A teenager from Thousand Oaks received a warm welcome as he sailed into Marina del Rey on July 16,2009, becoming the youngest person to circle the globe by sea alone. Zac Sunderland arrived in Marina del Rey with his 36-foot boat Intrepid at about 10 am local time. During his 28,000-nautical-mile journey, he braved storms, equipment failures and a conflict with suspected pirates (海盗). "It"s great to be back." Sunderland, of Thousand Oaks, California, said after he was welcomed home by a group of friends. Fewer than 250 people have sailed around the globe alone, according to the American Sailing Assoiciation, which certified (证实) Sunderland"s feat. . He left Marina del Rey, just south of Los Angeles, on June 14, 2008, and celebrated his 17th birthday at sea while off Africa"s Cape of Good Hope. His return was delayed near the end of his voyage when his boat had a broken bulkhead(舱壁) in rough seas off Mexico, forcing him to stop at Puerto Vallarta long enough to wait for his father to fly there to make repairs. Another tense moment occurred in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia where the Intrepid was approached by a suspected a pirated boat. The intruders fled after a plane flew overhead and Sunderland climbed onto his deck with a gun to keep them off, said Charlie Nobles, executive director of the association. Sunderland, who remained in contact with his father by satellite telephone during the voyage, threw the gun away before entering Mexican waters, where it is illegal to carry private firearms. He becomes the first person under 18 to travel around the globe by sea alone, and the youngest to date. One Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we"d have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn"t have been more different - clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still -25°C. Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we"d been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling - more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there. Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We"d been told that then they were nursing their chicks (刚孵出 的幼雏) and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn"t seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose (摆姿势) for photos. Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically (明显地) since our last visit. It was such a nice day.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were 1 . His chances of surviving were small. 2 when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive-much 3 than he was when he started, but alive. His 4 of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness - how he 5 to catch fish, how he evaporated(蒸发)sea water to 6 fresh water - is very interesting. But the thing that 7 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no 8 in continuing the struggle. He was starved and 9 worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice. When people 10 these kinds of circumstances (境遇), they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 11 desperate circumstances 12 in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 13 difficulties. "I tell myself I can 14 it," wrote Callahan in his book. "Compared to what others have been through, I"m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 15 up courage…
