the world"s most populous market, Chinese star Yao Ming has retired.
Yao made it official Wednesday, telling a news conference that a series of foot and leg injuries
forced him to end his playing career at the age of 30.
"I will formally end my career," said Yao, who became a household name in China before starting
his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in 2002. Yao played eight seasons in the NBA.
"Today is an important day for me and holds a special meaning for both my basketball career and
my future," Yao said. "I had to leave the court since I suffered a stress fracture(断裂) in my left foot
for the third time at the end of last year. My past six months were a painful wait. I have been thinking
about my future over and over. Today I am announcing a personal decision, ending my career as a
basketball player and officially retire. But_one_door_is_closing_and_another_one_is_opening."
Yao said he would return to work with his former Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks, with the
possibility of becoming general manager. He already owns the club and wants to contribute more.
"My playing career started with the club. I hope I can do something for it," Yao said.
He later appeared with his family on the stage to the applause and cheers of the crowd. He thanked
a lot of people-his family, former coaches, even players like Shaquille O"Neal-"for making me a better
player, I will be always with you. Thank you."
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was among those attending the farewell(告别)conference
Wednesday. Morey made the long trip from Houston. Morey said 20 hours on planes was tiring but
"I would be sorry if I wasn"t here." "It"s a big moment," Morey added. "Yao had a sense of humor, a
great attitude and sense of responsibility. I hope we can continue his culture in the NBA."
Yao had played six years with the Chinese national team before joining the Rockets, and was
already a star in his home country. He carried the Olympic torch through Tian"anmen Square and his

user"s mood.Researchers at Queen"s University in Belfast hope to complete the 10 million Euro
project for an emotionsensitive computer within four years.
The aim is to enable computers to think and behave more like humans. The Europewide project is
being led by the university"s School of Psychology and involves 160 researchers from 27 institutions.
The university"s researchers developed the scheme and signed the contract with the European
Commission. The academics said the work will build upon attempts to create "multimodal interfaces
(多模式界面)" which allow machines to sense and respond to the moods of the user.
Programme leader Professor Roddy Cowie said while it sounds like science fiction, computers
which respond to human emotion will appear in the future."At the moment, our use of computers is
limited by the fact that we need a keyboard and a screen to access them," he said."It would make a
big difference if we could interact with them by speaking normally-perhaps through a microphone and
a transmitter (传感器)." But emotion is part of normal speech, and experience has shown that most
users are deeply uncomfortable with speech interfaces that ignore it-too uncomfortable to use them
very much."If we can make computers more intuitive (富于直觉的) and expressive, and also less
challenging to use, there is great potential to let people make fuller use of information technology."
The emotionsensitive computer would have its own "personality" and establish a social relationship
with the user."It"s a fair bet that in 30 years" time, emotionsensitive interfaces will be as much part of life
as windowandmouse interfaces are now," said Professor Cowie. The project team believes such computers will play a major role in teaching and learning.
B.It can create a 10 million Euro profit.
C.It is led by a Southern Ireland team.
D.It has been completed within four years.
B.Through a keyboard.
C.Through the voice of users.
D.Through multimodal interfaces.

charging multiple portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and laptop
computers without the need for cable connections.
Electric cars users may also eventually be able to charge their vehicles wirelessly using the same
technology, said the company, which developed a sample system at Osaka Prefecture University.
Claiming to be the world"s first of its kind, the technology works on the basis of the transmission of
electricity using magnetic fields between the charger and the electronic device.
The system enables wireless charging at distances of up to several meters. With the final aim of
installing public "charging spots" on the streets in order to enable easy charging around the clock,
scientists at Fujitsu Labs are planning to commercially sell products incorporating the new wireless
charging system as early as 2012 but have not yet decided how much they would cost.
"This technology paves the way to integrating compact wireless charging functions into mobile
phones and enabling multiple portable devices to be charged simultaneously without any restrictions
on their position relating to the charger," the company said in a statement.
Mobile phone users in Japan can currently charge their batteries using the disposable portable
plugin batteryoperated device, available at most train stations and convenience stores. However,
phone companies warn long time use of it can damage the phones.
The company added, "We are also looking at applying the results of this work to fields other
than portable electronics, including power transmission between circuit boards(电路板)or computer
chips, and providing mobile charging systems for electric cars."

woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety. That didn"t stop
the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and
angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.
Parbati Barua"s father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an
elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant roundup-how
to catch wild elephants.
Parbati hasn"t always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent
to a boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went
back to her old life. "Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts
for days after the chase,"she says.
But Parbati doesn"t catch elephants just for fun."My work," she says,"is to rescue man from the
elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man." And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for
many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and
its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild
elephants enter a tea garden or a village,Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before
they can kill.
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend
hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant."Eventually they grow to love their tamers
and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,"she said,as she climbed up one of her
elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

paid parking at public hospitals.
Visitors had been paying up to $5 a day to park at Canberra and Calvary hospitals under the scheme
introduced in September, 2010.
Health Minister Katy Gallagher announced yesterday visitors would no longer pay these fees because
the idea had proved unworkable and unpopular.
The Government would also spend $29 million over two years to build a multistorey car park with 1,
400 spaces at Canberra Hospital. But she could not rule out that visitors would be charged to park in the
new structure.
Ms Gallagher said the Government had listened to the public concerns. "It is clear that, in spite of a
generous policy, many visitors to the hospitals don"t support the present system," she said.
The public would have access to twohour and threehour parking spaces from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm
weekdays.
Opposition spokesman on urban services Steve Pratt congratulated the Government for "adopting"
Liberal policy to put an end to paid parking.
"Finally, the Stanhope Government has been forced to reduce the unfair burden that they put on ACT
residents," Mr Pratt said, "Why was it so necessary to put so many ACT residents particularly those who have to visit loved ones frequently or could hardly afford it through so much inconvenience and for so long before finally coming to their sense?"
Mr McGowan said the Government must come up with other ways to deal with problems such as
people parking at the hospital to avoid fees in Woden and Belconnen.
