sleeping and eating than anyone else among the world"s wealthy nations, according to a study
published on Monday.
The average French person sleeps almost nine hours every night, more than an hour longer
than Japanese and Korean, who sleep the least in a survey of 18 members of the Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).Despite their siesta(午睡)habit,Spaniards
rank only third in the poll after Americans, who sleep more than 8.5 hours.
And while more and more French people grab a bite at fast-food chains these days or,wolf
down a sandwich at their desk, they still spend more than two hour"s a day eating.
That means their meals are twice as long as those of the average Mexican, who dedicates just
over an hour a day to food, the OECD"s "Society at a Glance" report on work, health and leisure
in Asia,Europe and North and South America found. The Japanese, scrimping (吝啬) on sleep
and burdened with long working hours, still manage to spend close to two hours a day eating and
drinking, placing them third behind New Zealanders.
Despite the limited amount of time Americans spend eating each day-about an hour and a
quarter-U.S. obesity肥胖) rates are the highest in the 30 members of OECD.
The Japanese like to spend what remains of their rare free time watching television or listening
to the radio. This takes up 47 percent of leisure time in Japan. Norwegians spend the most time at
leisure, just over a quarter of their day, while at the low end,Mexicans spend just 16 percent of their
time having fun.
The OECD has 30 members. The survey covers only the countries for which appropriate figures

homes. At the same time about 1,300 American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new
languages and learn the rest of the world.
Here is a 2-way student exchange in action. Fred,19, spent last year in Germany with George"s
family. In turn, George"s son Mike spent a year in Fred"s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after 2 months of studying,
the language became easy for him. School was completely different from what he had expected
and it was much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took
14 subjects instead of 6 that were usually taken in the US.
Family life, too, was different. The father"s word was the law. All the activities were done with
the family rather than individually. Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed
having a car.
"Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time.In Germany,
you walk but you soon learn to like it ."
At the same time, in America, Mike,a friendly German boy, was also forming his own ideas.
"I suppose I should criticize American schools" he says, "It is far too easy for our level but I have
to say that I like it a lot. In Germany, we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many other
activities. I think that maybe American schools are better in training their citizens. There ought to
be some middle ground between the two."

officials in rural areas to both improve rural administration and ease the city"s employment problems.
The government plans to recruit 3,000 university graduates this year, 1,000 more than last year, to
work as assistants to village heads or Party secretaries in suburban areas.
People interested in jobs in Beijing"s rural villages and townships can submit applications to the
Beijing Municipal Personnel Bureau or online at www. Bjbys.com from February 1 through March 15.
"We hope university graduates will seize this opportunity to use their knowledge in rural villages and
to start their careers," Sun Zhenyu, deputy director of Beijing Personnel Bureau, told Xinhua News
Agency.
The government has promised successful candidates a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan( $ 250) in the
first year, 2,500 yuan ($ 320) the second year and 3,000 yuan ($ 385) the third year, provided their
performance is up to the required standards, Sun said.
Wang Lina, who graduated from Beijing Union University last year, was one of the first graduates
to find work in the city"s countryside. After majoring in industrial and commercial administration, Wang
served as the assistant to the village head of Ertiaojie Village in suburban Beijings Pinggu District. For
one project, Wang contacted people at the Beijing Academy of Agricultural Sciences and arranged for
the local farmers to receive training in strawberry planting. Her efforts paid off. The village had a plentiful
harvest of organic strawberries earlier this year.
Nationwide, about 150,000 university graduates found employment in rural areas last year, according
to figures provided by the Ministry of Education.
The ministry predicts that 4. 95 million students will graduate from universities across the country this
year, 820,000 more than last year. About 1.4 million of them are unlikely to find jobs when they graduate.
In Beijing, a record 200,000 people are expected to graduate from university this year. Less than half

