated from seeds by using pressure.A machine called a press is often used.
The first step in pressing the oil from seeds is to crush the seeds between two stones. The crushed
seeds are then put into a cloth bag and the bag is hung up.Some of the oil will flow out of the bag and
can be collected.
But some oils will remain in the crushed seeds inside the bag.The easiest way to get the rest of the oil
out is to place heavy rocks on the crushed material.
Another method is to place several cloth bags on top of each other in a box. Then a long wooden stick
is used to slowly push a heavy cover down on the bags.Great pressure is produced in this way.Much
greater pressure can be produced by using a machine, a hydraulic jack (液压千斤顶). The greater the
pressure is, the more oils will be produced.
Small presses are important in areas where electricity or gasoline cannot be used. They are also a good
way to test if a local market for oils exists.
Small batch presses can be made of local materials.Their cost is low. They are not difficult to operate.
And they are easy to repair. The small presses produce good quality oils. But the work is hard. And getting
all the oil from the seeds can be difficult.
If there is a large supply of seeds, then handoperated presses may not be enough to support a business.
Large powered presses that can operate all day are needed.

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize
others, as they are similar to or different from it.And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way
of life of other countries is often a distorted (扭曲的) one.
Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling
in a country and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and
its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be
from the secondhand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners
whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!
Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so.The
world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity (快速) and
ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However
this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed (展示) to more people than ever before
that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not:some different kind of animal from themselves.

A. differences between peoples will gradually disappear because of the ease of travel
B. differences between peoples do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alike
C. differences between peoples will continue to exist and the world will be a dull place
D. differences between peoples will not exist as one hopes
The wellknown Rushmore National Monument in the United States is built on the Rush Moore Peak,
1829 meters above sea level, of the Black Hills in the south-west of South Dakota. It is a group of huge
stone statues of four American presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and
Theodore Roosevelt. President Washington is the founding father of the country; the 3rd President
Jefferson drafted the US Declaration of Independence; the 16th President Lincoln issued the

eyes. Though not facing the same direction, they are all lifelike and look ahead gravely in harmony with
fixed gazes. On clear days, one can have a sight of the four presidents with their firm and steady
expression at a distance of dozens of kilometers.

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched (草盖的) roof cottages around a church;  a
drive through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight over
the rolling hills of a pretty collection of thatched farm buildings-these are still common sights in parts of
England. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English
countryside.
Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts practiced in the British Isles(英伦诸岛).
Although thatch has always been used for cottage and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and
churches too.
Thatching is a solitary (独立的) craft, which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is
practiced today has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are employed
in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses.
Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know it will keep them
cool in summer and warm in winter.
In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in
different ways. People in developing countries are often reluctant to go back to traditional materials and
would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import the necessary materials. Their temporary mud huts with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months.
Thatch which has been done the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective defiance
against the heat.

A. It is a collective activity.

D. It is in most cases handed down among family members.

A.  their style and comfort

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother"s Day? Cards, flowers, sales,
TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it ---- those are what probably come to
mind for many people when they think of Mother"s Day. But there"s more to the story.
The earliest Mother"s Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations
honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600"s, England celebrated a day called Mothering
Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake
was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother"s Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous
song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn"t really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis stared a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers
could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil
War. The US isn"t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark,
Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries
honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother"s Day and celebrating Mother"s Day are important, but probably not as
important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you.
And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

D. The great contribution of mothers.

2. Where was the earliest Mother"s Day celebrated?

A. In ancient Greece.
B. In the US.

A. Rhea is the mother of a king in ancient Greece
B. not all the countries celebrate Mother"s Day in May
C. only mothers were given a day off on Mothering Sunday
D. it was in 1872 that Mother"s Day really came into being

4. The last paragraph tells us that _____.

A. all the people should celebrate Mother"s Day
B. only mothers are honored on Mother"s Day
C. understanding mothers" work is more important than just celebrating Mother"s Day
D. people should celebrate Mother"s Day every day
