From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space
stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far,we have
achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not
cease trying to progress.
The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration.
It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many
experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time.It is also a base for the observations
of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travels to the
moon and Mars.In a word,if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do
is to set up a space station.
As the space station costs a lot of money,it is hard for one country alone to establish
one.The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone,
and it has tried to do so,but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to
work on it together.Though it is still extremely expensive,it is much cheaper than doing it
alone. It is really a job that needs everyone"s effort and will benefit everyone.
But even so,the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the USA,it seems that it has
too many things to spend its money on.Although it is the richest country in the world,it has
much debt every year.It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance
in all these issues.

international space station?A.That it requires a lot of money.
B.That it needs everyone"s effort.

Young athletes from around the world will soon get their chance at Olympic gold. The International
Olympic Committee ( IOC ) voted Thursday to host the first-ever Youth Olympics.
The Summer Games are planned to stage in August of 2010. The 12-day competition will feature
3,200 kids between the ages of 14 and 18. The Winter Games will be held in 2012 and are expected to
attract 1,000 athletes. Both games will take place every four years.

sports like the X Games, which stand for such sports as BMX freestyle, surfing, and Moto X Racing.
The Olympics have tried to keep up with the competition by adding BMX-cross cycling, ski cross,
and snowboarding to the program. And the IOC is hoping to strengthen its fame among teens by adding
skateboarding in the 2012 London Olympics.

Since the 1970s,scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers.
Braincomputer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands
to machines.
Recently, two researchers,Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic
School in Lausanne,Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by
a person"s thoughts.
In the laboratory,Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or
right hand.He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
"Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓)to
the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can
prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,"Tavella says."Our system
allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices."
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals
from the scalp(头皮)and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and
commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects
in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof.Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that
interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands."The practical possibilities that
BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories:communication,
and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair."
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients,so as to prove that this
is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the
technology over long periods of time.

1.BCI is a technology that can ________.A.help to update computer systems
B.link the human brain with computers
C.help the disabled to recover
D.control a person"s thoughts2.How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?A.By controlling his muscles.
B.By talking to the machine.
C.By moving his hand.
D.By using his mind.3.Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?A.scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair
B.computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair
C.scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair
D.cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair4.The team will test with real patients to ________.A.make profits from them
B.prove the technology useful to them
C.make them live longer
D.learn about their physical condition5.Which of the following would be the BEST title for the text?A.Switzerland, the BCI Research Center
B.New Findings about How the Human Brain Works
C.BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

阅读理解     This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.
Its formal, serious style closely matches its content, a schoolmasterly book on schooling. The author, W. H. Armstrong, starts with the basics: reading and writing. In his opinion, reading doesn"t just mean
recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting it and incorporating it
into oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself. The goal is to bring the
information back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees. Reading and writing
cannot be completely separated from each other; in fact, the aim of reading is to express the information
you have got from the text. I"ve seen it again and again:someone who can"t express an idea after reading
a text is just as ineffective as someone who hasn"t read it at all.
Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for
studying languages, math, science and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly(透彻地)
and equally, except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion
(激情) regarding history. Well, he was a history teacher-if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his
students, that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across. To my disappointment,
in this part of the book he ignores the arts. As a matter of fact, they demand all the concentration and
study that math and science do, though the study differs slightly in kind. Although it"s commonly believed
that the arts can only be naturally acquired, actually, learning the arts is no more natural than learning
French or mathematics.
My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s-none of the
references(参考文献) seem newer than the late 1950s.As a result, the discussion misses the entire
computer age.
These are small points, though, and don"t affect the main discussion. I recommend it to any student
and any teacher, including the selftaught student.                  1. According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to________.A. gain knowledge and expand one"s view
B. understand the meaning between the lines
C. express ideas based on what one has read
D. get information and keep it alive in memory2. The author of the passage insists that learning the arts____.A. requires great efforts
B. demands real passion
C. is less natural than learning maths
D. is as natural as learning a language3. What is a shortcoming of Armstrong"s work according to the author?A. Some ideas are slightly contradictory.
B. There is too much discussion on studying science.
C. The style is too serious.
D. It lacks new information.4. This passage can be classified as________.A. an advertisement
B. a book review
C. a feature story
D. a news report