the advertising aimed at them. It claims to provide visitors with an "education" through games
and other entertainment.
A cartoon man dressed in old time pilot clothing greets visitors to Admongo. "Call me Haiz",
he says upon arrival in a rocket ship that opens up with a crazy world inside it. Spacey dance
music plays in the background as Haiz tells visitors that they need to learn about advertising.
Its inventors say eight to twelve years old is the age kids d evelop their critical thinking
abilities. Kids that age are also a big market for advertisers.
The idea behind Admongo is to teach children three things: To identify the advertiser. To
know what the advertiser is really saying. And to know what the advertisement is trying to get
the child to do.
Children learn these things through a video game. They create their own game character. They
can choose different skin colors, hair styles, eye and mouth shapes. Then they begin a trip through
ad-land, where there are ads on buses and billboards. The players have to find all the marketing in
the neighborhood before they can move on to the next level.
The Admongo game takes players inside a home, to the advertising studio and everywhere else
ads can be found. It is a complete exploration of the world of marketing.
One such area is food marketing. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says it is a big business.
The FTC estimates that food, drink and fast-food restaurants spent more than one and a half billion
dollars on advertising to young people in 2009.
The FTC says children are important for three reasons. They buy products. They influence
parents and caregivers to buy. And they are the future adult buyers of the products.
A recent study says most advertising aimed at children is for foods of the lowest nutritional value.
First Lady Michelle Obama has said she would like to see advertisers marketing healthy foods for
children.

do the same to the whole body, researchers reported on Monday.
The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, shows that smoking affects the skin all over the
body-even skin protected from the sun.
"We examined non - facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number
of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the
amount of skin damage a person experienced," Dr.Yolanda Helfrich of the University of Michigan, who
led the study, said in a statement.
"In participants older than 65 years, smokers had significantly more fine wrinkling than nonsmokers.
Similar findings were seen in participants aged 45 to 65 years," Helfrich "s team added in their report.
The researchers tested 82 people, smokers and nonsmokers, taking pictures of the inner right arms.
They ranged, in age from 22 to 91 and half were smokers.Independent judges decided how wrinkled
each person" s skin was.
When skin is exposed to sunlight, notably the face, it becomes coarse, wrinkled and discolored with
a pale yellow tint, Helfrich " s team wrote.
Several previous studies have found that cigarette smoking contributes to premature(过早的)skin
aging as measured by facial wrinkles, the study said, but little has been done to measure the aging of
skin not exposed to light.
The report did not discuss die mechanism involved but previous research has found that cigarette
smoke, among other things, causes blood vessels (血管) beneath the skin to constrict (紧缩), reducing
blood supply to the skin.
Smoking can also damage the connective tissue that supports both die skin and the internal organs,.

first book, Eragon, when he was just fifteen!Eragon is selling more copies than most of the Harry Potter
books. A reporter from Who"s News talked to this young author about his books and how he ended up
being one of the best-selling authors of all time!
Reporter : ________
Christopher Paolini (CP): I love fantasy. I love the sense of awe (敬畏) and wonder that you always
get at the end of a great book . Eragon was an attempt to express that. When I was about twelve, I read
a book called Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. It"s about a young boy who went into a mysterious
shop and bought a dragon egg that ends up hatching. It stuck in my head. Eragon was an attempt to see
what I could do with the idea myself.
Reporter : Where else do you get your idea?
CP: I"m definitely influenced by authors who have a fairly inventive use of language, imaginative worlds and a sense of wonder-authors who write about things that other people don"t.
Reporter : What was the hardest thing about writing Eragon?
CP: Probably the editing (编辑) because I wasn"t used to it. It was a kind of shock doing it. But also
I had to learn a huge amount about grammar and commas and other things I"d never paid much attention
to before. I"d say that editing and writing are pretty much equal in difficulty. My raw writing is a lot more
professional now than it ever was before because of everything I learned through the editing process.
Reporter : How do you avoid becoming frustrated with the writing process?
CP: Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most; otherwise you"ll never be
able to survive a book-length project.
Reporter : Anything else you"d like to share with our readers?
CP: Before I wrote Eragon, I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story so I wasn"t writing
blindly. That helps. I really poured my heart and soul into it. It"s not just an adventure story: it is about
Eragon trying to work out who we are, why we are here and how we can live honorably.
B. How long did it take you to write Eragon?
C. How has your writing improved after Eragon?
D. What inspired you to write Eragon?
B. The sense of awe and wonder.
C. An idea.
D. A great book or movie.
B. Grammar and commas.
C. The editing process.
D. The creative use of language.
B. "Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself."
C. "I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story."
D. "I really poured my heart and soul into it."
