At a certain time in our lives we consider every place as the possible site for a house. I have thus searched the country within a dozen miles of where I live. In imagination I have bought all the farms, one after another, and I knew their prices.
The nearest thing that I came to actual ownership was when I bought the Hollowell place. But before the owner completed the sale with me, his wife changed her mind and wished to keep it, and he offered me additional dollars to return the farm to him. However, I let him keep the dollars and sold him the farm for just what I gave for it.
The real attractions of the Hollowell farm to me were its position, being about two miles from the village, half a mile from the nearest neighbor, bounded(相邻) on one side by the river, and separated from the highway by a wide field. The poor condition of the house and fences showed that it hadn’t been used for some time. I remembered from my earliest trip up the river that the house used to be hidden behind a forest area, and I was in a hurry to buy it before the owner finished getting out some rocks, cutting down the apple trees, and clearing away some young trees which had grown up in the fields. I wanted to buy it before he made any more of his improvements. But it turned out as I have said.
I was not really troubled by the loss. I had always had a garden, but I don’t think I was ready for a large farm. I believe that as long as possible it is better to live free and uncommitted(无牵无挂). It makes but little difference whether you own a farm or not.
57.What do we know about the author?
A. He wanted to buy the oldest farm near where he lived.
B. He made a study of many farms before buying.
C. He made money by buying and selling farms.
D. He had the money to buy the best farm in the country.
58.Why did the author want to buy the farm in a hurry?
A. He was afraid the owner might change his mind.
B. He hoped to enlarge the forest on the farm.
C. He wanted to keep the farm as it was.
D. He was eager to become a farm owner.
59.The underlined words “the loss” in the last paragraph refer to _____?
A. the money the author lost in buying the farm
B. the sale of the garden in the Hollowell place
C. the removal of the trees around the house
D. the failure to possess the Hollowell place
60.What does the author believe as important in life?
A. To own a farm B. To satisfy his needs
C. To be free from worries. D. To live in the countryside.

Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment (评价):
(l)
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades (学习成绩). Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common. Grades often hold back creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports. Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability. I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on. grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional(可选择的) at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith, President
Drama Club
(2)
Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions( 功能). First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence (能力 ). Second, they act as an encouragement for hard-working students and as a warming to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students" achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.
I"ve spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent, person’s intelligence is fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随意地) from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We should soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

A mosquito is an insect that is found all over the world. There are thousands of different kinds of mosquitoes in many different sizes and colors. The female mosquito needs blood from vertebrates (脊椎动物)to lay eggs and produce more mosquitoes. She has a special part of her mouth that she uses to suck blood, and her saliva(spit)thins the blood so she can drink it.In fact. It’s the mosquito’s saliva that makes the bites itch(痒)!
A person who gets bitten by a mosquito will notice a wheal, which is a bump around the bite.
The wheal will be round, with pink or red around the edge and white in the middle. The wheal will
itch a lot.Soon the wheal will disappear, but the itch will stay.
If you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, wash the bite with soap and water.Put on some calamine lotion to help stop the itching,or an adult can find an anti-itch cream at the drugstore for you.Placing an ice pack on the bite may also help.Tell an adult you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, especially if you live in the eastern United States. But if you develop an allergic reaction and feel dizzy or sick, tell a doctor immediately. He can treat allergic reactions with sole medicine.
The best way to avoid mosquito bites is to wear an insect repellent.Repellents that include one of these ingredients are best:BEET and lemon eucalyptus.Ask a parent to help you apply them.
Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in water,it’s also a good idea to empty out buckets, flower pots, toys and other things in your yard that may have collected water during a rainstorm. And when it’s possible, you’d better wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
